Growing up

Born on July 18, 1950 in England. Richard Branson struggled in school and dropped out at age 16 – a

decision that ultimately lead to the creation of Virgin Records.

Born on July 18,1950 in England. 1967: Dropped out of school and started a

magazine called Student. 1969: Branson got idea of selling albums at

reduced rates through mails. 1972: Launched the record label Virgin

Records.

Branson dropped out at the age of 16 to start a youth-

culture magazine called Student. He hoped it would

be a forum for politically-minded youth. He soon was

publishing essays and interviews from such figures as Jean- Paul, Alice Walker.

Despite such a roster of great minds and literary figures, the magazine never made money

and seemed bound to fail.

Virgin had been going strongly but it was discovered Branson was dodging his tax payments.

He was arrested and jailed.

1977: Singed Sex Pistols , and became the largest indie label in the world.

1978-1983: Branson started over fifty different companies encompassing everything from

filmmaking to air conditioner cleaning. 1984: Started Virgin Atlantic Airlines, the biggest

challenge. 1992: Sold the Virgin label to EMI for £500

million.

With fuel prices having doubled in the early `90s , terrorist attacks making people afraid to fly. Virgin Atlantic was struggling to stay afloat. Branson was

forced to sell Virgin Records in order to sustain Virgin Atlantic and pay off his creditors.

He jumped off from the top of the building at the launching of his new

headquarter.

A 1998 attempt at an around the world balloon flight by Branson ends in the Pacific Ocean on 25 December
