12 OPTIONSWhat you can do yourself (1/4)
1. Paraphrasing: it helps taking distance as you repeat what you have heard and can think meanwhile how to address the matter
2. Share your state of mind or perception: by acknowledging the impact a message has on you, you allow the sender to appreciate the situation and reposition him/herself, possibly explain his/her intention
3. Move from impression to facts: ask for examples, facts, underline generalities which purport false truths

12 OPTIONS What you can ask your counterpart to do (2/4)
4. Sender self-response: ask the sender to respond to his own remark, question or feedback: how would you see it? If I was asking the question, what would be your answer?
5. Sender response on your behalf: ask the sender to place him/herself in your shoes for a moment and explain what s/he would tell him or herself
6. Sender’s objectives: ask the sender what are the needs/intentions/objectives behind the statements/questions/feedback that s/he pursuing in this interaction. State clearly if you are willing or not to accept only frustration ventilation or you are not in a position to take it
7. Sender’s initiative: ask the sender what s/he has personally done about the topic at stake and what s/he would be ready to do/give/renounce for it
