ENERGY EFFICIENCYMultifamily Apartment Houses, Community Facilities and Residences for 1-4 Families
“As the owner of over two-dozen residential and
commercial buildings in Brooklyn, we are very con-
cerned about the cost of energy in the operation of
our buildings. We consistently turn to CEC for their
advice and the most up-to-date understanding of
best practices in the weatherization of existing
buildings.”
- Getz Obstfeld, President, Community Developers, Inc.
“Your crews insulated our whole house, weather-
stripped our doors, insulated our heating pipes,
improved our water heater, installed a solid dryer
exhaust pipe, installed CO and smoke detectors, in-
stalled CFL bulbs, and replaced our aerators and a
shower head. We are looking forward to seeing the
reduction on our utility bills.”

Since 1994, weatherization has been the core
program of CEC’s Energy Efficiency services.
CEC is the largest provider of weatherization
under New York State’s Weatherization
Assistance Program (WAP) and an approved
provider of the New York State Energy Research
and Development Authority’s energy efficiency
programs. Working with NYSERDA, CEC helps
building owners and home owners secure
government funds to offset the cost of energy
efficiency retrofits.

“What I can do at home to con-
serve energy is to have a solar-
powered fan, so that the fan
gets energy from the sun. Also I
should cut off all the lights
when I’m not using them to save
energy.”
- 8th Grader, IS 364, Brooklyn
In 2005 another division of CEC wasborn: Build It Green!NYC, betterknown as BIG!NYC.

As we look to the future, the climate crisis moreand more clouds what that future will look like.
Two things, however, show clearly. The earth we in-habit will differ consider-ably, and the way we livemust change significantly,if we are to survive.
It is a daunting challenge. But I am optimistic. I be-lieve that people through-out the world, includingmany national leaders, un-derstand the magnitude ofthe work that lies ahead. Ibelieve that ultimately wewill respond to this crisisand create an even betterworld than the one basedon fossil fuels for its en-ergy. I believe there willbe a more healthful exis-tence for all. And a greeneconomy that opens up more opportunities for more
people than the economy we leave behind.
It is CEC’s responsibility to provide leadership as wemove into this new world. It is CEC’s obligation to
continue to fight for, andimplement, programsthat ensure the neweconomy will be a func-tioning one; that morepeople will receive train-ing and chances to par-ticipate in this economy;and that the public willlearn about theprospects and possibili-ties opening beforethem.
CEC’s mission is not justto respond to the climatecrisis, but also to joinhands with others. Toturn the risk of losing allthat we know into the
opportunity to gain more than we have ever known.
