The OrganizationThe Group is made up of four divisions:

Elsteel LV AssembliesThis is a specialist electrical assembly division, involved with the design of power distribution and motor control assemblies. The design of the panel is done here, based on customer speci�cation, and to international norms (IEC 61439-1).

Drives and ControlThe drives division supplies SSD Parker speed drives, including AC, DC and Servo drives. They provide the complete service of drive system design, commissioning, back-up service and training.

Position FeedbackATI Systems is a leading supplier of rotary motion and linear displacement sensors. The company is the sole distributor of famous brands like Leine & Linde and Temposonics.

Standard EnclosuresATI Systems is the sole importer and distributor of the Eldon range of enclosures. It includes wall mounted enclosures, �oor standers and consoles, in stainless steel and mild steel. ATI is the largest stockiest of enclosures in Southern Africa.

Solar panelsA solar panel is composed of solar cells made up of semiconducting material which absorbs sunlight to produce electricity. The most common rating of a single panel is 24Vdc and 8 Amps.

Combiner boxesSince the voltage for a single panel is low, several panels are connected in series to provide an output voltage inline with the inverter’s working range (500-750Vdc). A group of panels grouped in series is called an array.

Depending on the power of the inverter and the number of arrays, several boxes are grouped together in parallel to get higher currents.

A combiner box is composed of: Switch-Disconnector, protection against short circuits and, optionally, surge arresters.

InverterA device that converts direct current (DC) produced by solar modules to alternating current (AC) that is used by most appliances.

Metering and AC protection switchboardProtection and measurement of the electrical energy both used and injected into the grid.

TransformerA device that transfers the electrical energy before being injected into the grid.

Power splittingTo ensure optimal availability it is recommended to divide the PV installation to form zones.

Level 1 combiner boxesThey are used to combine the solar panel arrays. Located at the PV panel structures. Output can go directly to the inverter, or depending on the installation, several boxes are re-combined into secondary combiner boxes in order to get higher currents.

Level 2 combiner boxesThese are often situated at the inverter and recombine arrays coming from other primary combiner boxes.

The pattern is the same as in level 1 boxes, except for the components being adapted for the rated currents. The resulting output is connected directly to the inverter.

Overview1000VDC load break switches are required for PV installations. They are capable to withstand making and breaking of circuits, even in short-circuit conditions.

It provides isolation to the inverter input for safe maintenance. Each switch has four breaking contacts bridged with links.

The size of the switch is voltage and short-circuit current dependent.

Several sizes are available:

Off-grid or stand-alone systemsIt is an energy system that is not connected to the grid. Intended for users who want to be independent of the grid or where the grid is not available. In order to provide continuous power, these systems must be connected to storage units that can store excess power produced during daylight hours for use at night.

Some examples of application are: Residential, solar street lighting, solar pumps.
