Building community and campus connections

Make friends, meet new people, and create lasting memories

HOW TO START SERVICE ON CAMPUS
• Publicity• Websites, Twitter, Facebook, Flyers, Volunteer ListServe, and other
means
• Word of Mouth
• Volunteer/Organization Fairs
• Talk to faculty/staff• Especially Student Activities, • Freshman Seminars or service for a class
• Look for sponsoring organizations in the surrounding community• United Way, Rotary, Kiwanis, Red Cross, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts,
Boys and Girls Clubs, etc…
• Other options
HOW TO SET UP SERVICE PROJECTS
1. Find what people want to help with
2. Research available outlets
3. Make contact
4. Set a date
5. Recruit volunteers for the event
6. Go volunteer
7. Assess service project after completion
8. Repeat
HOW TO ASSESS SUCCESS
• A large number of volunteers does not mean a huge success
• Overall attitude of volunteers
• Ask for feedback from the organization you volunteered with
• Do the volunteers come back for more?
• Did they understand that what they completed is important?
• Ask volunteers to participate in post service reflection activities
• Use the What, So What, Now What model for service learning
