COMMUNITY REPORT 2018
Healthy People in Healthy Communities
C U L P E P E R W E L L N E S S F O U N D AT I O N
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTCulpeper Wellness Foundation, established in October 2014, works to improve health and promote wellness in Culpeper, Madison and Orange counties. In keeping with our mission, the Foundation operates the Free Clinic of Culpeper, Powell Wellness Center and Culpeper Sport & Fitness. We also collaborate with public and private entities to fund local responses to issues that affect the health of our communities.
Together, with our many partners, we are making a difference in the lives and health of people living and working in our three county service area. This work is shared among staff, volunteers, donors, community leaders, nonprofit organizations and more. It is work that requires passion, dedication, selflessness, communication and flexibility. We are so grateful for the many, many partners who work closely with us in that way. TOGETHER we are helping our friends and neighbors live happier, healthier lives.
The Foundation’s work is guided by a three-year strategic framework, approved by the board of directors in 2017, that identifies the following organizational priorities:
1. Reduce the incidence and health impact of obesity and chronic disease.
2. Inspire healthy, active lifestyles through affordable fitness programs that respond to community needs.
3. Provide health care for low-income, uninsured adults and health education to improve quality of life and reduce health care costs.
We are proud of our accomplishments, grateful for our partners and excited about the future.
Regards, Shari Landry President

MEET BRENDAAfter years working with toxic chemicals in landscaping and furniture refinishing, Brenda was left struggling to breathe. The medications she needed made her gain weight rapidly and before long she was unable to work and seldom left her bed. When she fell and broke her leg in 3 places, the doctor told her she would never walk again. Without health insurance, the bills that piled up during Brenda’s hospitalization kept her from getting regular medical care.
Brenda’s daughter Chrissy talked her mom into going to the Free Clinic of Culpeper - “My Free Clinic” as Brenda calls it. Brenda arrived at the Clinic in a wheelchair, unable to walk or care for herself. She needed oxygen to breathe and was borderline diabetic.
At the Free Clinic, Brenda got medical care that had been put off for years. She had a physical, lab work, visits with specialists and was given much-needed medications - all at no cost. The care Brenda received saved her life.
The Clinic staff referred Brenda to Powell Wellness Center to begin to build up her strength and lose weight. Because she was unable to work and couldn’t afford the membership fees, she received fitness scholarships and full access to the facility.
Driven by her strong will and positive attitude, Brenda has lost more than 100 pounds and can walk laps around the fitness floor at Powell Wellness Center. Her goal is to lose 100 more pounds and be able to take her grandchildren for a walk around the neighborhood.
Free Clinic of Culpeper volunteer pharmacist Eugene Triplett was recognized as the Virginia Association of Free and Charitable Clinic’s 2018 Pharmaceutical Champion of Health Care. As Pharmacist in Charge and longtime board member with the Free Clinic of Culpeper, Triplett has selflessly provided countless hours of support filling patient prescriptions, streamlining pharmacy operations, and upgrading clinic pharmacy software and technology.

MEET MAXINEPowell Wellness Center member Maxine is a former Senior Games athlete who enjoyed participating in the games with her husband. Between them they won 75 medals in gold, silver and bronze. Maxine won the gold medal for basketball free throws when she was 66 years old. That achievement occurred one year after she had completed five years of treatment for breast cancer.
Through her membership at PWC, Maxine remains active, although she no longer competes in the Games. She works out on the strength building machines and can be spotted on the track walking 3-4 miles three times a week. In 2018 during PWC’s annual Walk 10K, Maxine walked just over 30 miles in one week – 72,664 steps!

MEET GABEGabe is a student athlete in high school who aspires to play college football. He has been working with personal trainer Marcus Haywood to develop strength and quickness to help him reach his goals.
Gabe says of his experience, “Every workout Marcus has brought nothing but energy, enthusiasm and a constant drive to make you the best you can be. He always brings specific workouts to achieve your goals, from building muscle or losing weight to building speed and footwork. What I see this bringing to youth would benefit kids all around. It gets kids to exert their energy in workout activities that will benefit them at the same time. In the end Marcus makes sure that kids are having a fun time.”
“ Kid Central’s partnership with Culpeper Sport and Fitness has enhanced the lives of hundreds of children enrolled in after-school care. The instructors are positive and energetic—creating a fun environment that introduces healthy habits. Many Kid Central children have benefited from this partnership—they are more fit and the kids that play sports have also seen improvement in their chosen sports.”
