Our 3 fundraisers this year – Cheese & Honey, Chocolates, and Bloo- mers Flowers allowed us to contribute a new Maker Lab to the library reno project. We look forward to seeing the children build robots and unique pro- jects with the 3D printer we'd like to add to the space. We were also able to purchase over 30 toboggans for the winter recess, a bouncy castle rental for the hotdog day entertainment, a pizza party for the class who came in third for chocolate sales, and a grad tree for the Grade 8 graduates. We continued our tradition of hosting a pancake breakfast during Voyageur week and sent the top 2 chocolate sales classes to the Manitoba Museum and Planetarium. We just wanted to show you how your support is making a difference. Over the summer, the school will be upgrading our baseball diamond – Awesome!! We would like to dedicate our fundraising efforts towards adding some bleachers to it. We'd also like to build out the new maker space we're adding to the library and maybe a new enclosed sandbox for the little ones. Suggestions from students, staff, and parents are always welcome. Come join us and share your thoughts with us next September. PAC meeting dates will be announced when school reopens. Wed also like to expand the new Maker space were adding to the library!! We'd like to wish the graduating class all the success in their new school. We hope you all have a safe and wonderful summer and hope to see you all back next year!! PAC 2018-2019. Our School Vision and Mission École Ste-Anne Immersion Principal Reflection - M Laplante As many of you know I am committed to another year at ESAI to mentor our new Vice-Principal with the goal of her becoming your Principal in 2020- 2021. I am very excited about this. I love the ESAI school community. The stu- dents are very respectful. They may be a little too competitive at times but they have made great strides in managing their temper. I am seeing a lot more sports- manship behavior outside at recess. Our teachers and staff are dedicated people who love working with kids. I am very impressed with the quality of education that is happening in the class- rooms, the use of technology, the engagement of students in their learning. Our teachers focussed this year on developing projects and programs that foster in- quiry, critical thinking and a better numeracy and literacy skills. This will contin- ue next year. Looking at our mission, vison and goals I think that as a community we need to review them. This is a normal process and since we will have a new Prin- cipal by the year 2020 it might be time to reengage our students, parents and staff in this process. I would like to say thank you to Mme Klopick (our Vice-Principal) and Mme Kelly (our school Counsellor) who will be leaving us for other assignments. Your support and kindness have impacted many of us and we are sad to see you leave. Best of luck in your new assignments! Mr.Gaudreau is now looking for- ward to his retirement and we thank him for his many years of services in our school division. In closing, I want to say thank you to our PAC whose commitment to the betterment of our school is remarkable. I also want to send a huge and warm thank you to our staff for working so hard in providing our children with a caring environment and high academic engagement. I wish everyone a safe and restful summer vacation. Enjoy our great out- door and go fishing as often as possible! Congratulations Maxi- mus and Heath for their completion of Career Trek. The Grade 5& 6 students went to Camp Red Rock. We had a great time and even caught some fish! Next year we will be go- ing on a winter camp!

Priority #1: Students will consistently communicate in French and develop an enhanced appreciation for French language and culture. Fluency in French is crucial but continues to be a struggle for many of our students who simply don’t make the effort to use French in class Our students must use French as much as possible in a variety of situations. We tried a variety of approaches this year and had success at times. We are planning next year already with a more direct and school wide approach that will promote non-negotiable expectations in term of communicating in French.

In the divisional assessment, Global capacity of speaking in French using the Canadian Association of French Immersion Professional Oral French Referential scale, our Grade 5 and 8 students finished lower then last year. On that scale, 5 represents a person whose first language is French Our divisional expectation is that our stu-dents should be at a 3/5. Although the assessment is only based on a interview taking place at a specific time, the results show that our students really need to use French all the time. This is an area that needs improvement.

The school provides many opportunities for students to use French such as:

Assemblies in French;

Concours d’art oratoire with participation of all students in Grades 3-8;

Festival du Voyageur activities ;

Grade 5/6 students participated in activities at Whittier Park during Festival du Voyageur week;

Maternelle to Grade 8 students participated in school-wide incentive programs to speak French in class and out of class;

Ralliement 5 & 6;

Débat 7 & 8;

Festival Jeunesse Provincial; and

Quebec Exchange

As parents you also have a very important role in reminding your child that speaking French at school is an expec-tation from you. Children who are reminded by their parents on a regular basis of these expectations tend to do much better at school.

Priority #2: Literacy at École Ste. Anne Immersion

We acknowledge that Literacy is across all learning domains so we strived to incorporate literacy in all our planning and discussions. We focused our efforts on providing opportunities for our teachers to work col-laboratively, developing a well-balanced literacy program in their classrooms. The teachers focused their col-laboration time on creating units that integrated the different subject areas, in both languages, to enhance and provide a rich learning experience for the students.

Teachers were able to build on their previous knowledge of learning intentions and success criteria by including their students in the creation of intentions which allowed students to clearly see the path of their learning and feel part of the process. This is an area that may take time to develop. The teachers are now work-ing towards using them more effectively by referring to them on a more regular basis.

Our school learning also focused on using critical thinking strategies in our classrooms. First, we need-ed to spend some time building our understanding of what critical thinking is and what it is not. This took time and lots of professional development provided by our division to help us build the foundation of knowledge

Roots of Empathy

Mme Shawna’s Grade 3/4 class was very lucky to have such a special visitor this year. Mme Loboz (our music teacher) and her daughter Gracelyn came to the school once a month to be a part of the Roots of Empathy Program. Baby Gracelyn taught the stu-dents about empathy, tem-perament, the power of “yet,” and the importance of strong family relation-ships. The students watched Gracelyn gain confidence in exploring her environment, getting sup-port and reassurance from her mom. They saw her learn to crawl and walk, asking lots of great ques-tions about her develop-ment along the way.

Roots of Empathy

Priority #3: Students will use mathematical terminology and describe their math-ematical thinking in number sense.

Complimenting our literacy focus, our school team worked on similar con-cepts—incorporating learning intentions and success criteria for a clear understanding of the learning, critical thinking strategies and collaborating together in finding ways to incorporate numeracy in authentic ways across all subject areas.

For our divisional inquiry project, we focused our attention on our Grade 3/4 classrooms as our target group. Due to a dip in growth as numeracy concepts become more complex, the team looked at the impact of teaching techniques on student learn-ing with an emphasis on teaching the students how to explain their understanding of numeracy concepts through writing in French. Having the grade level teams work to-gether allowed for consistent expectations and common vocabulary knowledge for stu-dents. Feedback from our teachers was positive and results showed an improvement in numeracy scores. This is definitely a step in the right direction!

We will continue to keep Numeracy as a priority for our school and focus on strategies that can help our students become more confident in their numeracy skills.

Highlights Citizenship Citizenship is an important aspect of any educational strategy. At ESAI, we try to pro-vide our students with many opportunities to develop not only an awareness but also to be actively involved in making our community a better place. The students from our Leadership Counsel organized a food drive at Christmas and another drive in June to purchase art supplies for our school . The counsel also organized spirit weeks and re-viewed our code of conduct which will be reviewed furthermore next year. We are also grateful to our students who dedicate their time to say our morning announcements eve-ry day and help in the office every noon hour. Also a big thank you to our lunch moni-tors (Grade 4, 5 and 6) who help in the early year classrooms every lunch hour. MYRCA (Manitoba Young Readers Choice Award) Many of our students participated in this program. With parental permission the stu-dents are asked to rate various books from Canadian authors. The topics can be very challenging so MYRCA is intended for students with excellent reading skills and who are voracious readers. Festival Théatre Jeunesse For the first time, our school entered the annual theatre festival organised by the Cercle Moliere. Our students wrote the play, put it together and did all the lighting and sound. We competed against Franco-Manitobain school and French Immersion schools from around the province. We are very proud of our students who did very well for our first participation.

around the concept. We are now at the beginning stages in learning how to incorporate critical thinking into our practices through the questions we ask our students.

Our staff was busy this year learning together during staff meetings, school based PD’s, and common prep times. With new staff members and movement among staff, we needed to have a common understanding in order for us to move forward together.
