LEARNING EACH OTHER'S
SONGS AT FRIDAY FOLKIES
On August 20 Friday Folkies gathered in front of the Inn for a special program of songs chosen and introduced by Lathrop residents, and accompanied by three generations of ukulele-strumming Holloways: Bill on tenor uke, Jane and daughter Pam on baritone ukes, and granddaughter Chelsea on soprano uke (backed by the ever-musical Mi-chael Minor on guitar). Residents were asked to submit a song that someone taught them back in childhood, a song that they have always remembered and even sung to their own children or students. Jane produced booklets with the song lyrics so everyone could join in. The
songs ranged from "Edelweiss" to "I'm a Lonely Little Petunia in an Onion Patch" to "Be Kind to Your Web-footed Friends". Using the original 1898 sheet music, Flora led us in singing "The Slumber Boat", a lullaby from her mother that Flora had sung to her own young son during their three years in In-dia (where he was surround-ed mostly by people speak-ing Bengali, not Eng-lish). Chelsea led us in her favorite, "One Tin Soldier", that she learned from her mother, Pam, who learned it at a girls' camp in the 1980s. Marny remembered her children listening to a Fess Parker recording of "Hunter's Return" with its memorable chorus "High flies the goose, my little papoose". So, we sang old songs, learned new songs, and came to know each other better. In Bill's words, "We may not be that
good, but we sure have fun!"

CONCERT: The Wranglers
Sunday, August 29, 2pm, Outside the Inn
The Wranglers are longtime favorites in and beyond the Pioneer Val-ley, drawing from “trad” jazz, swing, cabaret, country, blues, and folk traditions, and presenting vocals with instruments from fiddle, guitar, banjo, and mandolin to harmonica, trombone, bass, and drums. They’ve appeared multiple times at Northampton's Iron Horse Music Hall and the Black Sheep Deli in Amherst,. They’ve also produced four sold-out CDs and performed throughout New England and Canada.
Readers of the Valley Advocate voted them "Favorite Swing Band" for six years in a row—until the Advocate asked them to retire from the competition! Northampton residents can sign up in the mail-

MT. TOM MOVIES Saturday, 8/28: Houseboat—Tom Winston (Cary Grant) is struggling to raise his three children on his own after his wife's death. After meeting the charming and beautiful Cinzia Zaccardi (Sophia Loren) at a concert, he hires her as a live-in nanny. Unbeknown to Tom, Cinzia is actually a European socialite on the run from her domineering father (Harry Guardino) and has absolutely no experience with cooking, cleaning or raising children. She does, however, have an interest in Tom.
Wednesday, 9/1: Miracle Worker—Blind and deaf after suffering a terrible fever as a baby, young Helen Keller (Patty Duke) has spent years unable to communicate, leaving her frustrated and occasionally violent. As a last chance before she is institutionalized, her parents (Inga Swenson, An-drew Prine) contact a school for the blind, which sends half-blind Annie Sullivan (Anne Bancroft) to teach Helen. Helen is initially resistant, but Annie gradually forms a bond with her and shows Helen ways of reaching others.
