WALLACEA HOTSPOT
BIOLOGICAL
IMPORTANCE
Forest ecosystem: primary
forest, monsoon forest,
dry forest
Karst ecosystem
Freshwater ecosystem:
swamps, rivers, volcanic
lakes
Marine ecosystem: coral
reefs, sea grass,
mangrove, ocean
trenches, sea mounts
BIOLOGICAL
IMPORTANCE
Hawksbill Turtle/Critically endangered
- Important populations of globally widespread species
- High endemism of fauna and flora
- Site-specific species: many species found at only one
site or two sites

SITE OUTCOMES
Ridge-to-Reef KBAs
64 terrestrial KBAs are directly linked to 58 marine KBAs:
- 27 terrestrial KBAs are islands surrounded by marine KBAs
- 37 terrestrial and marine KBAs share a boundary
CORRIDOR OUTCOMES
Defining Corridors
10 terrestrial corridors – forests on each large island
16 marine corridors – ecological processes and migratory routes
MARINE PRIORITIES
16 marine corridors were identified
5 corridors are priorities based on their rank for biological importance,
proximity to terrestrial clusters, funding need
NATIONAL PRIORITY
• Conservation areas target:
- 2015: 16.5 million ha (165,000 km2); 2020: 20 million ha (200,000 km2)
• Restoration of coastal areas :
- 2015: 50 sites; 2020: 85 sites
• Effective management of coastal areas:
- 2015: 17 sites; 2020: 35 sites
• Establishment of local conservation areas at district/provincial level
• Conservation and management of ecosystem essential outside of PAs: mangroves, karst, corridors
• Small islands ecosystem
