Economic Development Definition• Community and Economic Development:

Actions taken by an organization to improve the economic situation of local residents (income and assets) and local businesses (profitability and growth); and enhance the community’s quality of life as a whole (appearance, safety, gathering places, and sense of positive momentum. • Three common strategies: Attraction,

Retention, and Creation

• Concept for local economic development and roles: • Local economic development requires the ability to

facilitate interaction, to mobilize stakeholders, and to reconcile different goals and values among key community actors. • Asset building (e.g., skills and capacities of

individuals, associations and institutions within a locality) lays the foundation upon which economic development is built.• Workforce Development is comprised of a relatively

wide range of activities, policies and programs employed by geographies to create, sustain and retain a viable workforce that can support current and future business and industry.

Defined Scope within 4-HYD• 4-H programs, projects, and activities help youth in

identifying their intrinsic skills, extrinsic interests, and helps them explore post-secondary opportunities. • Interest exploration, college/technical training, and

career determination should be connected to all 4-H experiences. • 4-H also fosters valuable workplace skills, that help

lead to greater economic success, through communications, leadership, and civic engagement. • The 4-H is a young person’s “first class” at the

University of Kentucky and is their lens for determining their future. • Our goal is that they leave the program with a better

understanding of what inspires them, the pathways to future success based in their inspiration, and have a repertoire of useful career skills.

Next steps• One logic model for this community priority. All

activities and reporting associated with Economic Development and Workforce Preparation will be all together in one place, regardless of program area• Program leaders will be pulling together

specialists and agents to create teams to support new initiatives • Working with the Plan of Work timeline as best

we can, but some projects will require pilot projects in advance of formal curriculum release
