typicalofficeapplications(email,database,andfile/printserver)onthefollowingsolutions:

• ADellEMCPowerEdgeVRTXwithtwoDellEMCPowerEdgeM630servernodespoweredbytheIntelXeonprocessorE5-2650v3,runningVMwarevSphere5.5inahigh-availability(HA)clusterconfigurationwithfourMicrosoft®WindowsServer®2012R2virtualmachines(VMs)–onerunningSQLServer®2014,tworunningExchangeServer2013,andoneactingasafile/printserver.

• AlegacydisparatehardwaresolutionconsistingofthreeolderHPtowerservers,aNETGEAR®switch,andanHPstorageappliance.ThelegacytowerserversranbaremetalinstancesofWindowsServer2012withonerunningSQLServer2012,onerunningExchangeServer2010,andonerunningasadedicatedfile/printserver.

Weranthreebenchmarkssimultaneouslytostresstheemail,database,andfileandprintapplicationsallatonce.TheperformanceofthelegacyhardwaresolutionwediscussinthisreportisfromaJune2013PrincipledTechnologiesstudy(availableatwww.principledtechnologies.com/Dell/VRTX_performance_TCO_0713.pdf).

Whenconfiguringtheworkloadsforthisstudy,webeganbyrunningworkloadsidenticaltotheonesinthepreviousstudy,andfoundthatthePowerEdgeVRTXhadanenormousamountofunusedhardwarecapacity.

WethenincreasedtheloadofeachbenchmarkontheVRTXsolutiontoreflectthebusinessgrowththatwouldoccurinatypicalcompanyoverthreeyears.NotethatwedidnotincreasetheloadstoalevelthatwouldpushtheVRTXtoitslimits.Rather,weattemptedtorepresentrealisticgradualgrowthacompanywouldobserve.Undertheincreasedworkload,theCPUutilizationoftheVRTXremainedatlevelsthatwouldallowforevengreaterworkloadsasthecompanyexperiencedfurthergrowthinthefuture.

WealsomeasuredthepowerconsumptionofthePowerEdgeVRTXandthelegacysolutionwhileidleandduringthesimultaneousworkloads.Fordetailedconfigurationinformationaboutthesolutionswetested,seeAppendixA.Fortestingdetails,includingtheincreasedworkloadparametersweused,seeAppendixB.Fordetailedtestresults,seeAppendixC.



DellEMCPowerEdgeVRTXwiththeIntelXeonprocessorE5-2650v3optimizedapplicationperformancewhilereducingpowerconsumptionandprovidingheadroomforfuturegrowthDatabaseperformance

AsFigure1shows,duringourtestrunningthreeworkloadsatthesametime,theDellEMCPowerEdgeVRTXwithtwoIntelXeonprocessorE5-2650v3-poweredDellEMCPowerEdgeM630servernodesachieved2.9timesthedatabaseperformanceofthelegacydisparatehardwaresolution.ThismeanstheVRTXsolutionwouldbeabletoproduceatleast2.9timesasmanydatabaseordersperminute.Tosimulategrowthintheoverallbusinessandnumberofemployees,wedecreasedthethinktimeofourdatabasebenchmarkontheM630sfromthe300millisecondsweranonthelegacysolutionto100milliseconds;thisshorterthinktimerepresentsmoreactivityandstressonthedatabase.

FileandprintperformanceAsFigure2shows,duringourtestrunningthreeworkloadsatthesametime,

thePowerEdgeVRTXwithtwoIntelXeonprocessorE5-2650v3-poweredDellEMCPowerEdgeM630servernodesachieved4.8timesthesimulatedfileandprintperformanceofthelegacydisparatehardwaresolution.Again,toshowtheimpactofbusinessgrowth,weincreasedthenumberofworkersinourbenchmarktoolontheM630storepresentmoresimulatedusersaccessingfileandprintcapabilities.

ExchangeperformanceAlongwithgrowingtheworkloadstocompensateforbusinessgrowthsincethe

legacysystemstesting,weupgradedfromExchange2010toExchange2013andfromMicrosoftLoadGenerator2010toLoadGen2013.WealsoincreasedthenumberofExchangeusersfrom500to750.Figure3showsourfindings.

Whilewecan’tdirectlycomparetheresultsfromthesetwotestscenariosduetothedifferencesbetweenthetwoversionsofExchange,wecanlookatthenumberofusersandthelatency,orresponsetime,inmillisecondstolearnabouttheirrelativeperformance.Wefoundthatlatenciesremainedroughlyevenonthenewersolutionevenwiththeincreasednumberofusers,andwellwithintheaveragelatencythresholdof50millisecondsthatMicrosoftsets.ThismeansthattheVTRXsolutioncansupportone-and-a-halftimesasmanyemailuserswhilestayingwithinanacceptableresponsetime.

Powerconsumption

ThecompactIntelXeonprocessorE5-2650v3-poweredDellEMCPowerEdgeM630withDellEMCPowerEdgeVRTXnotonlysupportedmoreworkthanthelegacytowersolution,italsousedsignificantlylesspowerwhileunderheavierloadthankstoDellEMC’sperformance-per-wattsystempowermanagementpolicy.AsFigure4shows,



theM630servernodeswithVRTXused41.5percentlesspowerwhilerunningourthreesimultaneousworkloadsthanthelegacydisparatehardwaresolutiondid.Thisreducedconsumptioncantranslatedirectlytosavings.

Inourtests,weusedaDellEMCPowerEdgeVRTXwithonlytwoserverscomparedtothethreephysicalserversinthelegacyhardwaresolution.Addingservernodesandmoreorfasterdrivestothesharedstoragemayachievegreaterperformancegains,thoughthecurrentconfigurationstillhadplentyofroomforgrowth.Additionally,addingnewapplicationVMstoyourVMwarevSphereenvironmentmaygivetheIntelXeonprocessorE5-2650v3-poweredVRTXsolutionscalabilityandroomtogrowasthedemandsofyourbusinesscontinuetoincrease.Withalegacydisparatehardwaresolution,achievingsimilarresultsmayrequirepurchasingadditionalserversthattakeupmorespaceandconsumemorepower.

ReducedspaceandphysicalcomplexityInadditiontotheextraspacethatlegacydisparatehardwaresolutions

encompass,theyoftenhaveagreatdealofcomplexitywhenitcomestohardwarepiecesandcabling.Ifyourbusiness’locationhaspremiumsquarefootagevalue,accommodatingyourlegacysolutioncanmeansacrificingpreciousspace.TheDellEMCPowerEdgeVRTXisacompactall-in-one-solutionthatfitseasilyunderadeskandusesminimalcablingbecausethesolutionresidesinonechassis.

Thoughthesolutionisunlikelytobeinaserverrackinasmallorremoteoffice,welookedattherack-equivalentspaceeachsolutionwouldoccupytomakeauniversalsizecomparison.WefoundthattheVRTXsolutionwouldfitintojust5Uofrack-equivalentspace–a70.6percentreductioninthespacethatthelegacysolutionwouldtakeup(amassive17U).



ForeachUofrack-equivalentspace,theDellEMCPowerEdgeVRTXwithtwoIntelXeonprocessorE5-2650v3-poweredDellEMCPowerEdgeM630servernodesdeliveredawhopping10timesthedatabaseperformance,inordersperminute,thanthelegacydisparatehardwaresolution(seeFigure5).

Whilechoosingtokeepalegacydisparatehardwaresolutionmightseemconvenientandcost-effective,wefoundthatpurchasingandrunningtheDellEMCPowerEdgeVRTXwithtwoIntelXeonprocessorE5-2600v3-poweredDellEMCPowerEdgeM630servernodescoulddeliverasmuchasa30.2percentlowerfive-yeartotalcostofownership(TCO)thancontinuingtousethelegacysolution(seeFigure7).

WiththePowerEdgeVRTXwithtwoIntelXeonprocessorE5-2600v3-poweredM630servernodes,wefoundthatabusinesscouldachievepayback,orareturnoninvestment(ROI),inaslittleas35months(seeFigures9and10).

INCONCLUSIONKeepingalegacydisparatehardwaresolutioninsteadofchoosingtheDellEMC

PowerEdgeVRTXpoweredbytheIntelXeonprocessorE5-2600v3familymaycostmorethanonewouldexpect.WefoundthattheVRTXwithtwoIntelXeonprocessorE5-2650v3-poweredDellEMCPowerEdgeM630servernodessupportedaheavierworkloadthanalegacydisparatehardwaresolutionacrossemail,database,andfile/printserversimultaneousworkloadswhilereducingpowerconsumptionby41.5percent.

ThePowerEdgeVRTXachievedthesesavingsusing70.6percentlessrack-equivalentspacethanthelegacydisparatehardwaresolutionandwithone-thirdasmanycables,toreducecomplexityandreducetheburdenofspaceinsmalloffices.

Finally,despitealargerinitialinvestment,thePowerEdgeVRTXwithtwoIntelXeonprocessorE5-2600v3-poweredPowerEdgeM630servernodescouldactuallylowerthetotalcostofownershipoveryearsasmuchas30.2percent,deliveringasolidreturnoninvestmentinlessthanthreeyears.

Asourtestresultsshow,investingintheDellEMCPowerEdgeVRTXsolutionpoweredbytheIntelXeonprocessorE5v3familycouldprovideacompactsolutiontooptimizeapplicationperformanceandreducecomplexityatalowerlifetimecostthanalegacysolution.

WegeneratedthedatausingtheInstall.plscriptincludedwithDVDStoreversion2.1(DS2),providingtheparametersforour10GBdatabasesizeandthedatabaseplatformonwhichweran:MicrosoftSQLServer.WerantheInstall.plscriptonautilitysystemrunningLinux.ThedatabaseschemawasalsogeneratedbytheInstall.plscript.

Afterprocessingthedatageneration,wetransferredthedatafilesandschemacreationfilestoaWindows-basedsystemrunningSQLServer2014.Webuiltthe10GBdatabaseinSQLServer2014,andthenperformedafullbackup,storingthebackupfileontheC:driveforquickaccess.Weusedthatbackupfiletorestoretheserverbetweentestruns.



Theonlymodificationwemadetotheschemacreationscriptswerethespecifiedfilesizesforourdatabase.Weexplicitlysetthefilesizeshigherthannecessarytoensurethatnofile-growthactivitywouldaffecttheoutputsofthetest.Besidesthisfilesizemodification,thedatabaseschemawascreatedandloadedaccordingtotheDVDStoredocumentation.Specifically,wefollowedthestepsbelow:

1. WegeneratedthedataandcreatedthedatabaseandfilestructureusingdatabasecreationscriptsintheDS2download.Wemadesizemodificationsspecifictoour10GBdatabaseandtheappropriatechangestodriveletters.
