“ECHANDO RAICES- TAKING ROOT”

The Western Mass Interfaith Coalition for Peace and Justice and the Western Mass Coalition for Immi-grants’ and Workers’ Rights will present a

showing of the acclaimed film “Echando Raices-Taking Root.” In 3, 20-minute segments of “Echando Raices-Taking Root”, immigrants from many diverse countries tell their stories of the struggle to come to and make it in the United States. The film will be shown on Thursday, September 27th at St. Mary’s Parish Hall, 3 Elm Street, Northampton at 7:00 PM. Following the movie will be a discussion panel with time for questions and answers. Refreshments will be provided. The film and discussion are free and open to the public.

Got children? REY (religious education for youth) is active at Newman! Want to help children and youth know Christ better? See notices, REY

news, curriculum, registration forms, and volunteer opportunities online. Click

on ‘faith formation and education,’ then ‘religious education for youth’ at www.newmanumass.org. Or contact Director of Religious Education, Chris Clark.

A FEW GOOD AMBASSADORS NEEDED The Religious Education (REY) program is still looking for people who have lived or spent time in the following countries: Guatemala, India and Cameroon. The commitment is two 10 minute talks to our youths about being Catholic in that country. Please contact Jo-Ann Konieczny at [email protected] or 413-586-6719.

THE NEWMAN BOOK CLUB Lewis’ Space Trilogy, of which Out of the Silent Planet is the first volume, stands along side Albert Camus’ Plague and George Orwell’s 1984 as a timely parable that has become timeless, beloved as much for the sheer wonder of its storytelling as for the significance of the moral concerns. The central character, the brilliant, clear eyed, and fiercely brave philologist Dr. Elwin Ransom is apparently modeled after Lewis’ dear friend, J.R.R. Tolkien. We meet in the Fr. Quigley Room at 7:30pm on the 1st Wednesday of each month. We’ll meet again on October 3rd. Please remember to order your book from Amazon via our website...Newman receives a small per-centage of the sale!

For couples planning to celebrate the Sacrament of Marriage in the Catholic Church: our pre-cana team offers one-day marriage preparation sessions these Saturdays during this academic year: Oct 16, Nov 17, Jan, 26, Apr 12, May 31. Registration is open; spaces are limited. Couples do not have to be preparing for a wed-ding at Newman. For info or to regis-

ter click on ‘faith formation and education’, then ‘pre-cana’ at www.newmanumass.org or contact Campus Minister Chris Clark.

WHERE DID OUR “NEW MASS” COME FROM? Please join us on Sunday mornings from 9:15 to 10:15 am as we ex-plore the origins of our “New Mass” with extended community member Joanne Talbot. We will be intro-duced to fascinating examples of Old Testament models for the “New Mass” including Jewish prayer and ritual, as well as New Testament

and early Christian sources. Our goal is to obtain a deeper understanding of the gift of the Mass. Meetings will be held in the Quigley Room on six Sundays: September 30, October 7, 21, 28, No-vember 4, 18. For further information, please con-tact Joanne Talbot at [email protected].

EUCHARISTIC MINISTER TRAINING This vital, and extraordinary, ministry is looking for more help! If you have ever considered becoming a Eucharistic Min-ister - either at Mass or visiting the homebound - please contact Mark Cal-

lahan at [email protected] or attend the training in the Chapel on Tuesday, September 25 from 6:30-8:00pm.

ADDITIONAL LECTORS NEEDED

We need additional lectors for all our weekend Masses! New stu-dent lectors, including grad stu-dents, are especially needed for the 4:30pm Saturday and the 10:30am Sunday Masses. There will be a painless orientation session for new readers on Tuesday, September 25 at 7:00pm in the Chapel. Please consider serving your Newman Community in this important and rewarding ministry. Contact Joanne Talbot at [email protected] for more info.
