The Arena Football League• The AFL was founded in 1987 by Jim Foster. He

conceived the idea of indoor football while watching an indoor soccer match at Madison Square Garden in 1981.

Scott Butera

• Scott Butera was just named the commissioner of the League on

September 23, 2014.

• He played football at Trinity College in Hartford.

• Spent his career in top management positions in brands such as Foxwoods Resorts and was the CEO of Tropicana Entertainment.

Season• The AFL season consists of a 20- week

schedule where each team plays 18 games and has two by weeks.

• The season starts during the second week of March and runs weekly until late August.

Teams

• The AFL originally started out with just four teams, but has now grown to 14.

• The 14 teams are divided into two conferences: the American Conference and the National Conference.

Playoffs

The division winners and two wild card teams from each conference play in the AFL playoffs. It is an eight-team single

elimination tournament.• The two winners play each other in the Arena Bowl• Their championship

trophy is called the Foster Trophy.

• The current championsand the champions for thelast three years are the Arizona Rattlers.

• Compared to the NFL, the AFL is seen as inferior and is not as popular.

• The AFL stresses family entertainment. Families’ account for about 60% of AFL ticket sales.

• Low operating costs has helped with AFL survival despite the 2009 season being cancelled.

• Bon Jovi- co-owner of the Philadelphia Soul describes the AFL as “a great place for young players wanting to get some professional football experience under their belt or older players winding down their careers.”
