Adult Confirmation or First Communion

The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) might be for you if you are either of the following:

1) A Catholic without the sacraments of confirmation and/or first communion,

2) Baptized members of other Christian communities, or

3) Unbaptized adult. Why? To help you explore Catholicism and then decide whether to become full members of the Catholic Church. How? Weekly meetings with community members, talk with other Catholics about their experience, meet “new” Catholics about why and how they joined the Church, to learn about the Bible, the church, Catholic Christian tradi-tions, resources for personal reading and study, opportuni-ties for private consultation. For more information, contact RCIA coordinator Rosemary Casey at [email protected].

Original Order of Sacraments All parishes within the Diocese of Honolulu are restoring the Original Order of the Sacraments of Initiation be-tween 2018-2020. Go to www.catholichawaii.org for more information. To learn how the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and First Holy Communion were celebrated in the early church, how it changed over time, and why we are called to restore these sacraments to their original order.

REFLECTIONS FROM THE PASTOR

We are coming to the end of the liturgical year at the end of the month. Many of the scripture readings can be classed as “apocalyptic literature”, regarding the end times. This lit-erature was very popular at the end of the Old Testament period and in the early church. It was written at the time of the persecution of the Jews in the time of the Maccabees and during the Roman persecution of the early Christians. It attempted to answer the question of why the bad folks got away at doing awful things. It’s Message was to stay faithful, be true to God, and all will be right. It is helpful at challenging times in our own lives. I wrote a piece on the book of Revelation that you can find on the table in the back of the church. I hope it is helpful. Don’t forget Thanksgiving is coming up. Everyone is invited to our Mass and dinner.

Many Blessings,

Fr. Jack

Catholic Campaign for Human Development CCHD Collection

Please respond to Pope Francis’ call for the World Day of the Poor the week-end of November 18. Please be generous in the collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human De-velopment (CCHD). In the US, one in six people lives in poverty. With this collec-tion you support programs that address the causes of poverty and help vulnerable people across our country struggling to overcome persistent poverty. Here in Hawaii CCHD has supported a wide range of pro-jects, working with the most vulnerable, including HOPE Services Hawaii, Inc., which has been instrumental in re-sponding to the needs of the homeless and victims from the lava flow on the Big Island. Please remember that 25% of the collection’s proceeds stay in our diocese to hear and respond to the cry of the poor and some of the most vulnerable in our own islands. Please prayerfully consider contributing to the CCHD collection. Donations can be put into the box on the cre-denza. Thank you.

A Substantial Gift

"They gave a substantial gift." Usually, when we hear such a statement, we assume that someone has given a large sum of money or something very valuable in material terms. To-day's scriptures invite us to a deeper understanding of the meaning of a "substantial gift". A "substantial gift" is a gift that comes from the very substance of who we are. All three read-ings speak of such a gift and challenge us to this kind of gener-osity.

A substantial gift is a gift that is given with faith and trust. We believe that, even though we don't seem to have enough, if we are generous God will provide all that we need. The Book of Kings describes a widow who gave such a gift and was blessed by God because of her generosity.

A substantial gift is a gift that it hurts to give and is therefore sacrificial. The Letter to the Hebrews describes how Christ gave such a gift when he gave himself for our salvation. He was willing to suffer and die for us and, therefore, his gift was powerful enough to take away the sins of many.

A substantial gift is a gift that is not given from our "leftovers", but from the "first fruits" of what we have. The Gospel of Mark describes the poor widow who gave all that she had, and not from any excess that she had. She was not giving in order to get rid of something that she really didn't need, but was offering her best.

Generosity is a virtue that is at the heart of Christianity. It may involve giving material resources or it may require giving our time or talent in particular areas. In any case, we are invit-ed today to consider how we make those gifts. Do we do so with faith and trust? Do we give even when it hurts? Are we only giving God our leftovers? God reminds us that a "substantial gift" doesn't have to involve a lot of money. But it should involve a lot of love!

We are grateful to all those who give to our Church even when it is challenging. On this Veteran’s Day weekend, we are also grateful to those who serve and who have served our country, even to the point of offering the ultimate sacrifice of their lives.

"Movie & Masks": a pre-Halloween Event

The following article originally appeared in the UH Manoa campus newspaper, Ka Leo. It is written by Ralph Arista, Features Editor, and published on October 26, 2018.

On Friday, October 26 at 6:30 p.m., the Newman Club, in collaboration with the University of Hawai‘i Mānoa Rainbow Alliance and the Associated Students of Uni-versity of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (ASUH), will be hosting a pre-Halloween event at the Newman Center, “Movie & Masks.” The cult classic, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” will cap off the event and will be shown with live participation from the audience.

“We have purchased some props for the event with the support of ASUH funding, such as noisemakers, party pop-pers, gloves, etc.” Francis Empeno, a member of the Newman Club, said.

“I’m a massive musical theatre geek, and I thought it’d be a fun movie for our members to see,” Empeno said, when asked about the choice of film, “...but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that this event had the potential to create a much needed dialogue to bridge what seems to be a divide between the Church and the LGBTQ+ stu-dent community.”

It was after this that Empeno reached out to his friends from the Rainbow Alliance for their opinion as well. The idea to bridge the two organizations to host this event came from Empeno as someone who identifies as a member of the LGBTQ+ community in the Catholic church.

“As someone who has firsthand experienced the marginalization that comes with having both of these identities, it was time to extend a hand and offer support to the students who need it the most."

"Feeling invalidated by a group is something I'm all too familiar with," Joshua Kim, president of the Rainbow Alliance and Chairperson for Committee on Student Affairs, said. "When Frankie and I started talking, the need to remind our communities that there are people that support, love, and accept us became clear."

Empeno admitted that there may be tension in the air during the event due too “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” which was a controversial movie during its time due to its provocative themes, “...but at the end of it, everyone’s laughing and a lot closer than they were when they first went in,” Empeno said.

"I hope that our attendees learn that these facets of our identity are not mutually exclusive, and can coexist. That be-ing LGBTQ+ doesn't invalidate your existence as a Christian, and vice versa," Kim said. "I also hope that they be-come aware that resources such as Rainbow Alliance and Newman exist, and that we are here to support those re-gardless of gender identity, expression, sexuality, creed, etc."

The “masks” portion of the event refers to the supply of facial spa sheet masks as well as facial cleansing wipes that will be available for students to use to relax while watching the show. Refreshments will also be provided at the event, chili cheese dogs or just chili and rice (vegan chili will also be available).

Attendees are encouraged to dress up as their favorite characters from “Rocky Horror.”
