New Zealand being an island country has a lot of dwellings within a short distance from the sea and onshore salt laden winds. these wind driven salts are very corrosive and extra care needs to be taken to ensure that building components are maintained to give life expectancy. any nails that may be exposed to weather should be protected by painting with a good quality paint and buildings should be washed regularly to remove any salt deposits.

stainless steel has a unique resistance to corrosion and this is what sets stainless apart from other steel.

the reason stainless steel produces corrosion resistance is due to the “passivity”. the steel contains enough chromium and when exposed to oxygen it immediately acquires a protective invisible film (chromium oxide CrO2). under normal conditions this film affords sufficient protection in most applications.

Corrosion of stainless steel Nails can sometimes be initiated by the impact of nail heads with a steel hammer. this surface damage is due to the hammer process and possible iron contamination on the surface of the nail head.

Nail heads should be protected from wind-blow sea salt and washed regularly by rain or maintained in such a way as to remove the deposited salt chlorides.

316 stainless is recommended over 304 due to its superior resistance to corrosion.

GALVANISED & BRIGHT NAILSGalvanised nails are generally used for outdoor applications or where moisture may occur.

Bright Nails should be used for indoor applications only.

STAGGERING NAILSstagger nails where close nailing is neccesary to prevent timber splitting.

DETERMINING NAIL LENGTHthe length of a nail required should be at least three times the thickness of the timber being fixed. eg. 25mm timber = 75mm.

SKEWING NAILSWhenever possible skew nails for maximum joint strength.
