Site compounds and micro-tunnelling: Centenary Square

A micro-tunnelling machine (small scale tunnel-boring machine) will be launched from Centenary Square to upgrade drainage under Church Street between Centenary Square and Lennox Bridge. Tunnelling minimises the impact of construction compared to street-level work. Excavation of the tunnel shaft and drilling from Centenary Square to Parramatta River will start early June, with completion November 2020.

Pedestrian access will be maintained through Centenary Square with minor changes to existing pedestrian routes. Vehicle access points to Centenary Square will change temporarily.

Traffic and pedestrian access

Traffic control will be in place to ensure traffic, pedestrians and the public can move around the work zones safely. Traffic management will include temporary road, footpath or lane closures (except for Church Street between Market and Macquarie Streets, which is a permanent closure) and temporary removal of kerbside parking within the work zone. Parking on Market Street will be adjusted to accommodate the site establishment.

Please follow the direction of traffic controllers and signs and proceed carefully.

What equipment will be used? Equipment will include but is not limited to, concrete saws, jackhammers, compactors, rock breakers, excavators, pick and carry (franna) cranes, Hiab loader cranes, drills, power tools, hand-held tools, trucks, light vehicles, lighting towers for night works and vacuum excavation trucks. When will the work take place?

Standard construction hours are 7am to 7pm Monday to Friday, and 7am to 6pm on Saturday and Sunday for the CBD.

Some works will be carried out at night from 7pm to 7am and on weekends due to lower volumes of road users and pedestrians, and to maintain public safety and maintain footpath access during business hours. When we need to work at night, a maximum of four nights of noisy work will be carried out in any seven-day period.

A detailed work schedule can be found at www.parramattalightrail.nsw.gov.au/weekly-works.

This work is being coordinated with other contractors engaged by Transport for NSW to minimise impacts to residents, businesses and traffic.

How will the work affect you? There will be intermittent noise, dust and vibration associated with this work with pedestrian and traffic diversions in place. There will be intermittent noise and vibration associated with these ongoing works. A maximum of four nights of noise generating works will be completed in any seven-day period. We understand our work may be disruptive and we apologise for any inconvenience.

We will make every effort to minimise the impacts by: • Completing work activities during standard construction hours, where possible • Providing respite periods for any high noise activities • Programming the noisiest activities first and measures such as noise blankets and non-tonal reversing beepers • Monitoring and reviewing noise levels • Using water carts to wet down areas as required • Consulting with directly affected residents and businesses • Turning off equipment and vehicles when not in use
