Common Power ProblemsHere are some of the most common power supply problems and their likely effect on sensitiveequipment:Blackouts

Total loss of utility power, a power failure or black-out is a zero-voltage condition that lasts for more than two cycles. It may be caused by tripping a circuit breaker, power distribution failure or utility power failure. A blackout can cause data loss or corruption and equipment damage.

Possibile Solutions: Generators, Uninterruptable Power Supplies, Inverters & Renewable Energy i.e. Solar Power, Wind Energy

Power SagTransient (short term) under-voltage, a Power sag is the reduction of AC Voltage at a given frequency for the duration of 0.5 cycles to 1 minute’s time. Sages are usually caused by system faults, and often the result of switching on loads with high demand startup currents

Possibile Solutions: Voltage Regulators, Uninterruptable Power Supplies, Power Conditioners

Power Surges (Spike)Transient (short term) over-voltage i.e. spike or peak. A power surge takes place when the volt-age is 110% or more above normal. The most common cause is heavy electrical equipment being turned off. Under these conditions, comput-er systems and other high tech equipment can experience flickering lights, equipment shutoff, errors or memory loss.

Possibile Solutions: Surge Suppressors, Voltage Regulators, Uninterruptable Power Supplies, Power Conditioners

Under Voltage (Brownouts)Low line voltage for an extended period of time, a brownout is a steady lower voltage state. An example of a brownout is what happens during peak electrical demand , when utilities can’t always meet the requirements and must lower the voltage to limit maximum power. When this happens, systems can experience glitches, data loss and equipment failure.

Possibile Solutions: Voltage Regulators, Uninterruptable Power Supplies, Power Conditioners

Over Voltage

Increased voltage for an extended period of time, High-voltage spikes occur when there is a sudden voltage peak of up to 6,000 volts. These spikes are usually the result of nearby lightning strikes, but there can be other causes as well. The effects on vulnera-ble electronic systems can include loss of data and burned circuit boards.

Possibile Solutions: Surge Suppressors,Voltage Regulators, Uninterruptable Power Supplies, Power Conditioners,

Electrical Line NoiseDistortions superimposed on the power waveform. Electrical line noise is defined as Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) and Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and causes unwanted effects in the circuits of computer systems. Sources of the problems include motors, relays, motor control devices, broadcast trans-missions, microwave radiation, and distant electrical storms. RFI, EMI and other frequency problems can cause equipment to lock-up, and data error or loss.

Possibile Solutions: Voltage Regulators, Uninterruptable Power Supplies, Power Conditioners

Frequency VariationDeviation from the nominal frequency (50 or 60 Hz), a frequency variation involves a change in frequency from the normally stable utility frequen-cy of 50 or 60 Hz, depending on your geographic location. This may be caused by erratic operation of emergency generators or unstable frequency power sources. For sensitive equipment, the re-sults can be data loss, program failure, equipment lock-up or complete shut down.Possibile Solutions: Voltage Regulators, Power Conditioners

Switching TransientsInstantaneous under voltage (notch) in the range of milliseconds to seconds, Transients are poten-tially the most damaging type of power quality disturbance that you may encounter. May cause erratic behaviour in some equipment, memory loss, data error, data loss and component stress. Transients fall into 2 categories. • Impulsive• OscillatoryPossibile Solutions: Surge Suppressors, Voltage Regulators, Uninterruptable Power Supplies, Power Conditioners

Harmonic DistortionMultiples of power frequency superimposed on the power waveform.Causes excess heating in wiring and fuses. Most current distortion is gener-ated by electronic loads, also called non-linear loads. These non-linear loads might be single phase loads such as point-of-sale terminals, or three-phase as in variable speed drives.

Possibile Solutions: Uninterruptable Power Supplies, Power Conditioners

Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS)

At Critical Power we solve Critical Power Problems. Our range of back-up

power solutions includes the best line-up of UPS systems available including

standby, line interactive and on-line double-conversion, N+N configuration

floor standing and rack mount uninterruptible power supplies, from UPS

manufacturers who meet our supply chain standards for quality and

environmental ECO (ISO 14001) management.

Uninterruptible Power Supply, UPS is a device that provides battery backup

when the electrical power fails or drops to an unacceptable voltage level.

Small UPS systems provide power for a few minutes; enough to power down

the computer in an orderly manner, while larger systems have enough

battery for several hours. In mission critical datacenters and application,

UPS systems are used for just a few minutes until electrical generators or

alternative power take over. UPS systems can be set up to alert file servers

to shut down in an orderly manner when an outage has occurred, and the

batteries are running out.

TYPES OF UPS UNITS

1) Standby UPSA standby UPS, also called an “offline UPS,” is the most common type of UPS found in a computer or office supply store. It draws current from the AC outlet and switches to battery within a few milli-seconds after detecting a power failure.Your computer is running at standard mains via a small limited AC Filter under normal circumstanc-es After a power failure this type of UPS system switches, via a small relay, over to a simple in-verter to provide power to allow you to save your open files and shutdown your computer. The backup time is normally short and will de-pend on the VA rating of the UPS and the amount of power your equipment draws from it. This type of UPS will give you very limited or no protection against power surges, spikes and sags. Typical backup time = 5 - 10 Minutes maximum. The backup time cannot be extended. This type of UPS System is aimed at the SOHO & small business market and is mainly used when you have repeated, short power failures but a reasonably good mains supply. This type of UPS system is not recommended for critical applica-tions or areas where there is bad or high fluctuat-ing mains supply. Cost : Medium Power Level : from 300VA to 3200VA Protection level : Approximately 20 - 60%

2) Line Interactive UPSThe line interactive UPS “interacts” with the AC power line to smooth out the waveforms and correct the rise and fall of the voltage. This type of UPS system will provide backup to enable you to save your work and shutdown your computer after a power failure and is also de-signed to regulate the output voltage and prevent, to a large degree, any spike, sags and blackouts from reaching your sensitive equipment (ranging from computers and telecommunications systems to computerised instruments). Once again, the backup time will depend on the VA rating of the UPS (see VA rating definition above) and the amount of power your equipment draws from it. Typical backup time = 5 - 10 Minutes. With the relevant model, the backup time can be extended to several hours. Our range is intelligent (RS232) and comes with automatic shutdown software and serial cable. Recommended for semi-critical applications and small to medium sized businesses. Only recommended for semi-critical applications if the UPS output is pure sinewave (as line interactive UPS systems are also available in stepped square-wave or modified sinewave).

Cost : Medium high Power Level : from 1KVA to 10KVA Protection level : 60-80%

3) Online Double Conversion UPSThe online UPS is the most advanced and most costly UPS. The inverter is continuously providing clean power from the battery, and the computer equipment is never receiving power directly from the AC outlet. This type of UPS system will provide total protection and backup on power failure for critical applications. Your computer system is always running on electroni-cally produced power and it is not directly connected to the utility supply. The double conversion, double isolation and the pure sinewave form output ensure the cleanest, most compatible AC output for comput-ers and any other critical load. Typical backup time = 5 - 10 Minutes. Plug-in external battery packs are available to extend the backup time to several hours. This unit is intelligent (RS232) and comes with automatic shutdown software and serial cable. This type of UPS System is aimed at the professional, medical/industrial and upper business market and is recommended when you have a very dirty, noisy & unreliable mains supply. It is also recommended for all critical Computer and medical applications. This type of system has the highest protection level available. Cost : High Power Level : from 700VA to 1000KVA (or several MVA with imported systems which can be paralleled) Protection level : 100%

ONLINE UPS (DOUBLE CONVERSION)

All UPS systems switch to battery when the power fails. The difference is how they handle the power under normal circumstances. Standby units provide limited attenuation whereas line interactive systems will adjust the voltage and smooth out bad harmonics. Online systems are constantly regenerating clean power.

PARALLEL SYSTEMS: A parallel system comprises of multiple UPS systems or UPS modules (e.g. 19”rack mount modules). These are installed so that they operate in parallel to support a common critical load. There are two main reasons for selecting this type of system. The first would be to increase the UPS capacity, which enables the system to power a larger load than possible with a single module. The second reason is to increase the system reliability by introducing modular redundancy.

UPS MONITORING & SHUTDOWN SOFTWARE: This software is available for many UPS systems. This will enable you to monitor your UPS remotely and in the event of a power failure the software can shutdown the computers connected to the system so that you don’t lose any data. Our MT, LT, RTC, MHC, LH and RMH series have free shutdown software included. A special SNMP (simple network management protocol) version is also available on request. Will require additional hardware.

UPS ENVIRONMENT & BATTERY LIFE SPAN: To protect your UPS and its batteries, the system should be placed in the correct environment. UPS systems are not designed to be placed outside where they are exposed to the elements. They should preferably be placed in an air conditioned room but this is not necessary if the envi-ronment temperature does not exceed 24 - 26 degrees celsius. The hotter the environment, the shorter the life span of the batteries. If possible, humidity should also be kept below 60%.Remember a UPS is more complex than the computer that it is driving. UPS batteries are normally semi sealed maintenance free and have a life span of 3 - 5 years. At the end of this time, UPS batteries can be replaced.

SERVICE MAINTENANCE CONTRACTS: UPS systems, especially larger systems, require maintenance. We offer countrywide service agreements, ranging from basic maintenance to full service contracts. Please enquire. These services help to extend the UPS and battery life span.

STANDBY POWER GENERATORSGenerators are used to provide vital source of back-up power in the event of a prolonged power outage. They are also used in isolated places as the main source of current when the electrical network does not exist. In electricity generation, an electric generator is a device that converts mechanical energy to electri-cal energy. A generator forces electric current to flow through an external circuit. The source of mechanical energy may be a reciprocating or turbine steam engine, water falling through a turbine or water-wheel, an internal combustion engine, a wind turbine, [1] a hand crank, compressed air, or any other source of mechanical energy. Generators provide nearly all of the power for electric power

grids. The reverse conversion of electrical energy into mechanical energy is done by an electric motor, and motors and generators have many similarities. Many motors can be mechanically driven to gen-erate electricity and frequently make acceptable generators.Critical Power has extensive knowledge of what it takes to ensure your generator is installed with minimal disruption to your business. Our services include preparing external groundwork, running generator cables to the change over panel and integrating the generator switchgear to the mains supply or UPS.We offers both diesel and petrol generators with Single and Three phase power supply op-

tions, starting from 5kVA for smaller loads up to 3000KVA for entire buildings or large data centre applications. We provide canopied, open, low noise, low emission, fully installed, serviced and maintained solutions for clients and applications that simply cannot tolerate down time.

AC/DC & DC/AC POWER SYSTEMS

Inverters, Rectifiers, Chargers, The wide range of DC Standby Power Sys-tems are used to provide DC power for critical systems or equipment which must continue operating in the event of mains power supply failure. They are reliable and cost effective solutions to the specific power requirements of different type of applica-tions. DC Standby Power Systems are de-signed for maximum battery life, optimised and safe charging. Models of different voltages are available operating from AC mains supply or DC Input power source.Critical Power Supplies Inverters feature an integrated utility bypass, and can be cascaded for redundancy and improved critical power security. Designed for long Mean Time Between Failure, these inverters provide the dependable Critical AC Power that critical networks demand. Critical Power Supplies DC Power Systems meet or exceed most equipment applica-tions for today’s growing new technologies networks. The system includes telecom grade switch mode rectifiers into a feature rich mounting shelf or wall mount cabinet with integrated control and supervision card.

Automatic Voltage StabilizerA voltage regulator/stabilizer is an electric equipment designed to automatically regulate/maintain a constant voltage level. It is an electrical appliance used to feed constant voltage current to electrical gadgets like UPS, Generators, ACs, com-puters and other electrical equipments. It protects them from damage due to voltage fluctuations. It works on the principle of a transformer, where the input current is connected to primary windings and out-put is received from secondary windings. When there is a drop in incoming voltage, it activates electromagnetic relays which add to more number of turns in the secondary winding, thus giving higher voltage which compensates for loss in output voltage. When there is rise in the incoming volt-age, the reverse happens, and, thus, the voltage at the output side remains almost unchanged.

STS Source Transfer Switches

Source Transfer Switches (STS) or Static Transfer Switches is another name they have been called, are used to increase the resilience of power continuity plans by introducing a dual-input source of primary AC power. An STS device will automatically connect its output to one of two AC power sources known as primary and secondary supplies should the preferred source go out of tolerance. These can include: two uninterruptible power supplies or two mains power supplies, or a combination of the two. STS devices can also be ‘switched’ manually and remotely. Small STS systems generally rated at

16Amp tend to be relay-based with fast switching characteristics and are relative-ly cheaper then synchronous STS de-signs. However, Synchronous STS design offer additional security when protecting loads of 32amps or more. STS solutions generally incorporate Power Distribu-tion Units (PDUs) with up to ten output IEC 320 type sockets, with intelligent monitoring including voltage and load percentages. Larger STS systems tends to be hardwired and used within more complex switching arrangements of a power continuity plan. Most static or source transfer switches whether single or three phase can be used as generic devices within a UPS installation. Manufacturer specific static or source transfer switches may be pre-ferred for site-wide monitoring and con-trol using manufacturer specific remotemonitoring software packages.

Power Distribution Units (PDUs)A power distribution unit (PDU) is a device fitted with multiple outputs designed to distribute electric power, especially to racks of computers and networking equipment located within the data center. PDUs vary from simple and inexpensive rack-mounted “power strips” to larger floor-mounted PDUs with multiple functions including power filtering to improve power quality, intelligent load balancing, and remote

monitoring and control by LAN or SNMP.At Critical Power we solve power prob-lems. Our range of Power Distribution Units includes both modular and monitored PDUs, and single and three phase units. Our PDUs can be fully customised and are available for vertical or horizontal rack-mount installation. Metered, Intelligent and Switched Power Distribution Units are ideal for network engineers and datacentre managers con-cerned with managing network power and electricity usage. The true RMS current readings provided by our PDUs can be used within data centre efficiency – PUE (Power Usage Efficiency) and DCIE (Data Centre Infrastructure Effi-ciency) calculations.

Batteries- Lead Sealed Acid

UPS batteries are typically maintenance free sealed lead acid batter-ies with either a five or ten year design life. This means that they will require replacement during years three to four, and seven to eight respectively. A UPS will automatically test its batteries using built-in UPS battery testing, but for larger systems requiring the highest levels of resilience, onsite battery testing and monitoring.Battery MonitoringBattery Monitoring and optimization of large battery and accumu-lator installations.- Designed to avoid unnoticed and sudden breakdowns of deficient batteries and accumulators- Intelligent battery EQUALIZINGTM procedure for more stability, reliability and overall life-time, thus reducing costs

Bypass Switch and Switchgear

An external wiring path to which the load can be transferred in order to upgrade or perform service on the UPS without powering down the load.A maintenance bypass is a means of switching the load to the unprotected mains supply, while the UPS/Inverter equipment is isolated and made safe for servicing or repair. The bypass isolation switch is designed for applications where maintenance, inspection and testing must be performed while maintain-ing continuous power to the load. This is typi-cally required in critical life support systems and standby power situations calling for safe system maintenance with no power disruptions.switchgear is the combination of electrical disconnect switches, fuses or circuit breakers used to control, protect and isolate electrical equipment. Switchgear is used both to de-ener-gize equipment to allow work to be done and to clear faults downstream. This type of equipment is important because it is directly linked to the reliability of the electricity supply.

Power Conditioners & Surge Protectors

A power conditioner (also known as a line conditioner or power line conditioner) is a device intended to improve the quality of the power that is delivered to electrical load equip-ment. While there is no official definition of a power conditioner, the term most often refers to a device that acts in one or more ways to deliver a voltage of the proper level and char-acteristics to enable load equipment to func-tion properly. In some uses, power conditioner refers to a voltage regulator with at least one other function to improve power quality (e.g. power factor correction, noise suppression, transient impulse protection, etc.).The terms “power conditioning” and “power conditioner” can be misleading, as the word “power” here refers to the electricity generally rather than the more technical electric power.Conditioners specifically work to smooth the sinusoidal A.C. wave form and maintain a con-stant voltage over varying loads.Critical Power offers a range of Power Conditioning solutions, which include the following:• Medical Grade Transformers compliance

to UL60601-1/ IEC60601-1.• Power Conditioners single phase and

three phase.• Surge strips.• Transient Voltage Surge Suppression

Devices.• Ultra Isolation Transformers.

Note: Conditioners specifically work to smooth the sinusoidal A.C. wave form and maintain a constant voltage over varying loads.

Lighting fixtures & Accessories

Lighting or illumination is the deliberate use of light to achieve a practical or aesthetic effect. Lighting includes the use of both artificiallight sources like lamps and light fixtures, as well as natural illumination by capturing daylight. Daylighting (using windows, skylights, or light shelves) is sometimes used as the main source of light during daytime in buildings. This can save energy in place of using artificial lighting, which represents a major component of en-ergy consumption in buildings. Proper lighting can enhance task performance, improve the appearance of an area, or have positive psy-chological effects on occupants.Indoor lighting is usually accomplished using light fixtures, and is a key part of interior design. Lighting can also be an intrinsic component of

landscape projects.

the wires. A cable is two or more wires running side by side and bonded, twisted, or braided together to form a single assembly. In electrical engineering ca-bles are used to carry electric currents. An optical cable contains one or more optical fibers in a protective jacket that supports the fibers..

MCCB’s and MCB Circuit breakersAn MCB (circuit breaker) is an automatic switch that stops the flow of electric current in a sudden-ly overloaded or otherwise abnormally stressed electric circuit.A circuit breaker is a manually or automatically operated electrical switch designed to protect an electrical circuit from damage caused by over-load or short circuit. Its basic function is to detect a fault condition and interrupt current flow.

Rack Cabinets A 19-inch rack is a standardized frame or enclo-sure for mounting multiple equipment modules. Solar technologies are broadly character-ized as either passive solar or active solar depending on the way they capture, convert and distribute solar energy. Active solar techniques include the use of photo-voltaic panels and solar thermal collectors to harness the energy. Passive solar tech-niques include orienting a building to the Sun, selecting materials with favorable ther-mal mass or light dispersing properties, and designing spaces that naturally circulate air.

Solar Street Lights Solar street lights are raised light sources which are powered by photovoltaic panels generally mounted on the lighting structure. The photovoltaic panels charge a recharge-able battery, which powers a fluorescent or LED lamp during the night.

A Solar InverterA solar inverter is an electrical device that changes direct current (DC) generated by a photovoltaic array (solar panel) or other alternative sources, into alternating current (AC) for use in industrial, commercial and residential use. Solar inverters convert the low voltage direct current (DC 12V, 24V, 36V & 48V or other) into higher voltage (220VAC) alternating current.

Solar Energy Explained.Solar energy, radiant light and heat from the sun, has been harnessed by humans since ancient times using a range of ever evolv-ing technologies. Solar radiation, along with secondary solar-powered resources such as wind and wave power, hydroelectricity and biomass, account for most of the available renewable energy on earth. Only a minus-cule fraction of the available solar energy is used.Solar powered electrical generation relies on heat engines and photovoltaics. Solar energy’s uses are limited only by human ingenuity. A partial list of solar applica-tions includes space heating and cooling through solar architecture, potable water via distillation and disinfection, daylighting, solar hot water, solar cooking, and high tempera-ture process heat for industrial purposes. To harvest the solar energy, the most common way is to use solar panels.

Solar Panels & AccessoriesA solar panel is a set of solar photovoltaic modules electrically connected and mount-ed on a supporting structure. A photovoltaic module is a packaged, connected assembly of solar cells. The solar module can be used as a component of a larger photovoltaic system to generate and supply electricity in commercial and resi-dential applications.

A solar inverter is an electrical device that changes direct current (DC) generated by a photovoltaic array (solar panel) or other alternative sources, into alternating current (AC) for use in industrial, commercial and residential use. Solar inverters convert the low voltage direct current (DC 12V, 24V, 36V & 48V or other) into higher voltage (220VAC) alternating current.

Solar water heatingSolar water heating systems use free heat from the sun to warm domestic hot water. A conventional boiler or immersion heater can be used to make the water hotter, or to provide hot water when solar energy is unavailable.

The benefits of solar water heating• Hot water throughout the year: the system works all year round, though you’ll need to heat the water further with a boiler or immersion heater during the winter months.• Cut your bills: sunlight is free, so once you’ve paid for the initial installation your hot water costs will be reduced.• Cut your carbon footprint: solar hot water is a green, renewable heating system and can reduce your carbon dioxide emissions

Wind Power At Critical Power Supplies we offer a range of wind power solutions from leading manu-facturers, including turn key solutions. Please contact us for more information.Wind Power Explained.Wind power is the conversion of wind energy into a useful form of energy, such as using wind turbines to make electricity, wind mills

for mechanical power, wind pumps for pump-ing water or drainage, or sails to propel ships.A wind turbine is a device that converts kinetic energy from the wind into electrical power. A wind turbine used for charging batteries may be referred to as a wind charger.

Biogas & BiomassBiogas typically refers to a gas produce by the breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen. It is a renewable energy source like solar and wind energy. Furthermore, biogas can be produced from regionally available raw materials such as recycled waste and is environmentally friendly.Biogas is produced by anaerobic digestion with anaerobic bacteria or fermentation of biodegradable materials such as manure, sewage, municipal waste, green waste, plant material, and crops.

Hydroelectricity Hydroelectricity is the term referring to electricity generated by hydropower; the production of electrical power through the use of the gravitational force of falling or flowing water. It is the most widely used form of renewable energy, accounting for 16 percent of global electricity generation – 3,427 terawatt-hours of electricity production in 2010,[1] and is expected to increase about 3.1% each year for the next 25 years. The cost of hydroelectricity is relatively low, making it a competitive source of renewable electricity. Hydro is also a flexible source of electricity since plants can be ramped up and down very quickly to adapt to changing energy demands. However, damming interrupts the flow of rivers and can harm local ecosys-tems, and building large dams and reservoirs often involves displacing people and wildlife.Once a hydroelectric complex is constructed, the project produces no direct waste, and has a considerably lower output level of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) than fossil fuel powered energy plants.

Power Audit and Energy analysisWe carry out Power/Energy audit using the latest state of art equipment to help our clients reduce energy consumption.

An energy audit is an inspection, survey and analysis of energy flows for energy conservation in a building, it is a service where the energy efficiency is evaluated using professional equipment to reduce the amount of energy input into the system without negatively affecting the out-put(s).

It involves study is an occupied building to reducing energy consumption while maintaining or improving human com-fort, health and safety are of primary concern. Beyond simply identifying the sources of energy use, an energy audit seeks to prioritize the energy uses according to the greatest to least cost effective opportunities for energy savings.

Electrical Installation and Commissioning ServicesAt Critical Power we have set our services range to provide a full turn-key power solutions package, whilst allowing clients

and partners to select only those services that they require. The two most important services to ensure a ‘clean install’ are electrical installation and commissioning, both of which may require certificates to be issued before a system can be made ‘live’.We are registered Electrical contractors by the ERC (Energy Regulatory Commission & NCA (National Construction Authority) Our Critical Power and Energy experts can organise a com-plete certified electrical installation including:• Assessment of the building incomer and existing single and three phase supplies, distribution and cabling.• Provision of full AC power distribution, electrical and site monitoring cabling, HV/LV panels, switchgear, distribution panels and power distribution units.

System Installation, decommissioning, relocation and disposalInstallation & CommissioningElectrical equipments installation & commis-sioning can be more than a simple switch on process. For complex systems it can involve an inspection of connections, peripherals, inside-the-box components, firmware matching, configuration and final setup and test prior to switch-on. Commissioning is therefore a ‘boot-up’ process that relies on every assembly being ready to perform its role within the system. Only then can a system be started and the training and handover begin to the site representative.UPS up to 3kVA with plug and socket connec-

tions are user-commissionable. Hardwired sys-tems and larger systems will require connec-tion to the electrical supply and comissioning by suitable qualified and certified personnel. Some manufacturers may void their warranty terms if one of their systems is not commis-sioned by a certified engineer.

RelocationEquipment Logistics is a management art in itself. It starts with a site survey by a Critical Power and Energy specialist who provides our logistics team with the necessary information for relocation or even a full removal and disposal.Moving systems whose weight can very quick-ly surpass a one-man lift health and safety lim-it, and require specialist delivery planning and equipment requires experienced personnel. With Critical Power you can rest assured that our logistics team can cater for any eventuality, even to providing crane and traffic manage-ment services if required (with full local author-ity clearance off course).

Load Bank TestingAs part of our commissioning service load bank testing can be supplied. The use of load banks provides a thorough testing of the UPS battery to support its load.

DecommissioningWhere a UPS or generator system is decom-missioned, Critical Power can organise its removal/decommisioning. At Critical Power we only use trained and
