FOR THE UPPER SCHOOL COMMUNITY 17TH EDITION / DECEMBER 2016 MAKE-A-WISH FOUNDATION The Harvard-Westlake Community Council was honored to partner with the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Los Angeles to reveal a trip to Disneyland for a 5-year-old cancer survivor. Leighton Kaba, who is a young leukemia patient, had a special day at Harvard-Westlake which included princess-themed magic, a beautiful musical performance, and a horse-drawn carriage ride through our campus to a sweets-filled cafeteria. This special event took place on November 14 during an all- school assembly produced by our students. HARVARD-WESTLAKE PARENTS ASSOCIATION COMMUNITY SERVICE DAY On November 19, Harvard-Westlake students and parents came together for the Fall Family Community Service Day at Operation Gratitude in Chatsworth. Operation Gratitude is a non-profit organization dedicated to sending care packages to our troops stationed abroad. Harvard-Westlake families prepared and assembled care packages in appreciation of their service to our nation. Harvard-Westlake has been ranked the #4 Best Private School in America and the #1 Best Private School in California for 2017 by Niche. Niche provides in-depth analysis of every college and K-12 school in the United States. The Best Private High Schools ranking is based on rigorous analysis of key statistics and millions of reviews from students and parents. Ranking factors include SAT/ACT scores, the quality of colleges that students consider, student-teacher ratio, private school ratings, and more. HW COMMUNITY BLOOD DRIVEThank you to Kitty Luo ‘18 and the many other students who donated blood at the fall blood drive with the American Red Cross. This 26th annual event is co-sponsored by the Harvard-Westlake Parents Association and takes place on campus each year. Thank you to all who participated and demonstrated a Purpose Beyond Ourselves. The next blood drive will be held on April 28, 2017.

STUDIO CITY FAMILY TENNIS FESTIVALHarvard-Westlake was proud to sponsor and participate in the 2nd annual Studio City Family Tennis Festival. Held at Beeman Park on November 6, the free event featured local tennis pros who introduced the sport and provided instruction to more than 50 children from the Studio City community. Harvard-Westlake joined with the Studio City Residents Association, Save LA River Open Space, United States Tennis Association, Campbell Hall School, and the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks to host the event.

HARVARD-WESTLAKE OUTREACH PERFORMERS The Harvard-Westlake Outreach Performers had a great time connecting with students at St. Martin in the Fields School in Canoga Park. Harvard-Westlake students performed a 45-minute variety show that included song, improvisation, creative arts and crafts, and poetry. The ensemble is comprised of 24 students whose performances always bring lots of smiles and enjoyment to their audiences. Past performance locations include the Ronald McDonald House at Children’s Hospital, senior care facilities, and local elementary schools.
