Dedicated to Keeping District 158 Community Members Informed
Our Mission
We will Inspire, Challenge, and
Empower everyone every day.
While many districts in the State of Illinois
are financially struggling, District 158 has
steadily improved its financial position over
the last 5 years. As a result of conservative
budgeting, the District has increased its
fund balance, enabling the District to:
minimize educational service disruptions,
maintain cash on hand to counter
unanticipated cash flow shortfalls, address
emergency situations (particularly those that
threaten health and life safety), and
enhance the
District’s credit
rating which
increases
access to debt
markets at lower
interest rates. As a
result, the District
is financially
healthy as evidenced by the Illinois State
Board of Education’s Financial Profile
Rating. In Fiscal Year 2013, the District’s
Financial Profile Rating was that of
“Financial Recognition”, the highest rating
of financial strength in the State.
While financially healthy, the District’s
operating cost per pupil has been able to
stay relatively flat during a period of time
whereby enrollment is increasing. The
District’s operating cost per pupil,
approximating $8,619 per student in fiscal
year 2013, continues to be the lowest in
McHenry County for all K-12 districts and is
significantly below the State’s 2012 average
cost per pupil of $11,842.
Further enhancing the overall financial
position of the District was the District’s
receipt of a $39.4 million capital grant,
received in August 2012, for construction
Continued on page 3
For the second consecutive year, District 158
is one of 477 school districts in the United
States and Canada to be honored by the
College Board with placement on the Annual
AP District Honor Roll for increasing access to
advance placement (AP) course work while
simultaneously maintaining or increasing the
percentage of students earning scores of 3 or
higher on AP exams. Reaching these goals
indicates that Huntley High School is
successfu l ly ident i fy ing mot ivated,
academically prepared students who are
likely to benefit from rigorous AP course work.
Helping more students learn at a higher level
and earn higher AP scores is an objective of all
members of the AP community from teachers
and school administrators to college
professors. Huntley High School is committed
to expanding the availability of AP courses
among prepared and motivated students of all
backgrounds.
Inclusion on the 4th Annual AP District Honor
Roll is based on the examination of three years
of AP data, from 2011 to 2013, for the following
criteria:
Increased participation/access to AP by at
least 4 percent;
Increased or maintained the percentage of
exams taken by African-American, Hispanic/Latino, and American-Indian/Alaska Native students; and
Improved performance levels when comparing the percentage of students in 2013 scoring a 3 or higher to those in 2011, unless the district has already attained a performance level at which more than 70 percent of its AP students are scoring a 3 or higher.
School District 158 currently offers 17 different AP courses at Huntley High School.
Congratulations to the students and staff on this remarkable achievement!

♥ Helping Hands & Caring Hearts ♥ The Volunteers of District 158
The District would like to thank all of our wonderful volunteers who have continued their
volunteer work all winter and braved the cold and snow to come to the schools and share
their time and talents. Of course being at the schools and helping children certainly
warms everyone’s heart!
Calling all local artists ~ Mackeben Elementary is looking for local artists who would be
willing to showcase and talk about their work with children and families during the
school’s annual Art Show on Thursday, April 24 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Art teacher,
Meghan VanNess thought it would be fun for students to see the work of adults who
make “art” a part of their life, either for pleasure or as a career. Some ideal artists would
include but are not limited to: painting, pottery, sculpting, glasswork, woodwork, jewelry
making, basket weaving, photography, graphic design, architecture and quilting. Please
contact me at [email protected] or at (847) 659-6152 to sign-up or to answer
any questions you have about the event.
Lastly parents, tis the season for Fine Arts events and in the weeks ahead you’ll be
receiving notices about such events as concerts, book fairs and art shows. Please
consider sharing some of your time as a volunteer when it comes time to sign up.
Remember many hands makes for light work for everyone and successful events for our
students and staff.

that was primarily completed in 2005. These grant funds are dedicated to capital projects and
the payment of long term debt, primarily to pay for the high school addition as well as for the
future abatement (reduction) over the previous payment schedule in taxes on the District’s
long-term debt.
The improved financial position has allowed the District to keep property taxes, aside from new
construction, flat the last three years. This year, due to increasing costs, the District is extending
the 2013 Levy, property taxes paid in 2014, with the Consumer Price Index increase of 1.7% in
accordance with State’s Property Tax Extension Limitation law.
The District is currently working on its Fiscal Year 2015 Budget. The first draft of this budget continues the strategic
direction of the District, including funds to cover the continued deployment of the District’s digital transformation (1:1) as
well as the hiring of additional employees, the result of increased enrollment and needs.
Although great things are happening in District 158, the District still relies on 23% of its revenues coming from the State of
Illinois, and therefore we cannot lose sight of potential risks and challenges. Currently, there has been no information from
the State with regard to the State Budget and the related funding of Elementary and Secondary Education. As such, there
continues to be heightened uncertainty surrounding education funding and the related state budget cuts.
As we have done in the past, should the forecasted results begin to slip at any point, the Administration and Board of
Education will modify course and make adjustments that are necessary to meet the overall financial and strategic goals
of the District.
