Goal of One Stop Service Drives Merger –
Open Systems Platform Enables Continued Growth
Océ Global Document Solutions case study
Company Profile:In today’s dynamic business arena
announcements of company mergers and
acquisitions have become quite common.
What may not be so familiar, however,
is what happens after the announcement
is made. The need to merge business
operations and computing platforms
is critical for success. Of course, this
must happen all while the new organi-
zation ensures superior service and
customer continuity.
Global Document SolutionsCorporation (GDS) is oneexample of a company that foundthe integration of multiple organi-zations a fairly seamless process. As a result, the company was ableto charge ahead towards the goal ofbecoming a "one-stop shopping"solution for the documentprocessing marketplace. Whatmade the integration go smoothly? One factor was the use of an OpenSystems processing platformalready available to each partnerfrom a common provider – OcéPrinting Systems USA, Inc.
Today Global Document SolutionsCorporation comprises severaldivisions joined with the specificintention of becoming a one-stopsolution. Two pieces of the newGDS are XerographicReproduction Center (XRC) andAmerican Direct Mail (ADM).
XRC brought copy centerresources to the deal, while ADMcontributed the traditional datacenter environment. Theconsolidated company servesfinancial, manufacturing, telecommunications andpublishing markets.

Before the merger, XRC was heavilyfocused in the On-Demand market, but realized that customers havefurther require-ments for mailing, statements and other document-oriented services.
“We either had to build it ourselvesor link with someone who addedthe services we lacked,” said RogerGimbel, Director of WorldwideOperations and Marketing forGlobal Document Solutions, andpresident of XRC. ADM did nothave an On-Demand business andwas likewise studying the gaps intheir service offerings and reaching
a similar conclusion. “Mergingversus building was a matter ofeconomies, time and the ability toexpand immediately. We accom-plished it in three months ratherthan three years,” declared Gimbel.
More Resources ThroughOne Source“As a unified company, we can domore for customers who prefer towork with just one source. We candesign statements, print and mailthose documents, and store themfor later printing and mailing or wecan produce On-Demand work,”said Gimbel. “When a customer hasa need, we can take the project, print it and deliver it anywhereglobally through our membershipin the International PrintersNetwork (IPN). We also have web-based offerings so customers canview images before they areprinted.”
The unified organization solves theproblem of getting fast, qualityresults when there are hand offs, breaks and sometimes finger point-
ing across the process. “Our unified,one-stop approach removesproblems that waste time and com-plicate projects,” said Gimbel. “Nowall accountability belongs to GDS.”
The successfully merged operationdemonstrates Océ suitability forboth on-demand and productionenvironments. Whether they couldget the printing to integrate wasnever an issue. “Océ’s OpenSystems technology enabled us toseamlessly integrate theorganizations,” said said Ken DelVecchio, president of AmericanDirect Mail (ADM) and partner ofGlobal Document Solutions.
Unified Positioning isCompetitive Advantage Global Document Solutions nowoffers all the services that might beneeded in the course of handlingdocuments. “As a unified company,we offer total solutions across theboard, from design and pre-pressthrough to print and finishedproduct.” Océ helps GDSparticipate in key areas such as statements and mailings, as well aspublishing and Print-On-Demand.Other services offered by GDSinclude posters, photo retouching, graphics, traditional offset presses, hand and multi-pocket inserting, intelligent bar coding andprogramming.
GDS uses Océ equipment for boththe statement side of the house andin the Print-On-Demand arena.ADM came into the deal withadvanced Océ PageStream tech-nology for statement production, which they used along with someother cut sheet systems. ThePageStreams are connected to RSIslit and merge systems for thetransactional documents. Even

from pre-merger days, XRC reliedon the Océ DemandStream 8080and some cut sheet machines for itson-demand and book publishingbusiness.
Servers Drive TechnologyIntegration “We needed to offer our customersmore options and flexibility. TheOcé digital equipment gave us thecompetitive options and in turnprovided greater business oppor-tunities for us. The merger is justone example of how the equipmentenabled us to grow and expand.”said Ken Del Vecchio.
“Beyond that of the printers, theOcé print servers, with their abilityto accommodate all datastreams, allow us to go in several directionswith applications,” said Gimbel.“We can take files and print themin any form. Our Océ Squadronprint server enables us to drive anyof our systems, be it the Océprinters or the others in our printenvironment.”
GDS represents the mixed printenvironments so typical of today’sevolving marketplace. “Workingwith Océ enables us to betteraccommodate the data of differentprocessing environments,” Gimbelsaid. “They help us keep the processfluid. We can do a production runof statements and immediatelyfollow with a book production run,”said Gimbel. “The Océ ability toaccommodate PostScript, PCL, AFP,MetaCode and traditional IPDS
data streams has helped us in today’sevolving market.”
“The Open Systems platform givesus a competitive advantage. Withtwo Océ machines available, one canback up the other regardless if wehave a statement job or a book toproduce. Back-up equipment isvery important in terms of ourability to load balance jobs, especially for monthly statements,”Gimbel said. “We try to run at 60%capacity, allowing for peaks, and thehigh-performance Océ systems let usmaintain a flexible level of work.
We have to offer whatever any cus-tomer requires, so we need systemsthat accommodate a broad range ofpaper, too. Océ systems give theflexibility we need, and that is agreat advantage to us,” said Gimbel.“We can put jobs on the 300 dpiPageStream and the 600 dpiDemandStream, so we have the
added choice of output resolutionin our operating environment. WithOcé variable data printers, we alsohave more options in the print-on-demand arena for 1:1 marketingservices.”
In–Out–Correctly–On TimeKen Del Vecchio summarizes GDScustomer goals as "In - Out -Correctly - On Time." For DelVecchio, that’s what the businessboils down to, and Océ helps meetthose expectations consistently.“Océ provides us with speed andeconomy,” said Del Vecchio. “Wecan produce three to four times thevolume possible on some cut sheetdevices. Océ enables us to be moreproductive and turn around jobsmore quickly,” he continued.
So far, results of the corporate andtechnology consolidation have beenexcellent. The GDS sales organiza-tion can now cross sell more mailing
JIT Book Publishing atGDS
Even before the merger, XRC was
always very focused on book
publishing, and GDS continues to
develop competitive services to capture
more of this lucrative business. “In the
book publishing arena, we are
primarily producing technical manuals
and text books,” explained Roger
Gimbel of GDS. “When we used to
get original books, there were many
steps in the reproduction process. We
moved to a digital platform because we
could receive files remotely from
customers and get work out the door
more quickly than we were able to
with the offset presses that we used.
Now that we’re so heavily involved in
book publishing, we use DocuTechs in
conjunction with DemandStreams.
We turned to Océ because of the
speed, flexibility, reliability and cost
advantages it offers. The Océ digital
DemandStream systems helped us
eliminate many steps and become
more productive,” Gimbel says.
Flexible From All Angles“To stay competitive in book manufac-
turing, we need to produce whatever
size book the customer requests,” he
explained. “We turned to the print
provider who could give us the greatest
flexibility in providing variable book
sizes from 6"x9" on up, and that has
been Océ. We also needed a system
that could accommodate different
formats. As part of the International
Printers Network, we distribute files
and print them anywhere around the
world, and flexible format capability is
essential at that level.”
From manuals and product guides,
XRC is now focused on further de-
veloping Just In Time (JIT) output of
one-off books. “This is a growing op-
portunity, and with Océ we can do
just one book at time and still be cost
effec-tive and of good quality,” said
Gimbel.
Technology remains a critical focus in
GDS book publishing plans. Gimbel
and GDS Operations Manager John
Slaney are working together to develop
JIT book publishing as one of the
company’s premier business strategies.
The fast Océ DemandStream remains
at the core as GDS takes this
profitable service to the next level.

and On-Demand business. “Digitaltechnology lets us sell more com-pletely to customers, and simplifythe number of contacts and relation-ships to manage,” said Donna Melli, sales director for XRC.
“Océ enabled us to attract newbusiness,” said Gimbel. “Because weturn around jobs faster and do itmore cost effectively, we are able tobe more competitive. Our long-term plans are to incorporate thecontinually emerging technologyfrom Océ as we provide statementproduction via the Internet,” saidGimbel.
“Océ is one of the components thatcontributed to our ability toexpand, grow and merge theorganization that is today’s Global
Document Solutions,” said DelVecchio. The synergy continues asGDS and Océ and other pioneerscontinue to explore new worlds ofdocuments.
Finding Synergy inIntegrated DocumentServicesBeing a pioneer is not new to RogerGimbel. In fact, when he receiveda Pioneer Award this year, it echoedan honor his father received some35 year before. The Pioneer Awardis given by On-Demand leaders andindustry analysts for contributionsto the digital printing marketplace.
