HSBC, committed to sustainable developmentHSBC France Corporate sustainability strategy

HSBC recognises that environmental, social and economic issues are critical to its long-term success.HSBC France develops the Group’s strategy for Corporate Sustainability in three key areas:

Sustainable Finance

• Sustainability risk framework A signatory to the Equator Principles, HSBC has proactively expanded these principles, by developing policies for sectors with high environmental or social impact: forestry, agricultural commodities, freshwater infrastructure, mining and metals, chemicals, energy, World Heritage sites and Ramsar Wetlands and defence(1).

The British think tank Global Canopy Programme (GCP) ranked HSBC a leading company in the fight against deforestation. A Forest 500 leader and a unique player in the banking sector, HSBC is one of only seven multinationals with “serious and effective policies to protect the rainforest”. Published in February 2015, this classification reviews the practices and policies of 250 companies, 150 investors and 50 jurisdictions based on their efforts in the fight against deforestation. Together, these 500 players work to combat all threats faced by the rainforest. Deforestation accounts for 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

• Climate Business Since 2010, HSBC has supported the international growth of “a low-carbon economy” that develops products and services to accelerate the shift towards renewable energy, energy efficiency, low carbon transport...

HSBC is a sponsor of “Panorama 2015 des Clean Tech”, published by GreenUnivers, which presents an evaluation of the main trends, a review of public policy, analysis of public and private investment and a look at the position of French companies in the international market.

• ESG integration In order to meet investors’s expectations, HSBC is increasingly encouraging more companies to consider long-term issues by incorporating the assessment of environmental and social impact and corporate governance in its offerings: Green Bond issue, sustainable funds, expertise in ESG for SRI analysts, etc.

In 2014, the HSBC Climate Change Centre of Excellence commissioned a report, “Bonds and Climate Change: the state of the market in 2014”, as part of the Climate Bonds Initiative, to assist in raising the awareness among issuers and investors regarding the opportunities offered by climate change.

• Social and solidarity economy HSBC France has allocated €2 million in lines of credit to Adie (Association pour le Droit à l’Initiative Economique —Association for the Right to Economic Initiative). HSBC France also participates in the FinanCités Citizen Capital and Business Angels des Cités venture capital funds.

(1) These sectoral guides are available on www.hsbc.fr. under Développement Durable (Sustainability).

Page 23: Companies and non-profit organisations

23

Sustainable operations

HSBC aims to be the most energy-efficient bank by 2020, by reducing its CO2 emissions by one tonne per employee per year compared to 2012 levels.

Sustainable communities

• The Fondation HSBC pour l’Education works towards the facilitation of access to education for young people from deprived areas: Since the establishment of the Foundation, almost 60,000 young people and 145 projects have benefited from its support.

• The HSBC Water Programme is a partnership launched in June 2012, for an amount of $100 million over five years, with three global Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs): Earthwatch, WaterAid and the WWF.

More than 1440 group employees in France have completed 1750 volunteer missions, representing nearly 12,000 hours, including 72% in working hours.

For further information, see the dedicated pages at www.hsbc.fr/rapportsdd

2015 marks a milestone in the commitment of countries against climate change, with the holding of the COP21 Climate Change Conference in Paris in December. The Conference aims for 193 countries to reach a binding agreement to limit global warming to 2°C in the post-2020 period compared to pre-industrial levels.

This event, hosted and chaired by France, will be an opportunity for many companies to demonstrate their expertise in eco-technologies for the development of a low-carbon economy to the 40,000 expected attendees.

HSBC France is supporting its partners and customers throughout this crucial year, making its own contribution to the success of these negotiations.
