SAFETY SEGMENT

Emergency Preparedness Week | May 6th – 12th

Emergency Preparedness Week is an annual event that takes place each year during the fi rst full week of May. This national event is coordinated by Public Safety Canada, in close collaboration with the provinces and territories, as well as other partners.

Oro-Medonte Fire & Emergency Services encourages everyone to follow these three steps to ensure they are prepared for any emergency:

1. Make a Plan. In an emergency, your family may not be together or you may be asked to evacuate your home. Thinking about what you would do in diff erent situations and preparing a plan with every member of your family is the fi rst step to being prepared.

2. Build A Kit. Your emergency survival kit should have everything you and your family would need to be safe and take care of yourselves for at least 72 hours immediately following an emergency.

3. Be Informed. During an emergency, you should stay tuned to local news channels. Be sure to have a portable, battery-operated or crank radio in your survival kit in case of power outages. There are two main ways that you can be informed about emergencies: sign up for Ontario’s emergency alerts and learn more about the hazards you can face and how you can be prepared for them.

Visit www.emergencymanagementontario.ca orwww.getprepared.ca for resources and information,or contact the Fire & Emergency Services Department.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

Parking RestrictionsWinter parking restrictions are in effect through April 30th. Residents are reminded not to park or leave standing a vehicle that interferes with winter road maintenance. Any vehicle found to be interfering with winter road maintenance may be towed and/or issued a parking infraction and be subject to a fine.

There are permitted parking areas on Municipal roads for individuals engaging in winter recreational activities on Lake Simcoe. These specific areas are signed with a “P” in a green circle. Maps indicating the locations of these zones are available at www.oro-medonte.ca.

Parking is permitted for winter recreational activities at the following locations:• The east side of 5/6 Side Road: from 50 metres

north of Ridge Road West to the Rail Trail.• The north side of Black Forest Lane: 140 metres

from the intersection of Ridge Road West and Black Forest Lane to the cul-de-sac.

• The north side of Lakeshore Road East: 125 metres east of Line 12 South to 125 metres west of Line 13 South.

• The north side of Lakeshore Road West: 470 metres west of Line 7 South, westerly for a distance of 930 metres.

• The east side of Line 6 South: Lakeshore Road West to Lake Simcoe.

• The east side of Line 11 South: Hawkestone Wharf Gate, northerly for 150 metres.

• The east side of Line 12 South: 125 metres north of Lakeshore Road East, northerly to the Rail Trail.

• The east side of Line 14 South: 50 metres north of Lakeshore Road East, northerly for a distance of 528 metres.

• The north side of Woodland Drive: 125 metres east of Line 15 South, easterly for a distance of 150 metres.

Safety RemindersYour Operations & Community Services Department would like to pass along some tips for the winter roads maintenance season. Please remember the following this snow season:

Winter Maintenance WorkSnow removal takes time especially in heavy accumulation. If you see snow removal equipment, keep a safe distance. You may see them, but they may not see you. Remember it takes several turns to clean an intersection and visibility is limited, so please have patience and be cautious.• Snow plows have limited control of the amount and

direction of the snow coming off the blade.• Driveways will have snow pushed back across the

driveway while plowing the road. Do not push snow back into the roadway.

• Watch for the plow blade when passing snow plows. They may be obscured by snow and cleared debris.

• Do not travel beside a snow plow. They can shift sideways after hitting snow packs or drifts.

• Plows can create temporary white-out conditions with swirling snow. Safely pull to the side or slow down in these conditions.

Mail BoxesInspect your mailbox to ensure that it is in good condition to be able to withstand all the rigours of the snow season. The box itself must be well attached to the post and in good repair so it can withstand the pressure of snow coming off the wing, and the plow.

Waste Bags and BinsPlease do not place garbage bags and/or containers, compost bins, or recycling bins, on the shoulder of the road or on top of snow banks. Instead, put them back at the culvert level in your driveway. This will help prevent them from filling in with snow or getting knocked over by snow from the plow.

Children PlayingInform your children about the dangers of playing in roadside snow banks and encourage them to play in the snow behind your house or in a park where their safety is not compromised.

Building forts and tunnels by the side of the road, as well as sliding or snowboarding on snow banks constitutes a real danger for your kids. It is difficult for motorists and snow removal trucks to see individuals playing in roadside snow banks and they may not be able to brake in time to avoid a potentially serious collision. Snow clearing vehicles could also bury forts built into snow banks without ever having known the fort was there.

IN THE COMMUNITY

The Oro District Lions Club GOING STRONG AFTER 45 YEARS The year 2018 marks the 45th anniversary of the Oro District Lions Club. Over this period, many individuals have given freely of their time and resources to try to ‘give back’ to their community. Our members are often asked – “Just what do Lions do?”. This special milestone gives cause to reflect on the answer to that question.

The Lions provided the original display case in the old arena at Guthrie. A special lighting system was installed for the figure skating club. The service club helped fund the ball diamond in Shanty Bay.

A major undertaking in the 1980’s was the securing of the land for the playing fields behind the arena. The club provided the original fencing and ball field lighting. The pavilion was erected in 2001, with most of the then 54 members having hands on involvement in the build.

The original ice rescue boat was a joint project with our Firefighters. The Lions provided $20,000.00 of the $30,000.00 purchase price. Lions supplied the first defibrillator at the arena, and since have purchased defibs and thermal imaging helmets for the fire department.

The Lions financed renovations to all of the Township halls in the early 1990’s. Each outdoor rink committee received cash for their operations in the late 2000’s. The new roof at the Oro Station hall and the ball diamond groomer were more recent projects.

Not all Lions’ projects involve writing a cheque. Each spring and fall a section of the Ridge Road is cleaned of litter as part of the County Roads Clean-up program. We help install the rink boards at the Oro Station Hall. We ring the bells at the Orillia Foodland to assist the Salvation Army Christmas Kettle campaign. Oro Lions have been a part of Barrie Xmas Cheer from its inception, and have handed out the frozen turkeys for the past several years when families come in for their food hampers and toys.

The Oro Lions have always tried to help our youth. Over the years various 4H clubs have been sponsored, as have Cubs and Scouts. 2018 is the 41st year that public speaking contests have been run at the local elementary schools. Lions also support four regional special needs camps – Lions Camp Dorset for Dialysis, Camp Huronda for Type 1 Diabetes, the Bob Rumball Camp of the Deaf, and the CNIB Lake Joseph Holiday Centre.

The Township recently recognized the contributions of the Oro District Lions by naming the new pavilion at the Bayview Memorial Park as the Lions Pavilion. Our Lions members past and present are honored to receive such acknowledgment. Our service club has recently been blessed to have recruited several ‘thirty-something’ members. This guarantees that we will be able to carry on our motto – “We Serve”- for years to come. We thank all our family and friends for your support, and we look forward to many more years of ‘giving back’ to our community.

After a winter of hibernating under the snow, it’s with great expectation we await a new gardening season. If you spent your winter looking through seed catalogues, planning new gardens or just anticipating the first shoots of your perennials popping through the ground, spring is an exciting time.

The Oro-Medonte Horticultural Society has been busy over the winter and we have a very exciting program for 2018. Our first meeting of the year is March 12th when we will welcome Darlene van Oorschot. Darlene has been working in the health care industry for 23 years and she plans to help us get our most important gardening tool, our bodies, ready for gardening with her presentation, “Ready! Set! Garden!”

On April 9th, Tara Nolan will do a PowerPoint presentation on “Raised Bed Revolution: Why Raised Beds Rule”. Tara will discuss the how, what, where and why of raised bed gardening giving us tips from her book “Build It, Fill It, Plant It...Garden Anywhere.”

On May 14th, we are honoured to welcome Paul LaPorte, owner of Ephemeral Ark Nursery and Past President of the North American Native Plant Society. Paul’s topic is “Building Biodiversity with Native Plants”. Through his presentation we will learn about the critical role native plants play in biodiversity. Enter or enjoy the Spring Flower Show at this meeting.

Be sure to mark your calendar for May 26th. That’s the date of our Annual Plant Sale at the Oro Fair Grounds. Start time is 10 a.m. sharp but come early to browse. Our Plant Sale is renowned throughout Simcoe County so don’t miss it!

Our meetings are free to anyone who wishes to attend but why not join for $10 and enjoy the benefits:• quarterly newsletters• floral design competitions and workshops• 8 meetings per year with excellent speakers, social

break with coffee/tea and homemade treats • 10% discount at a number of garden centres and local

businesses • Annual Plant Sale, Garden Tour and Photo Contest Don’t be intimidated by our name “Horticultural Society”. We are gardeners of all levels and welcome anyone who has an interest in or wants to learn more about gardening. Please join us - you will be glad you did!

Our monthly meetings are held at the Oro-Medonte Community Centre Banquet Hall located at 71 Line 4 North. The building is wheelchair accessible and meetings start at 7:30 p.m.

Everyone is very welcome so bring a friend and your own mug for break time to save the environment.

When care is beyond the Nurse Practitioner’s scope to manage, a physician is consulted. If necessary, you will be seen by both the Nurse Practitioner and the visiting physician. Visit www.npao.org for more information about Nurse Practitioners.

BILL DUE DATES

Water BillsWater usage is billed quarterly, with payment due dates falling on the last business day of February, May, August and November.

The fourth quarterly payment for 2017 usage must be made no later than Wednesday, February 28th and the first quarterly payment for 2018 usage must be made no later than Thursday, May 31st.

For more information about paying your Water Bill, or to sign up for preauthorized payment, please contact the Finance Department or visit our website.

Property TaxesProperty taxes are calculated annually by applying Council’s approved tax rates to property assessment values as provided by the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC). Tax rates include township, county, and education taxes.

For example, a residential property valued or “assessed” at $100,000 multiplied by the 2017 residential tax rate of 0.879281% yields a residential tax total of $879.28, which is broken down as follows:• Township Taxes: $405.74• County Taxes: $294.54• Education Taxes: $179.00

Payment for property taxes is due in four installments on the last business day of February, April, July and September respectively. To avoid interest charges, payment of the first Property Tax installment of 2018 must be made no later Wednesday, February 28th and payment of the second installment must be made no later than Monday, April 30th.

If you have questions or concerns regarding the current value assessment of your property, please contact MPAC at (866) 296-6722 or visit their website at www.mpac.ca.

motorists. When cyclists fail to obey the rules of the road, the support of motorists is lost.

• Be predictable. It is recommended that you ride within one (1) metre of the edge of the road when possible and that you ride in a smooth, straight, and predictable manner.

• Be visible. Wear brightly coloured clothing at all times and use lights and reflectors in low light conditions. Give the drivers as much of an opportunity to see you as possible.

• Groups - stay tight and to the right. Group cyclists should ride in tight and controlled formations and as close to the right side of the road as possible. This allows drivers approaching from behind to see if the road ahead is clear for a proper lane changing pass. If the group is obstructing traffic then the group should go single file until the obstruction has cleared.

Motorists: Please Pass with Care

Cyclists are vulnerable road users. While it is understood that slower vehicles have an obligation to move to the right to accommodate faster vehicles, it must also be understood that the law requires that the passing vehicles move to the left to perform safe and legal passes. A minimum of one (1) metre must exist between the passing vehicle and the cyclist. A vehicle cannot legally pass a cyclists while the road ahead is not clear.

Visit www.cyclesimcoe.ca to learn more about Cycle Simcoe or to find cycling routes in your area.

Simcoe County MTN Bike ClubThe Simcoe County Mountain Bike Club (SCMBC) was established to build and maintain recreational mountain bike trails in Simcoe County. The Club has land-use agreements with the County of Simcoe and private land owners for the use and maintenance of a variety of trails located throughout the Township.

The SCMBC welcomes and encourages all mountain bikers to get involved and participate in the protection of local trails. Email [email protected] or visit www.scmbc.ca for more information.

FAT BIKINGIn the summer, Oro-Medonte is known as a mountain biking mecca. From the Hardwood Ski and Bike Pan Am Games course to the locally maintained, Simcoe County Mountain Bike Club trails, our township has something that suites every rider’s style and ability.

But have you ever wanted the mountain biking season to last longer, start sooner, or simply never end? Then Fat Biking is for you!

With their extra-wide tires, Fat Bikes are specifically designed to navigate snowy trails and any terrain that would impede ordinary bikes.

Give it a try! Rentals and passes are available at: • Hardwood Ski and Bike (rentals and day passes)• Horseshoe Resort (rentals and day passes)• Ride Guides (guided tour operator)• Simcoe County Mountain Bike Club (memberships and

day passes available)

SHARE THE ROADCycling has proven to be one of the fastest growing sports in North America. With that comes higher volumes of cycling tourists and local cycling groups on our roadways. Cycle Simcoe would like to make sure everyone is having a fun and safe time this summer, so here are some tips for both motorists and cyclists.

Cyclists: Do your part by being a good ambassador for bicycling.

• Wear a helmet. A properly fitting helmet is the best protection against injury and is required by law for cyclists under 18 years old.

• Obey all traffic laws. Bicycles are considered vehicles under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, and have the same rights and responsibilities on public roadways as

of protecting and preserving this magnificent property. Membership fees are $25 annually.

Please check out our website www.copelandfriends.ca for more information and follow us on Facebook. We are a group of dedicated volunteers who are passionate about Copeland Forest and hope you can join us in celebrating and taking care of this special place.

Ganaraska Hiking Trail Association

The Oro-Medonte Ganaraska Hiking Club is one of nine hiking clubs within the Ganaraska Hiking Trail Association. The Ganaraska Hiking Trail extends from Port Hope on Lake Ontario to Glen Huron where it joins the Bruce Trail. It also includes a side trail from Copeland Forest to Midland and a side trail from near Glen Huron through Wasaga Beach and on to Midland. In total it covers approximately 500 km, with approximately 300 km being in Simcoe County and approximately 60 km being in Oro-Medonte. The Oro-Medonte chapter maintains 18.5 km from the Copeland Forest up to Vasey Road.

Visit www.ganaraska-hiking-trail.org or contact club president Christine Cornu at [email protected] or (705) 733-3825 for information about upcoming hikes and events. All are welcome to join in on any of the events. Hiking boots are recommended and drinking water is essential.

Lake Country Oro-Medonte Rail TrailThis 28 km, crushed stone surfaced trail runs between the cities of Barrie and Orillia on the old Canadian National Rail Line. With its flat, easy grading, the Rail Trail is an excellent place for a leisurely bike ride, walk, or run in the warmer months, or a cross-country skiing or snowshoeing adventure in the winter.

Along the way you’ll find some of the best in the natural beauty that Oro-Medonte has to offer. Quiet wetlands, busy beaver ponds, peaceful forests, rushing creeks and streams, picturesque farmland, and quick detours down to Lake Simcoe highlight the length of the trail.

Copeland Forest Friends Association The Copeland Forest is a 4,400-acre resource management area under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF). Its approximate boundaries are Ingram Road to the north, Line 5 to the east, Horseshoe Valley Road West to the south, and Penetanguishene Road to the west. Two of the reasons this property is so important is that it contains headwater for three watersheds draining into Georgian Bay and is the largest mature forest within commuting distance of the Greater Toronto Area. In partnership with the MNRF, the CFFA was established to bring greater stewardship to the Copeland Forest, which is facing increasing pressure from recreational interests. The goal of this non-profit organization is to conserve the natural integrity of the forest while facilitating compatible recreational opportunities.

The Copeland Forest welcomes outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy hiking, naturalist outings, fishing, hunting, horseback riding, mountain biking and snowshoeing. For those who enjoy winter outings in the Forest, we are pleased to announce that starting this winter season, the parking lot (marked P2 on our map) on Ingram Road just east of Line 4 will now be plowed as needed for the winter season.

A map is available to download that corresponds to a network of signed trails in the forest. And for only a toonie, you can purchase a high quality, water and tear proof map at these fine locations: In Craighurst: Loobie’s Restaurant, the Esso Gas Station, Woodside Pottery & Gallery, in Barrie: Sojourn, and Greenhawk. In Orillia, The Bird House Nature Company and the Couchiching Conservancy in Severn Township. As a non-profit group, the CFFA relies on membership fees and donations to carry out its mission
