The Day Before Christmas 5
One year ago, at the start of our second season at the Goldcorp Stage at the BMO Theatre Centre, we premiered Stacey Kaser and Alison Kelly’s The Day Before Christmas, one of our Silver Commissions. This production proved to be a hit with our audiences. Thrilled with the response, we decided to invite the family of Alex, Alan, Brodie, and Max to return once more, again under the skillful direction of Chelsea Haberlin. The Arts Club has a long history of premieres that have enjoyed successful afterlives, starting with Talking Dirty by Sherman Snukal in 1981, stretching across the years and various venues to the award-winning Onegin, by Amiel Gladstone and Veda Hille, which is playing right now at our Granville Island Stage.
If you saw The Day Before Christmas last year, you might notice a few small changes—that’s how new plays evolve. Our company, too, has evolved since our founding by Yvonne Firkins at the Seymour Street Arts Club. We started in 1964 as a small theatre company, created by a group of local artists in a 150-seat theatre. The theatre was located upstairs at the corner of Seymour and Davie and named for the watering hole that inhabited the downstairs space, the Arts Club. We grew from there;
WELCOMEfi rst, with the opening of the Granville Island Stage in 1979 (and later, the Revue Stage), followed by the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage in 1998. And then, in 2015, we opened the very theatre in which you sit tonight, fulfi lling our long-held desire to have a purpose-built theatre at which we could incubate new works and bring them to the stage.
So, as you can see, change is in our DNA. And it will continue to be with the arrival of Incoming Artistic Director Ashlie Corcoran, who begins her transition into the role during the run of this show. We asked her about her feelings on the move home, to B.C., to artistically guide us in our next chapter: “I am ecstatic to be joining the Arts Club Theatre Company, an organization I deeply care about, in a city that I love. I am excited to immerse myself in Vancouver’s cultural community, build on Bill Millerd’s phenomenal legacy, and collaborate with Peter and the Arts Club’s fantastic staff and board. My vision is for the Arts Club to be internationally renowned, driving the development of local theatrical talent and voices, while deeply engaging with its community, audience, and stakeholders. This will be a homecoming for me—born and bred in White Rock, B.C., I am thrilled to once again live in my home province, close to my family. I can’t wait to get started!”
So, here’s to change! And here’s to the season! We wish you all—donors, funders, subscribers, and patrons—the merriest of these days before Christmas. Enjoy the show.

8 The Day Before Christmas
to have a family that doesn’t take material possessions and “the way things should be” all that seriously. We put ugly cardboard decorations that I made when I was three on our tree, and not a year has gone by that I have n’t received dental fl oss in my stocking. These memories are imperfect, but they belong to us. And “us” is what really matters this time of year. Not perfection, because that’s not actually a thing that exists.
Whatever you do to celebrate the holiday, whoever you spend it with, and wherever you are, I hope that you fi nd the ones you love this year and that you remember that more than gifts, more than the tree, even more than the glorious food, what matters most are the people around us and the time we spend together.
A big thank you to the Arts Club for the opportunity.
Chelsea Haberlin
People seem to fall into two camps when it comes to the holiday season. They either love it or loathe it: the
family gatherings, gifts, decorations, traditions, and the food, food, food! If you are on the receiving end of all of this, then awesome. But if you are the one who takes on the responsibility of making it all come together, it can be a real struggle. There’s just so much pressure to “get it right,” to please those around you, and make special memories.
I fall on the side of loving Christmas. I think one of the main reasons I love it is because Christmas in my family has remained so much the same, year after year, for the 33 years I’ve been alive. There is something about the predictability that I fi nd soothing. This is because I am lucky enough

She contributed to four seasons of the CBC fl agship drama North of 60. Comedians Alison Kelly and Deborah Williams (Mom’s the Word) enticed her into doing theatre after
their collaboration on a comedy web series called “Ranting Parent.” (youtube.com/user/RantingP). The Day Before Christmas is the second script she has co-written with Alison. The fi rst, Conversations with My Mother, premiered at Richmond’s Gateway Theatre in October 2014. She recently completed an MFA in Playwriting and Production Design at the University of British Columbia.
