Community Unit District #2
Fire Prevention week was held on October 9th – 15th. Kindergarten through third grade classes visited the Serena
Fire Station on Friday, October 14th along with our friends from Harding Grade School. The students learned about
fire safety, tried on fireman gear, had a tour of the firehouse and fire trucks. The kids especially enjoyed being able to
roll up the fire hoses. Thanks to the Serena Fire Department for a great morning.
PTO News
The Serena Grade School P.T.O. held their monthly meeting on Monday, November 7th with teacher representative
Corrine Norem and Kelsey Meyer in attendance.
The P.T.O. generously provided the teachers delicious food during the two nights of Parent/Teacher Conferences.
P.TO. members were in attendance during conferences selling the new Spirit Wear.
The P.T.O. helped celebrate Halloween with the K-5 students on Monday, October 31st. The students paraded
through the streets of Serena and then returned to the school for games and treats.
The PTO sponsored the Scholastic Achievement Breakfast that were held at Serena Grade School on November 1st and
November 2nd. Students in grades 2nd – 8th grade who had achieved A’s and B’s on their report cards were recognized.
Donuts, juice, milk and coffee were served to the students and their families to celebrate their achievements.
Sandwich Opera House Trips
On Friday, October 14th the 4th grade attended the production of “James and the Giant Peach” at the Sandwich Opera
House. The 4th grade students had been reading the book as a class and were excited to see this production.
Baseball Day On Friday, November 4th, Serena Grade School celebrated the Chicago Cubs winning the 2016 World Series. The stu-dents all wore their favorite teams’ shirts and hats and were able to watch the Cubs Victory Parade on the large screen in the gym.
Soccer
The Unit #2 soccer team award’s night was held on Thursday, October 13th. Coach Jeremy Foreman presented letters,
pins and certificates to team members. Team members were: Bradley Armour, Dawson Britt, Madisen Chaplin, Bray-
den Dunaway, Joel Ewing, Brody Faivre, Camden Figgins, Cole Freebairn, Braxton Hart, Connor Holdiman, Nick Jager,
Cooper Langston, Hunter Linder, Autumn Massier, Mason McNelis, Hunter Muffler, Ashton Parks, Ben Shugrue,
Todd Smith, Hudson Stafford, Ivan Stafford, and A.J. Wold.
The Unit #2 soccer team finished the season with an 11-2 record and placed 2nd in the Newark Tournament.

The Serena volleyball awards night was held on Thursday, October 13th. Coach Leona Whiteaker presented letters,
pins and certificates to the team members. The B-team players are as follows: Dani Britt, Jaylyn Clairmont, Alyssa
Engel, Sydney Felesena, Hannah Hardyman, Hannah McNelis and Aubree Thompson. A-team players are as follows:

Serena Boys Basketball
Mr. Ron McCaslin is the coach for the Serena Grade School boys’ basketball team this year. The B-team players include:
Bradley Armour, Richard Armour, Jason Denbow, Chance Matusak, Mason McNelis and Kole Stegman. The A-team
players include: Dawson Britt, Dylan Cartwright, Nathan Engel, Austin Ertman, Alex Heiman, Weseley Ihrig, Connor
Holdiman, Trent Johnson, Lane Stegman, and Trevor Thanepohn. Good Luck Boys!
Congratulations to the Serena Grade School Boys A-Team for capturing the 3rd place trophy at the Newark Early Bird
Tournament. What a great start to the basketball season!
Veterans Day
Serena Grade School students along with Serena High School invited Veteran’s to a reception and performance on Vet-eran’s Day, November 11th. The student performance included songs and readings to honor all Veteran’s and members of our Armed Forces. The High School band played the “Star Spangled Banner and each branch of the military’s theme song. The veteran’s in attendance were also introduced to the student body and toured the grade school to see all the Veteran Day projects made by the students.
