This month my report may seem a little disjointed. Due to travel commitments, I am writing it well before the publication date and therefore before the Anzac Day long weekend. However, with the help of our very talented Executive Assistant Jo McGoldrick I am sure we will be able to keep everyone up to date on current and future events.

After what I trust was a safe and happy Easter period for you, we now are in full implementation mode for our next major Breakfast Point event, the Anzac Day Dawn Remembrance Service and luncheon, which is held at the Country Club.

In Australia and New Zealand, Anzac Day has a particular significance; it is our opportunity to recognise the extraordinary sacrifice and achievements made by the men and woman of Australia in all wars in which Anzacs participated.

Breakfast Point has chosen to focus on the contribution our service men and women made in the First World War and particularly those service personnel that enlisted from the then AGL site upon which Breakfast Point now resides.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to participate in this year’s service however we are in strong hands with our resident historian Greg Maunsell once again researching and finding often forgotten service personnel who enlisted from the AGL company and served in various campaigns during the first World War. This year Greg will be assisted by Paul Driver and Peter Marshall and of course by our Rotarians who will once again be attending to the members and guests’ culinary needs at the dawn service with all proceeds going to Legacy. I know that this will once again be a great success and I am very sorry to be missing it.

The Country Club Extensions - in the last edition I mentioned that we were about a month behind our program for the extensions. I am now pleased to report that tender documents were reviewed by

the Extensions Committee last week and will be sent to approved builders the week after Easter with submissions due three weeks after this date. We will not be in a position to determine costs of the project until the tenders are in. We are planning to be in a position to update CA Representatives at the CA Representatives’ meeting scheduled for Monday, 29 May and the broader community at the Town Hall meeting scheduled for Monday, 5 June.

As mentioned in my last report, all other projects are on schedule and will be reported at the meetings mentioned above. CA Representatives will be provided with all documentation for discussion two weeks prior to the meeting.

At the April CA Executive meeting we decided to establish a project team to look into the feasibility of installing solar power generation in Breakfast Point. We have established a small project team to produce a feasibility report considering the latest technologies such as in-roof or flat to roof systems, battery storage capabilities, potential

The benefits to Breakfast Point residents will be significant.

The M4 will be linked with the M5 to form a seamless motorwaywithout traffic lights to the new M5 tunnels. credits for selling power back to the grid etc. If the initial investigation shows merit we may then set-up a pilot to fully test feasibility.

The CA Executive has a duty to the Community to ensure that the Architectural and Landscape standards are adhered to and in this case, we need

to ensure that any solar systems introduced do not contravene these standards.

We are seeking expertise that may exist in the Community to join this project team. If there is anyone in the Community that has proven expertise in solar power generation and would like to join the project, please provide your details and experience to Jo McGoldrick at [email protected].

It has been brought to my attention that there are concerns circulating regarding the tiled roofs on The Point houses that clearly contravene the Standards. We brought this to the attention of the developer as soon as we saw the roofing being fitted and were told that the developer has the right to go outside of their own Standards when they consider it necessary. Unfortunately, there appears to be very little that we can do about this.

Chairman’s Report (continued from page 1)

ANZAC Day - Tuesday, 25 April Another memorable event was held on Tuesday, 25 April! Around 500 people turned up to the Dawn Service and were treated to another dignified and solemn event, highlighting our close-knit community. Braxton Jones, the bugler ringing out the Last Post through our community at dawn was a thought provoking and haunting experience.

Our focus this year was on the Centenary of the 1917 battles, in particular the Second Battle of Bullecourt, as it was the cause of the greatest number, eight, of the AGL casualties. The personal stories of those eight were very poignant.

We were honoured by a first-time attendance of the descendants of one man, and returning visits of descendants of three other men whose names are on the memorial. We were grateful for the support underlined by the presence of our Federal member Craig Laundy at the Dawn Service, and the laying of the wreath from the Breakfast Point Child Care Centre gave evidence of how the significance of the day is being passed to new generations.

It is also significant that our ceremony goes into our neighbouring communities with the attendance of many from outside Breakfast Point and the laying of a wreath by a Cabarita family in remembrance of a relative killed in 1917.

As mentioned on the day, thanks to those involved in organising this successful event. To the internal and external agencies who donated their time and resources: Men’s Shed for set up and pack down, Rotary for breakfast, the Country Club for coffee and set-up, Breakfast Point Realty for two of the official wreaths, Five Dock RSL sub Branch for three wreaths and Mortlake Service Centre for the remaining wreath, Mick Gordon for the music and the Knitters for their poppies.

Thanks to the generosity of attendees $2,239.55 was raised for Legacy.

As always, the Club provided an excellent lunch for 70 of our residents and guests, and we finished up with our traditional ‘mock’ two-up which was a fun way to finish a great day. Despite the frivolity, our thoughts did not stray from our forefathers and the horrors they faced on a daily basis.

Lest we forget.
