VOLLEYBALL NEWS

JPC dominated the courts at the RGHS volleyball competition last Tuesday afternoon. We had six teams competing - two Junior Mixed teams, three Senior Boys teams and one Senior Girls team. Congratulations to the Senior A Boys who had a runaway victory against Lakes High. Special mention to Hozanna Lopez who joined the boys when they only had five players - great spikes! Senior Boys B beat Senior Boys C by only 1 point, very even. Senior Girls A were defeated by RGHS but had great moments in their game. Junior Mixed B defeated Junior Mixed A - ruthless serving - and Junior Mixed A also lost against Reporoa.

FROM THE SICKBAY Please notify the nurse if your child’s medical circumstances have changed. This includes broken bones/sprains, concussion, muscle strains, medical diagnosis etc. This is so we can support your child through these medical changes.

NORTHERN DISTRICT U15 GIRLS CRICKET TOURNAMENT This weekend saw the completion of the U15 Northern Districts cricket tournament for two of our female cricketers playing for Bay of Plenty: Sadie Stewart and Freya Lord. The final round-robin, and then finals, were held in Hamilton on Sunday at the Waikato University campus. The team had faced Waikato Valley and Hamilton in the previous rounds with two convincing wins and this week saw the toughest competition against Counties Manukau, where they lost by 3 runs. The showdown continued in the finals with BOP vs Counties again. Counties set a formidable target of 173 and our BOP girls put in an admirable chase but fell short by 17 runs. Sadie's figures 1st game: bowling 2 overs for 6; batting 9 not out. 2nd game: bowling 2 overs, 2 for 14 Freya's figures 1st game: bowling 2 overs for 12. 2nd game: bowling 2 overs, 1 for 16; batting 5 not out. I was very proud of how they represented themselves and Rotorua! Submitted by parent

RACE TO REGENERATE - THE GREAT KAURI RUN

The Great Kauri Run, held on the Coromandel peninsula on Saturday 2 May 2020, comprises of a series of trail runs or

walks.

200 years ago, most of the Coromandel peninsula was covered in Kauri forest. Today very few of these majestic giants

of the forest remain. A kauri tree is planted along the trail for each person that participates in the event, and the vision

is to plant 10,000 trees over the next ten years to create an avenue of Kauri all the way from Waikawau to

Coromandel. To date 3,385 kauri have been planted, covering a distance of 13km.

There are five event distances, for all ages and range of fitness: Family walk/run - 5km

The Kauri Loop - 12km

The Kauri Half Marathon - 22km

The Kauri Classic - 30km

The Kauri Ultra - 65km

All races finish at the Coromandel Township.

For more information and entries go to www.kaurirun.co.nz or contact Hannah Gapes [email protected]

CATHOLICS RETURING HOME

This is a refresher course for

Catholics who wish to return to the

practice of their Catholic faith or for

Catholics who wish to renew their

Catholic faith.

The programme presents the

treasures of the Church over four

weeks by text and video.

We look at ways of praying, creating

the habit of prayer and having a personal relationship with

Jesus.

The next programme runs weekly at 7.00 pm on

Tuesday nights commencing, 3rd March 2020 for four

weeks until 24th March at St. Mary's, corner of Seddon

and Ranolf Street. The July programme runs weekly on

Thursday nights starting Thursday 9th July for four weeks

until 30th July.

The programme gives people an opportunity to ask

questions and have a discussion in an informal setting and

to make new friends as everyone who returns to the

practice of their faith needs support.

After the Catholics Returning Home programme those

who attended are welcome to start the Alpha Programme

which begins on 3rd March 2020 at 10.30 am or the 3rd

September 2020 at 6.30 pm also at St Mary’s.

An important part of returning to the practice of one’s

faith is getting into the habit of attending Sunday Mass

weekly.

Confession is also essential before receiving Holy

Communion if you have been away from the Church. We

look at how to go to Confession and how to make it more

approachable.

For any enquires please email Fr Eamon Kennedy

at [email protected]

You are very welcome to attend and we would love to see

you.

Kind regards

Fr Eamon Kennedy

Each year, students in YEAR 8 PARTICIPATE IN A PILGRIMAGE, visiting sites of significant importance to our Catholic heritage in Rotorua. Please read the following details: Students will wear their school uniform on the day of their Pilgrimage and will need to take with them a lunch, snacks and a water bottle. Also, they will need to have a sun hat and jacket in case of inclement weather. Students will be transported by bus which will leave promptly at 8.45am. Therefore I am recommending students do not attend form time that day, instead they will need to gather outside RSC by the gate where a roll will be taken. The significant sites are:

Rotorua Hospital Chapel (where the first Catholic church was built),

St Michael's Church which was built in 1888 following the church on hospital hill being destroyed by fire. Also of note is the Church car park was the site of Mary MacKillop's first school - 1903.

St Mary's Church in Ranolf Street which was built in 1954 to support the population of Catholics in Rotorua. A new church was built in 1987 as the previous church was too small.

The Tyburn Monastery at Ngakuru - at the invitation of Bishop Denis Browne the Benedictine order of Sister's of the Sacred Heart of Jesus established a Monastery in March 2009.

My thanks in advance to Veronica and Cordula who have agreed to attend on particular days to support the RST teachers. I will organise the EOTC plans for the Pilgrimages, teachers attending will need to read and sign the Safety Action plan. Schedule of dates for Year 8 Pilgrimages: Tuesday 3 March - 8MB & 8PR with Vanessa Locke and Veronica Aislabie Tuesday 17 March - 8TW & 8LV with Gillian Cook and Cordula Taiwo Thursday 19 March - 8BM & 8LP with Gillian Cook and Whaea Mercia Mrs B Fredricksen Campus Minister E: [email protected]

Kia ora tātou. Warm greetings to you all from the Counsellors. For whanau new to JPC, here is a little bit of background about our plans to support good mental health for students at JPC. Last year, mental health surveys were undertaken for students, staff and community and, overwhelmingly, participants supported the introduction at school, of practices such as mindfulness, to nurture student well-being. Mindfulness is simply about being present in the moment and noticing what is going on for us in the here and now. Making time for daily mindfulness throughout the day can hugely contribute to our mental well-being in providing brief respite from the busyness of the day. As well, it enables us to observe the patterns and habits of our minds and learn to tame the incessant chattering of our thoughts. At school, we are now underway with daily mindfulness practice. If you are interested in trying this for yourself, here is a daily practice you might find helpful.

Daily Mindful Meditation:

Sit comfortably in your seat, hands resting gently in your lap

Close your eyes or keep them open with a downward focused gaze. Then take a few deep, breaths.

Become aware of your breathing. Notice the air moving in and out of your nostrils and the rise and fall of your chest and tummy. Allow your breaths to come naturally without forcing them.

Begin counting your breaths, mentally saying the number as you breathe out. Or instead, think the word “in” as you breathe in and “out” as you breathe out.

When your thoughts wander (which they will do a lot in the beginning), gently return to the sensation of breathing. Don’t judge yourself or your intrusive thoughts. Just lead your mind back to focused attention on breathing.

As you are breathing, you’ll notice other sensations like sounds, physical discomfort or emotions. Simply notice these as they arise and then gently return to your breathing.

If you find you have been lost in thought, view your thoughts with no judgement or emotion. Label them by saying “There are those thoughts again.” Then return your attention to the breathing.

Continue with this until you are just a witness to all sounds, sensations, emotions and thoughts as they arise and pass away.

Take a few more deep, cleansing breaths, open your eyes, and gently come back to being present in your day.

Yours mindfully, Nancy Macmillan and Neil Carter

Dear Parents and Whanau, RE: AUTHORITY TO SHARE INFORMATION With the government’s introduction of Learning Support Coordinators, we will have new staff who will work across our local

Catholic schools. Up-to-date, valid information will help us ensure our students access the right support and resources to meet their needs. These Coordinators are going to add value to our learning programs by providing targeted support for students with any additional needs.

We are asking all parents to complete this form to ensure we are able to provide the best possible access to support and resources that we can. Why we are sharing information

Our school is part of a group of education providers that shares information to:

identify children and young people who might need additional learning support

ensure that the adults who work with children (such as teachers or teacher aides) have the skills and resources they need to support them

decide what additional learning support would help children and young people, whether individually or in groups.

The Ministry of Education may use information on the register for the purpose of administration and analysis, for example to find out about the overall numbers of children requiring specific types of support. This will allow the Ministry to plan ahead for numbers of staff and specialists, and other services and types of support.

What information we will share

The members of our group of Education providers and the Ministry of Education share information for a collective learning support register that contains:

name, gender and ethnicity to identify support that reflects the child’s identity, language and culture

date of birth and year level, to identify support that is appropriate to their age

the type of support needed

any special ability, health issue, disability or learning need that means a child needs particular types of support

services and support they are already receiving

If you agree, we will put information about your child’s additional support needs on the group’s learning support register.

Who will see the information?

Only a small group of people will have access to the register for the purposes explained in the first paragraph. It will include our SENCO, the Learning Support Coordinator, a resource teacher learning and behaviour, and the learning support facilitator (a Ministry of Education staff member). These people will meet regularly to discuss the register and how best to respond to the needs of children and young people on the register. In some situations, other organisations may be able to help to determine the appropriate support for a child or young person. We will seek your agreement before other organisations are involved.

How we will keep the information safe?

Any information will be transmitted and stored securely via password protected files, which only authorised people will be able to access. Information about children and young people no longer enrolled with an education provider in the community or no longer needing learning support will be removed from the group register quarterly.

How you can see and correct the information?

You can request access to the information for your child through the school learning support service manager and may correct any inaccuracies.

What will happen if you don’t agree to your child’s information being shared?

If you do not agree to your child’s information being included on the register, we will still provide support for your child’s needs within our school. But if your child’s information is not on the register, they may not be able to gain early access to resources provided across the group.

You can decide to withdraw your consent at any time.

Yours sincerely

Mrs Paulene Walsh JPC SENCO

_________________________________________________________________________ Please print off and return this slip to Paulene Walsh via the JPC public reception.

I agree to personal information about ________________________________ [child’s full name] being included on the register and that information being shared with the group of people listed for the purposes explained above.

************************************************************************************ ON CAMPUS EXPERIENCE - OTAGO UNIVERSITY Applications are now open for the On Campus Experience (OCE), which is a wonderful opportunity for Year 13 Māori secondary school students to explore the University of Otago and the city of Dunedin. The OCE scholarship provides each successful applicant with return airfares to Dunedin, accommodation, meals and activities. Students will have the opportunity to attend lectures in their areas of interest, as well as meet academic staff and current students. They will experience life in a Residential College, and meet the Māori Centre staff, who provide great support for Māori students when they come to Otago. Entries are sought from full time Year 13 students of Māori descent, who are currently enrolled in a New Zealand secondary school, and are considering studying at the University of Otago in 2021. All applicants should be students who are completing an appropriate programme at secondary school level, which will lead them to meet University Entrance. Successful OCE students will be selected to attend one of two OCE programmes in 2020 (the one application will cover both dates).

First OCE 3 - 7 May 2020 (includes Tertiary Open Day) Second OCE 5 – 9 July 2020

Applications are to be completed online: https://www.otago.ac.nz/future-students/oce/ Applications close: 5.00 pm Friday 13 March

************************************************************************************ GATEWAY Gateway is known as a bridge between school and the world beyond. For senior students considering a trade, the Gateway programme allows them to get hands-on experience with tradespeople while gaining credits. It can be an excellent stepping stone into an apprenticeship. But it is not all about the trades! We place students into a variety of workplaces including the Service Industries (event management, retail and hospitality), Primary Industries (animal care and forestry), and Social and Community Services (early childhood education and health care). Gateway helps students explore a career that's right for them, along with an introduction to basic skills in that industry. Year 12 or 13 students interested in joining the Gateway Programme, or finding out more about what is involved, can see Rachael Hindrup (the Gateway Coordinator) in the Careers Department.
