AMURI COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTRE – FLU VACCINES

Influenza is a significant public health issue in New Zealand, not only in terms of illness and mortality, but in its financial impact and its potential to overwhelm workforces during epidemics in the winter months.

The influenza virus doesn’t care how fit, active or healthy you are. It’s a contagious virus and anyone can catch it. Effective protection is provided by influenza immunisation.

Immunise as soon as possible after the vaccine becomes available, because it takes up to two weeks to induce immunity. The influenza vaccine provides optimum protection in elderly people for about six months and in younger, healthier adults for up to a year.

Influenza immunisation cannot cause influenza because it contains no live viruses. It only contains fragments of inactivated virus which stimulate the immune system to make antibodies that protect against circulating influenza viruses.

Flu vaccines are now available at the Health Centre. Vaccines are free to eligible people, i.e. those at high-risk of complications, either because of their age (65 years and over) or under 65 with any of the medical conditions outlined below:

• Cardiovascular disease • Chronic respiratory disease • Diabetes • Chronic renal disease • Cancer • Other conditions (as advised by Medical

Centre) • As well as pregnant women •

Flu vaccines are available to non eligible patients for $22 Please ring the surgery, ph 315 6328 to make an appointment.

HEALTHWORKS PHARMACY Just a reminder that you can pay your Healthworks Pharmacy account at the Health Centre. Payments can be made via eftpos, credit card, cheque or cash. FROM THE VICAR – NO MAN IS AN ISLAND so speaks the author, Thomas Merton in his book of the same title. I have reflected on it anew for several reasons. At times like this it is entirely wrong to try and come up with all the answers. Sometimes we have to stop listen, be quiet. Be honest with ourselves and God. I offer what I hope will be for you helpful reflections from his book. The rain ceases, and a bird's song suddenly announces the difference between Heaven and hell. God our creator and saviour has given us a language in which He can be talked about, since faith comes by hearing and our tongues are the keys that open Heaven to others. But when the Lord comes as a Bridegroom there remains nothing to be said except that He is coming, and that we must go out to meet him. After that we go forth to find Him in solitude. There we communicate with Him alone, often without words, without discursive thoughts, in the silence of our whole being. When what we say is meant for no one else but Him, it can hardly be said in any language. What is not meant to be related is not even experienced on a level that can be clearly analysed. We know that it must not be told, because it cannot. We must think twice before we speak, if it does not build up and bring honour to God. But before we come to that which is unspeakable and unthinkable, the spirit hovers on the frontiers of known language, wondering whether or not to stay on its own side of the border, so to speak, in order to have something to bring back to other men and women. This is the test of those who wish to cross the frontier. If they are not ready to leave their own ideas and their own words behind them, they cannot travel further. Heard the phrase, can’t hear myself think/ space to think. Are we scared of silence? Merton says; WE receive Christ’s silence into our hearts when first we speak from our heart the word of faith. WE work out our salvation in silence and in hope. Silence is the strength of our inferior life, surrounded by a world scared to be still wanting to be ever busy. Silence enters into the very core of our moral being, so that if we have no silence we have no morality. And in this silence hides a person: Christ, Himself hidden, as he is spoken, in the silence of the Father. I would love to help you travel further over a chat with award winning cake and I hope company Jesus ACTUAL words/experiences are as ever timelessly relevant. So fancy a yarn or a flat white? Taking cake or muffin orders, maybe even a pie to order? So if you need to get something off your chest the Vicarage door is an open door or I'll come to you? Warmest Blessings and prayers Craig Minister/Vicar.
