here’s one thinG you should know about Goshen students: they really like to sinG!They sing at soccer games. They sing during chapel. And, of course, they sing in any one of the college’s nine music ensembles (Chamber Choir, Men’s Chorus and Women’s World Music Choir, to name a few).

Music is our most popular minor – one fourth of all students are involved in an ensemble – but if you can’t

carry a tune, don’t worry; there are plenty of other ways to get involved. Join the Ecological Stewardship Committee to help the campus “go green.” Teach local school kids the joys of collage making through Peace of the Arts. Or improve your reflexes and coordination with the Juggling Club. Wherever your interests lie, you’ll have no trouble finding a friendly, welcoming group of people to share them with.

feeling dramatic? consider joining the Goshen college Players and taking part in one of the college’s many

theatrical productions. one-act and improvisational

performances are popular, as is opera. members of

the Gc Players also have the opportunity to travel to professional performances,

participate in theater festivals and attend a theater

course in london.

students with literary ambitions can develop their respective voices with the Pinchpenny Press, which publishes chapbooks five times a year, and broadside, which focuses on poetry. aspiring journalists and broadcasters will find their outlets in 91.1fm the Globe, our campus radio station; The Correspondent, a student-produced television news show; and The Record, Goshen’s weekly student newspaper.

ceLebrate service.

fine-tune your faith.usinG your God-Given Gifts to imProve the lives of others is a wonderful way to express your faith – and at Goshen, the call to serve is at the very heart of our campus culture. Throughout the year, students and faculty volunteer in the immediate community, as well as abroad, during Study-Service Term. On Celebrate Service Day, classes are cancelled and the entire campus works side-by-side building Habitat houses, assisting the elderly, cleaning up local parks and helping out at area shelters.

Of course, it’s also important to be able to share your faith with others. On-campus worship opportunities include chapel, Catholic mass, hymn sings, Taizé prayer service (a candlelight service patterned after the worship of the Taizé community in France) and conversation cafés, where students can get together informally for discussion. Many students also attend local churches.

That everyone in the world will have adequate water. Clean water is necessary for our survival and for the environment. It ties into my healthcare work; clean drinking water is important for keeping people healthy and allowing their immune systems to be strong. And, it’s a peace issue: There is often conflict over who “owns” natural resources, and who cares for them.

after Graduation:

I will be working in the nursing field, hopefully, and also continuing with my service activities. There are so many facets of service that are important to me and Goshen has reinforced those values. I’m involved with the Ecological Stewardship Committee and the Eco-PAX club, working on sustainability and environmental efforts on campus.

why Goshen:

I spent a gap year between high school and college doing volunteer service and my house leaders were Goshen graduates. They spoke so highly of Goshen that I had to visit. I was able to sit in on some classes and the professors took time to talk with me and find out what I wanted from college. That made an impression.

Our student-athletes always give it their all – and in the process garner some serious praise. In 2011, 34 Goshen College students earned NAIA All American Scholar-Athlete standing and two were named All Americans. We sent 13 track and field athletes to the national championships. And in recent years Goshen has also been recognized as an NAIA “Champion of Character” for having student-athletes who are as serious about sportsmanship as they are about scores.

And when they’re not working hard on the court (and the field and the track), Goshen student-athletes like to get involved, and give back. Through the “Leaf Relief” program, members of the Goshen athletic department donate their time and effort to charitable organizations such as Toys for Tots, American Cancer Society, LaCasa and others.

the maple leafs are members of the mid-central college conference, a league that’s competitive at both state and national levels.

Goshen offers such intramural team sports as outdoor coed soccer, coed volleyball, basketball, indoor soccer, sand volleyball and ultimate frisbee. individual sports include table tennis, racquetball and badminton.

goshen’s worLd-cLass music center is one of the most imPressive venues around. in fact, a certain music industry biGwiG recently described its acoustics as “…better than carneGie hall.” the music center has hosted Performances from a number of internationally acclaimed musicians, includinG Poncho sanchez, the Punch brothers, estonian national symPhony orchestra and eileen ivers.

or action-packed, depending.with all that Goes on at Goshen, it’s nice to have a relaxed, comfortable Place to call “home.” Residency is required for most students (the exception being if you’re 23 or older, or live with immediate family), and housing options on campus range from traditional residence halls to small-group housing to apartment living. Every living space is fully furnished, and each residence hall is staffed with a specially trained resident adviser. Underclass residence halls have the additional support of a ministry leader, who also lives on-site and is there to nurture the spiritual lives of students.

That’s indoors. Outdoors, get ready to explore! The city of Goshen is perfectly situated for outdoor adventuring. Grab your bike and head down the Millrace Trail, which picks up just off campus, or for a longer ride try the Pumpkinvine, a “rails-to-trails” path that crosses Elkhart County. You can also go camping at nearby Lake Michigan. Or head to downtown Goshen for live music; excellent, authentic Mexican food; and shopping at the Farmer’s Market (or in the boutiques of the Old Bag Factory).

history Goshen was founded in 1894 with a mission to educate young people while serving the church and the world. Today it’s a nationally recognized, private Christian college and the number one destination for forward-thinking peacemakers.

affiLiation Goshen College is affiliated with the historically peaceful Mennonite Church USA. Currently more than 40 different Christian denominations and several world religions are represented on campus. Our doors are open to all.

Location The crossroads of America, in Northern Indiana. Goshen is about an hour from South Bend and Fort Wayne, and within easy reach (three hours or less) of Chicago, Detroit, Grand Rapids and Indianapolis.
