Investigating solubility

Aim To investigate the solubility of different materials in different solvents.

Prediction I think that …

Materials and equipment • tap water*

• methylated spirits*

• table salt

• canola or olive oil*

• sand (silicon dioxide)

• 3 × drinking glasses

• stirring rod or metal teaspoon

• thermometer

• measuring spoon — tablespoon (1 Aus. tbspn = 20 mL)

• measuring spoon — teaspoon (1 Aus. tspn = 5 mL)

• electronic scales

* the three liquids should all be at room temperature.

Safety Identify any potential safety risks and suggest how these risks can be reduced.

Potential risk How the risk can be reduced

Method

1. Measure 2 tablespoons (40 mL) of water into one drinking glass.

2. Measure 1 level measuring teaspoon of table salt and add it to the water in the glass.

3. Stir the table salt solution. If it has dissolved add another level teaspoon of salt to the same

glass and stir. Repeat until no more salt dissolves.

4. Record the total number of teaspoons of salt dissolved.

5. Record any observations about the dissolving material.

6. Repeat steps 1 to 6 with sugar and then sand.

7. Repeat steps 1 to 7 using methylated spirits and then the oil instead of water.

Note: Stop adding material as soon as it no longer dissolves; record the amount of material that

did dissolve as your final result.

Fabulous Fitness for Everyone Choose your own adventure

Choose one (or more if you like) to complete each day. Work to your own fitness level. Smile and have FUN.

Week 4

Throw Tennis

Create a small court either indoors or outdoors with a “net” in the middle. Players must underarm throw the ball to land in the court on the opponent’s side of the

net. The other player must catch the ball after one bounce and return the ball from where they caught it.

The aim is to win the point by making your opponent

miss the catch. You will also win the point if your opponent throws the ball out or into the net.

Broom Hockey

Set up a small field either indoors or outdoors with two

goals. Play 1 v 1 or 2 v 2.

Kids challenge mum and dad to a game and see who wins bragging rights. (Parents you may like to increase

the stakes and offer a night off washing up or other jobs for the winners)

Old Time Games Try some old time favourite games.

1. Hopscotch 2. What’s the time, Mr Wolf? 3. Elastics (Chinese jump rope) 4. Jump rope 5. Hula hooping 6. Piggy in the middle (Keep Away) 7. Four square (Hand Ball)

Week 4 Year 6

1. Trace over the hiragana to label the islands and cities.

2. Using the hiragana sheet have a go at writing the romaji for each word. These are the English sounds that

match the hiragana characters

a. Be careful with little つ。You don’t write anything under this character. When you see it, you have to

double the next letter eg たって tatte. Remember lazy う too. He punches the sound before it and

we put a line above (often an o) that makes that sound last longer. Nothing goes under the う Shoyu

= しょうゆ
