Welcome and Call to Worship Rev. David W. Johnson *Processional Hymn "Holy, Holy, Holy"

*Litany Lori Ferrell

One: God promises to see us through the darkest valley, the deepest river, the raging forest fire. All: We give thanks for God's deliverance. One: God promises to bring us home, gathering us in from every direction. All: We give thanks for God's redemption. One: At worship we bind ourselves to God and walk together into the future that God has for us. All: We give thanks for God's goodness and mercy that follows us everywhere. One: Let us pray...

*Unison Prayer of Confession Lori Ferrell

Holy God, you have called us by name and gathered us in from all the places to which we have wandered. You have seen us through calamity and tragedy, declaring us precious in your sight. For that we give you thanks and praise. Yet we also confess that we sometimes take your redemption for granted, we sometimes neglect your claim on our lives, we sometimes withhold your love from those we deem to be undeserving. Forgive us and make us new. Redeem us and set us free to sing your praise and serve your people. Amen

Anthem (Sanctuary) "What Then, Will God Do With Me?" John Atteberry

C3 Campers JoAnn W. Palmer, director

Look at these things, these glorious things, that God put on this earth. The fish of the sea and the birds of the sky,

all have a place of worth. A puff of wind makes a wave in the sea. A very small seed makes a very large tree. What then, will God do with me?

Will I help the sick, will I feed the poor, will I tell the world of God's love?

For I can do great things through God, who gives me life, who gives me hope, who fills my heart with joy. A puff of wind makes a wave in the sea.

A very small seed makes a very large tree. What then will God do with me?

Think of these things, these glorious, marvelous, miraculous, astonishing, bewildering, exceptional, fabulous, incredible,

phenomenal, remarkable, staggering, spectacular, wonderful things that God can do with me.

At this time, children grades k-5 may be excused to the Narthex for Sunday School with Miss Erin Porter

Antiphonal Reading of the Psalter Rev. Elizabeth B. Johnson Psalm 23:1-6

Truax

Cantor and Congregation

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. God makes me lie down in green pastures; God leads me beside still waters; God restores my soul. The Lord leads me in right paths for God's name's sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff—they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord my whole life long.

A Reading from the Hebrew Scriptures Rev. David W. Johnson

One: The prophets tell of God's promised redemption. All: We listen for a word of hope.

Isaiah 43: 1-7, 18-21 But now thus says the Lord, God who created you, O Jacob, God who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I give Egypt as your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you. Because you are precious in my sight, and honored, and I love you, I give people in return for you, nations in exchange for your life. Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you; I will say to the to the north, "Give them up," and tot he south, "Do not withhold; bring my sons from far away and my daughters from the end of the earth—everyone who is called by mmy name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made."... Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. The wild animals will honor me, the jackals and the ostriches; for I give water in the wilderness, rivers in the desert, to give drink to my chosen people, the people whom I formed for myself so that they might declare my praise.

Response

One: Watch for the new things that God is doing in our midst. All: We give thanks and praise for all that God has done and will do.

Sermon "Mayday" Rev. Elizabeth B. Johnson "Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine." Isaiah 43:1b

Musical Offering "Do Not Be Afraid"

Phillip Stopford Rachel E. Carter, soprano

Do not be afraid. For I have redeemed you, I have called you by your name. You are mine.

When you walk through the waters I'll be with you.

You will never sink beneath the waves.

When the fire is burning all around you, You will never be consumed by the flames.

When the fear of loneliness is looming, Then remember that I am at your side.

When you dwell in the exile of a stranger, Remember you are precious in my eyes.

You are mine, O my child. I am your father.

And I love you with a perfect love.

Prayer of Thanksgiving Rev. David W. Johnson

The Lord's Prayer (Sung)

Our father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, And the glory forever. Amen

Can You Hear Me Now? Thank you for your feedback in recent weeks regarding sound issues in the sanctuary. After listening to you, working with a consultant, and collaborating with staff, we affirmed that we have an exceptional sound system that works best when you:

1. Notice the location of the overhead speakers. If you sit directly under them, you may experience an echo and the sound will pass over your head. The remedy is to move back a few rows in line with the speaker so the sound is headed directly towards you instead of over you.

2. Use the headsets located in the narthex at the back of the church. This high-end equipment is used at famous museums throughout the world for tours. The sound goes directly into your ear, providing an exceptional listening experience. If your unit isn’t working, tell a Deacon and choose another one. We’ll have that one serviced.

3. Move around, even during worship. Some spots offer better sound than others, depending on the range and pitch best received according to your hearing.

4. Experiment, and then let us know if you’re still having difficulty. We’re committed to creating a meaningful worship experience for you.

Looking Ahead...
