EVERY ONE OF US PLAYS A ROLE IN SUICIDE PREVENTIONThe 2019 Winter Accent had an article about the warning signs of suicide. IF SOMEONE IS SHOWING SOME OF THE WARNING SIGNS, WHAT NOW?Because suicide is such a taboo subject, asking the suicide question may be difficult. But if you are seeing thewarning signs, YOU most likely are the person who is in the best possible position to ask the suicide question.

HERE ARE SOME GUIDELINES ON HOW TO ASK THE SUICIDE QUESTION.• Plan a time and place to ask the suicide question• Try to get the person alone or in a private setting• Set aside some time so you have time to listen • Ask the question. The less direct approach may be to ask someone if they have been unhappy lately or havebeen so very unhappy they wished they were dead. The more direct approach would be to ask if they have everwanted to stop living or if they have ever thought about suicide?• Persuade the person to get help. Some ways to do this are by asking them if they will go with you to see a coun-selor or will they let you make an appointment to see someone or will they talk with you with staff at the crisisline and referral service.

Some people believe that if they ask the suicide question, they will put that idea in someone’s head. Suicidalthoughts are common with depressive illnesses, although not all people have them. If a person has been thinkingabout suicide, he will be relieved and grateful for your care and concern and your willingness to help.

NO ONE IS IMMUNE TO THE RISK OF SUICIDE. IF YOU WONDER, ARE UNSURE, OR YOU THINK A LOVED ONE, FRIEND, OR CO-WORKER IS SUICIDAL,

FIND CONFIDENTIAL HELP FROM THESE RESOURCES:• Call 911 if there is an emergency• Take your child to the Emergency Room for a risk assess-ment• Crisis Text Line: Text….MN to 741741• Crisis Line and Referral Service: 1-800-462-5525

• National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255• Contact the counselor at your child’s school• Make an appointment with a mental health clinic for counseling services
