Written by MARCY VERBURG, M.A. Owner Snap Fitness

Sometimes people avoid strength training as they see it as something for only bodybuilders or athletes. However, the latest studies indicate that strength is key to a long and healthy life for all of us. In fact, it’s the most important thing you can add to your workout.

Simply put “strength training” helps you build better muscle. And muscle health is one of the largest predictors of a longer life. There is good science to prove this. A study in British Journal of Medicine with almost 9000 participants found that a person’s strength is a strong predictor of longevity even holding for factors such as cardiovascular fitness.

Why do we need muscle? Because it helps maintain balance (reducing fall risk), improve coordination and posture, and increase energy. It aids in weight loss and maintaining a healthy weight. Add these factors together and you will improve both longevity and quality of life.

Muscle is also crucial in aging well. People who are inactive can lose as much as 3-5% of their muscle mass every decade after age 30. While everyone loses some muscle each decade strength training can help prevent the loss.

Further, according to the Mayo Clinic, strength training can help manage many chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, depression, obesity and even back pain. And women will lower the risk of osteoporosis and kyphosis (rounding of the back).

Health organizations are now prescribing “strength training exercise”. This means using weights (free weights, machines, kettlebells etc.) or resistance tubing to increase muscular strength and endurance. While cardiovascular exercise such as walking is good for you, it does not provide the same benefits as using resistance. Most experts recommend using weights at least 2 or 3 times per week.

Get some coaching to make the most of your new routine. Most fitness centres offer a personal fitness assessment and free intro session with a Kinesiologist or certified Personal Trainer. Take advantage of this to understand how you can personally benefit. Or if space permits invest in some home equipment.

Most everyone can benefit from strength training. Of course if you have any concerns, conditions or have not exercised in a long time its best to consult your Physician before starting.

MUSCLE IS NOT JUST FOR LOOKS... IT’S FOR LIFE!

GRAND OPENING: Saturday June 11th - JOIN US!After five long years of preparation and countless volunteer hours, we are planning a free public event to celebrate this great achievement. Help us make this happen!

We aim to bring the leaders of Toronto and the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation together to cut the ceremonial ribbon and lead off festivities. If all goes well with fundraising, we’ll put on cultural events of music, dance, and art from both communities. This celebration will produce the first performances of indigenous music played on the streets of our neighbourhood in more than 200 years!

PEACE GARDEN GRAND OPENING

Submitted by: Veroncy

A momentous year of urban gardening by our Green Team yielded plenty of delights on the street and lots of shots to share. In these photos taken among our 21 planting beds, you’ll see what evolved, and both treasures and trouble spots discovered since spring. Even this late in the season, the fall gardens are a reminder of what makes this neighbourhood awesome.

ENVIRONMENTAL DAY It was a beautiful sunny Saturday for the annual Community

Environment Day that was hosted by Councillor Gord Perks and the City of Toronto. The well organized event had cars lining up and helpers getting everything out of trunks quickly and efficiently. Residents were able to properly dispose of household hazardous waste including old batteries, solvents, fluorescent bulbs, expired medications and more. Crews also accept old electronics including cell phones, computers, printers and TVs. The huge compost pile was a very popular spot as many came with all kinds of carrying apparatus’ to load up and bring home to get their gardens Spring ready.

ZOONOSES 101 - (some) diseases we share with our pets.

HEY DOC, CAN I GET THAT TOO?

ncreasingly, studies are confirming what many of us already intuitively know - the psychological and physical benefits provided by our beloved furry family members. However, our non-human companions don’t just share our homes, and often our beds with us; they can also share some diseases. Last month we read about the rise in wildlife rabies in Ontario, which, fortunately, can be

prevented in our pets by vaccination. The following are some of the more common zoonoses (diseases that can be spread from animals to people), that dogs and/or cats may carry in their intestinal tract, and things you can do as a pet owner to minimize the risks for your family and the greater community:

INTESTINAL PARASITESHookworms and roundworms can be transmitted through hand-mouth contact with infected stool, eating contaminated food, or by burrowing through a person’s skin. They have evolved to live in the intestine of dogs and cats, but in humans they can spread throughout the body, landing in organs like the liver or eyes, and leading to serious consequences including blindness.

The most common tapeworm found in dogs and cats, called Dipylidium, is not infectious to people. However, another tapeworm species found in foxes and coyotes, called Echinoccoccus, can cause severe problems in the central nervous system and organs in humans and dogs. There have been a small number of cases in dogs recently in Ontario (where it was not known to exist previously), and there is concern that it may be present in wildlife populations here, presenting a risk to our health and our canine companions.

Preventing these infections is fairly simple - scooping poop, hand-washing, house-training, performing routine fecal tests and following veterinary deworming and parasite prevention recommendations. Preventing dogs from preying on rodents, in which Echinococcus spends some of its life cycle, can also reduce their risks of acquiring the disease.

INFECTIOUS DIARRHEAThere are a number of infectious causes of diarrhea in dogs and cats that can also cause illness in people when ingested. Salmonella and Campylobacter are two bacteria that can be acquired by ingestion of raw meat diets. Giardia and Cryptosporidium are protozoan (single-celled) organisms that are found most commonly in contaminated water. Feeding your pet a commercial cooked diet and limiting their exposure to potentially contaminated water will help protect our pets, and us, from these infections.

Fortunately, with good hygiene and veterinary care, the risk of acquiring any of these diseases is very low. However, it is important for anyone in contact with pets to be aware of the risks, which are higher in young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and other immune-compromised people. In a high density setting like Toronto, where we are all sharing the same urban spaces, it is our responsibility as pet owners to do what we can to prevent zoonotic diseases in our pets, for their health and ours.

JUNE BUG is a 7 year old lab mix. This sweet lady has a sad story - she was rescued in Thailand by Soi Dog Foundation. Dogs in Thailand are often snatched from the street and shoved into a tiny cage with up to 10 other dogs for transport out of the country for the illegal dog meat trade. Adopt-a-dog/Save-a-life is working with Soi Dog Foundation to foster some of these dogs so that they may find homes in Canada.

She is a very special dog - everyone who meets her is struck with her sweet and gentle way. She’s slowly adjusting to her

new foster home in Toronto. Her foster mom has seen steady gains and only has good things to say about June Bug. June Bug’s adopter will have to be patient and understanding and give her time to gain confidence.
