2 COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS • 2017 - Volume 1

It just does not seem like April. Old man winter, for the most part, was asleep, and the Leafs are in playoff contention.

I am pleased to announce that the Community Living Chatham-Kent Board of Directors approved a new Collective Agreement between CLC-K and OPSEU Local 148. I extend a thank you to Lisa Blonde, Lesa Jansen, Linda Karnas, Mickey Kovacs, Brad Verfaillie, Wayne Easterbrook, Jennifer Ganley, Lisa Gee, Marisa Forsyth (OPSEU Regional Representative), and our terrific labour lawyer Paula Rusak for their efforts.

JOBWORX – Employment Services had an outstanding 2016/2017 year achieving thirty targets. Congratulations to all of the people who are successfully working throughout Chatham-Kent. A tip of the CLC-K hat goes out to Steve Stokley and his staff of Calvin Antaya, Nancy Underwood, and Kim Walker.

Partners for Planning hosted a webcast titled, The Art of Belonging, and CLC-K hosted a local webcast. The event was well attended, and several people from diverse backgrounds presented their viewpoints on the power of belonging and community.

CLC-K welcomes Mickey Kovacs, Director of Corporate Services. Mickey is a Chartered Professional Accountant and we are pleased to have him as a member of the Senior Management team.

Recently, Deb Walker, an Administrative Assistant, had her talents outside of work highlighted by the media. Deb transforms donated bridal dresses into Angel Gowns for babies who are stillborn or pass away shortly after birth. These gowns have been donated to the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance as well as hospitals in Leamington, London, Sarnia, and Windsor. She states, “I do it because I want a parent’s final memory of their child to be beautiful.” Deb, we are very proud of you.

Enjoy the spring season.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR LEGAL RIGHTSApril 11 at 7 p.m.

People with disabilities have the right to make their own decisions about issues that affect their lives. However, there are many circumstances in which this right is challenged. Individuals may be found to lack capacity to manage their own money and property, make their own decisions about medical treatment (or

other personal care matters), bring forward a legal action, or retain and instruct a lawyer.

Many people are surprised to learn that when a child with a disability reaches the age of majority(18), their parents are no longer their legal guardians. So how can parents protect the legal rights of their adult children? Is adult guardianship a viable alternative? What is the state of supported care in Ontario?

ALL ABOUT THE ODSP - April 26 at 12 p.m.

New updated information!! If your loved one with a disability requires financial help with basic living expenses, including medical expenses, they could be eligible for the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP). Understanding how this program works and how to maintain it alongside other financial resources will ensure your loved one continues to receive this support for as long as he or she may need it.

THE HENSON TRUST - June 7 at 12 p.m.

Financial planning for an individual with a disability can be a bit of a puzzle. Leonard Henson was a true hero. Like so many of our cherished advocates he was motivated by trying to protect and plan for his daughter with a disability. Today, the Henson Trust goes the extra mile in not only safeguarding ODSP benefits, but secures great flexibility around estate planning.

Discovering Dreams, Chris and Joey Moss met in March of 2013 when Joey gave Chris a tour of the Edmonton Oilers locker room. Joey has been the locker room attendant for the Oilers for the past 30+ years. Since their initialmeeting, Joey and Chris have continued their friendship, visiting each other in Edmonton or Ontario.

Joey’s recent visit included stops at Gretzky’s Restaurant, the Air Canada Centre, and Colasanti’s where he met Andrew Banar, the owner of Group Hug Apparel (www.grouphugapparel.com) and to take in anOilers/Leafs game. Chris’s housemates also watch for Joey during Oilers games on TV and were very excited to be able to spend some time getting to know him during his visit to Chatham.

On January 27, 2017 Mary was excited to go to the Windsor Casino with Carey to see Dancing with the Stars. Mary watched the dancers closely, and listened to the great music. After the show, Mary enjoyed eating at the casino before heading home.

On February 11, 2017, Kim ventured to London to watch the Monster Jam Show at Budweiser Gardens. Kim enjoyed seeing the different trucks do some groovy tricks, but especially liked the female driver, and a truck from Canada.

Although it was quite loud, Kim watched with enthusiasm, cheering the drivers on!

Connecting Lives

In the fall 2016, Beverly enjoyed a magical holiday in Walt Disney World, Florida. Bev enjoyed visiting and hugging all of his pals, especially his favourite Donald and Daisy Duck. He worked hard, saving his money for a very long time to make his dream come true.

Bev spent much time planning his magical vacation with Anna Scott from Pure Magic Vacations. Together, they planned the visit to fully enjoy everything he loves about Disney World. Bev had an exceptional time visiting Epcot, Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, and Hollywood Studios. He stayed at the Art of Animation Resort featuring “Cars”. Bev enjoyed the fast rides, exploring the animal features, singing with the characters and the food.

Bev spent an amazing week at Walt Disney World and has magical memories that will last a lifetime!
