Background and History

� DAI = Dinaric Arc Initiative� Broad collaborative framework of:

WWF, IUCN, UNESCO, UNDP, CoE, FAO*, UNEP, EURONATUR, SNV

� Objective: add value to the ongoing programs of its partners by implementing joint projects

� Focus: preservation of the environmental and cultural diversity and heritage of the Dinaric Arc region

� Priority: integration of environmental approaches across all relevant sector policies

� Elaboration of a preliminary concept for a joint intervention in the Dinara Mountain and surroundings Karst Polje areas

What are Karst-Poljes ...

Karst is a three-dimensional landscape shaped by dissolution of soluble layers of bedrock, mostly limestone.

Display distinctive surface features and underground drainages, there may be little or no surface drainage



... What are Karst-Poljes

� Karst-Polje (polje = field) is a large flat plain in karst territory

� Some poljes of the Dinaric Alps are inundated during rainy winter and spring seasons and the water disappears through shafts into the underground



Joint Formulation Mission

� Objectives: – Elaborate full project proposal (review situation,

verify analysis, review objectives, review and complete log-frame)

� Mission Team:– composed of experts from FAO, Euronatur, SNV,

WWF and independent consultants with expertise in value chain management, natural resources management, spatial planning, nature protection management, rural tourism development, multi stakeholder process facilitation, rural development, freshwater resources management

� 14-30 April 2008



Processes

� Stakeholder meetings in Livno & Trilj

– senior representatives of institutions at Cantonal/County level (agriculture, environment, tourism, etc.), representatives of Tourism Boards, farmers’ associations and NGO’s

– needs assessment through plenary discussion and group work and arranging meetings for the field visits

� Field visits in both areas

– farms, processing facilities, rural communities and tourism activities

� Group and plenary work

– elaboration of logical framework, activities, work-plan and budget

Environment Friendly Practices

� GAP: Good Agricultural Practices contributing to maintenance of landscape, biodiversity and preservation of environment, thus positively impacting on water quality and natural habitats and bringing savings or additional profits at farm level

� IPM: Integrated Pest Management contributes effectively to reducing significantly the use of pesticides and increasing farmers income while maintaining high quality standards

� Organic, when sound and possible..

� Enhance capacity of public and private support services to adjust their advice to the evolving demand of the agricultural sector

planning process

� Increase the capacity of policy makers to ensure biodiversity and environmental sustainability

– Example:

GIS map with important biodiversity areas for the two Poljes

Survey and monitoring of cultural and natural values

Ensure sustainability of mowing and grazing on traditional grassland landscape

� Determine the number of livestock needed to maintain biodiversity of meadows in the poljesand incorporate into the land use planning
