Miracles at the GatesFor the new season we have set out on, God prepared us by speaking to us about ‘the gates’. It is time to turn outwards as we are reminded of our mission to a broken world that needs to hear about the gospel of God’s grace and experience its power. The gates speak to us of both being sent out into the world, and of welcoming those who come through our gates into the church community. Going out and coming in, miracles can take place at the gates.

One of the first miracles recorded in the book of Acts was at the Gate Beautiful, where a crippled beggar ended up walking, and leaping and praising God (Acts 3:1-10). God spoke to Peter in an amazing vision that was going to result in the gospel breaking out of ‘gates’ that might otherwise have kept it locked within the Jewish religion (Acts 10:1-22). Significantly, an angel had first spoken to a Gentile centurion, Cornelius, who had then sent his men to find Peter, and they stopped at the gate to the house where he was staying (10:17). The Holy Spirit tells Peter to go down and speak to them – at the gate! The apostle realised that God was in this, and so he invited them across the threshold into the house. This generous hospitality was prophetically momentous for the opening up of the whole world to the gospel. And it was the divine appointment at the gate that made all the difference.

Then there was the time when Paul and his companions went outside the city gate looking for a place to pray and instead ended up sharing the gospel with a group of women (Acts 16:13-15) one of them being Lydia who was to be a significant figure in the early church. And so just in these few cases, we see it was at the gates, or as they went through the gates, that miracles happened. Miracles of healing, of angelically arranged divine appointments, and of new birth. Significantly also, these miracles were among those who religious people, of that time would have overlooked and dismissed – crippled beggars, Gentiles and women. But Jesus often reached out to just such as these. As we respond to God’s prophetic direction and are prepared to pass through the gates, or welcome people through our gates, let’s expect miracles.
