Restoration & Recovery

Each session begins with this presentation as a power introduction to the difficult topics to be covered. This session is a good way to ’set the tone of the day.” This component brings the participants together in the realization that many of their issues are shared. The facilitators are not scripted, they adapt dynamically to the group in order to cover the following components: • Identify the root problem & the mani-

fested symptoms • Strengths & weaknesses • Quit making excuses • Map a personal path • Take one day at a time • Make realistic goals • Fail forward Spiritual & Personal Growth

Facilitators (Rev. Kenyatta Bush, Stacy Steen, Roosevelt Gates, and James “Bull” Martin) stress the importance of develop-ing inner self and forming positive, sup-portive relationships with those who can help. The instructors also explain in practical language how to give up the practice of instant gratification and to understand the concept of delayed (earned) rewards. Decision Making

Susan Howington and Cindy Sweda ex-plained the concepts of tracking one’s spending in layman’s terms (i.e. fast food

vs. groceries). They explore the difference between ‘needs’ and ‘wants.’ They cover expense planning, budgeting, smart spending, and the importance of saving for emergencies. Real Estate Realities

Bryan Chandler, a local mortgage banker with Envoy, returns for his fourth year to educate the participants on the ramifica-tions of the real estate arena: • Qualifying vs. Affording • Hidden costs in ownership • Long term effects of eviction and

foreclosure • How eviction happens • Importance of residential stability • How housing affects credit • Predatory lending Interview & Job Skills

Denese Rodgers stresses the importance of resume creation, persistence, presenta-tion, and self-preparation. She explains appropriate interview and job behavior, stressing the importance of a positive personal network. Denese adapts her delivery to the specifics of the audience in attendance (youth, aged, men, women, etc) and covers what should, and what should not be worn to an interview and how to avoid illegal or uncomfortable questions. She stresses the concept of doing what it takes to be valued in a job, and to person-ally value what you bring to a job.

Overcoming Fear

Harlon Matthews from Henry County Parks & Recreation has become a favorite for this component. He explains how to con-front and conquer your fear. He begins with how to name your fear and then take baby steps to overcome it. He emphasizes the need to rely on positive people to help you overcome your obsta-cles. This is particularly powerful with Harlon, as he is a wheelchair athlete who was stricken as an adult. His personal testimony is moving and powerful. Financial Identity

ICE In Case of Emergency (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

In case of emergency (ICE) is a program that enables first responders, such as paramedics, firefighters

and police officers, to identify victims and contact their next of kin to obtain important medical informa-

tion.

The program was conceived in the mid-2000s and promoted by British paramedic Bob Brotchie in May

2005.

It encourages people to enter emergency contacts in their mobile phone, address book under the name

"ICE". Alternately, a person can list multiple emergency contacts as "ICE1", "ICE2", etc. The popular-

ity of the program has spread across Europe and Australia, and has started to grow into North America.
