The Gift that keeps on Giving. . .

Contra Costa College (CCC) has been blessed with many community

supporters of retired faculty/staff and friends who became honored philanthropists for our beloved college community. This summer, Phyllis (Sullivan) Howe, a retired Nutrition Instructor for the Registered Nursing (RN) Program entrusted over $350,000 to CCC upon her death.

Phyllis (Sullivan) Howe was born in 1914 in Columbia Falls Montana. She graduated in 1935 from Montana University with a degree in Home Economics. She later earned a Master of Arts degree in Home Economics from Mills College in Oakland.

Mrs. Howe worked as a dietitian for 9 years

in various bay area hospitals and began her teaching career in 1952 at Contra Costa College. She taught for over 30 years.

Phyllis Howe was ahead of her time as she was interested in the unnecessary consumption of pills, proteins and the consequences that junk foods have on society. She regularly gave lectures on food misinformation or fallacies which were groundbreaking topics at the time.

Phyllis Howe also authored the book, “Nutrition for Practical Nurses,” and seven editions

of the textbook, “Basic Nutrition in Health and Disease.”

Phyllis Howe passed away on July 20, 2012 (last year) at the age of 98. n

The Frank Hernandez Service Award Goes to. . .The recipient of the 2013-14 award is Al Zuniga. Zuniga has worked as a counselor here at CCC for over 40 years. He is considered the historian for the department and has prepared generations of students to become successful leaders and honorable citizens of society. The award was established by the ASU to recognize persons on campus who have made a notable difference in the lives of students. n

The 2013Golden AppleAward Goes to . . .Professor Manu Ampim, Department Chairperson of Anthropology, Geography, History, and Psychology, is awarded the “Golden Apple” Award this year by Alpha Gamma Sigma (AGS) honor society. Construction Updates…Fall 2013MEASURE A – moving forward

Measure A Bond Project is alive and well at Contra Costa College as we break ground, enjoy new buildings, and remain hopeful. The spirit to

move forward is in the air, and we thank the voters for voting YES on Measure A! The campus construction projects will modify pathways, office spaces and parking lots. CCC thank our students, faculty, staff and campus visitors in advance for your understanding as we move towards preparation for these projects. Please excuse the noise and the dust!!! The new Music Building is completed. After two years of migration to the Humanities Building, the music faculty has successfully moved into their beautiful new home. The new Music Building is a must see. Stay tuned for a planned open house and community reception this semester. A groundbreaking ceremony for the New Campus Center has taken place which kicks off the start of this construction project. This project will transform CCC into a collegiate hub for study, student services, dining and administration offices. The new College Center will include three new buildings; a three story classroom facility, a two story infrastructure that will house, Administration, Business Services, Career Technical Education (CTE), Student Life Center, Bookstore, Cafeteria, Fireside and Recreation rooms. Temporal locations for these programs and services have been secured during construction as follows: *Parking Lot #9 (15 spaces facing the creek) will house four portable modular buildings for the Bookstore. The Bookstore move will take place between October 3 thru October 8. *A Subway food truck, tables and benches will create a food court for students in Parking

Lot #9 next to the Bookstore. *Student Life Center has moved to Administration Arts (AA) Building, room 109. *Career Technical Education (CTE) has moved to Administration Arts (AA) Building, room 111. Other construction projects that will take place this semester include the demolition of the Humanities (H) and Student Activities (SA) Buildings. Programs and services affected by the construction plans for the New Campus Center will also include the West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD) Transition Program and the Hispanic Serving Institute (HSI) – STEM Grant.

Coming soon to the website’s homepage are renderings of the New Campus Center and an email drop box for questions and comments. Your opinion and input are important to us, let us hear from you! Other major construction projects will be visible around campus:• *Home Stadium – this project includes a fire

sprinkler system under the bleachers, renovating the restrooms, and concession stand to meet American Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance, and installing a roof for one storage area in the handball court.

• *American Disabilities Act (ADA) parking at the John & Jean Knox Center for the Performing Arts. Two ADA parking spaces are being installed.

• *Gym Annex Modular Elevator – the project completion date is scheduled for this semester.

• *Seismic Upgrade – the Biology and Physical Sciences (older section) Buildings are scheduled for seismic upgrades. A tentative timeline for completion is Fall 2014. n
