Facts on Literacy• Before third grade, kids learn how to read. After third grade, kids read to learn.• The average child in a low-income family hears about 33% to 50% as many

words as children in higher-income families. • By age 6, the child of the low-income family knows about 3,000 words

compared to 20,000 for those in higher-income families.• In California only 24% of fourth graders are reading proficiently. Research

shows that 74% students who are behind will never catch up.

• Time spent reading is the key. No substitute for raw time.

All kids want to read. Some need extra time and help.
