Current Issues Impacting Education

JUNE 2010Missouri adopts Common CORE State Standards

JUNE 2011Missouri launches Top 10 by 20. This initiative pushes for greater accountability

in public schools to increase student achievement.

MAY 2012Missouri HB 1526 passes by two votes. This allows districts to look at teacher

performance over tenure when faced with RIF (reduction in force). Special training and certification will also be considered. The bill moved on to the Senate,

placed on the informal calendar May 18, 2012.

JUNE 2012Missouri is granted waiver for No Child Left Behind freeing the state from the requirement of students being proficient in math and science by 2014. The 24 states granted waivers to date in turn must develop accountability plans for

increasing achievement.

JANUARY 2013SB 210 is introduced to Missouri Senate. This bill would remove Missouri from

Common Core implementation based on the belief that Common Core is a push for National Education.

Common Core 101 June 25, 2010 Missouri adopts the Common Core State Standards joining 44 states and 3

territories. (Now 45 states, 4 territories and DC)

http://www.corestandards.org/in-the-states

Coordinated by the National Governor’s Association for Best Practices and the Council of Chief State School Officers and developed in collaboration with teachers, administrators and

experts across the nation.

Focuses on preparing students for college-level and career ready lifestyles by stair-casing learning objectives and standards in language arts (reading and writing) and math.

Similar to Missouri’s GLEs already in place and just as with the GLEs are NOT intended to be a curriculum but standards used to create curriculum….Missouri now refers to Common Core

as Missouri Core Academic Standards

The Federal Government had NOTHING to do with the implementation of these standards so it is NOT a push for Nationalized Education. (SB210 & HB616: http://www.mcsa.org/reference )

At this time, the focus through the initiative remains with the implementation of English Language Arts & Math however other groups are working to develop standards in other areas.

5 Components of Reading…How Does It Tie?

PHONEMIC AWARENESS—The knowledge and manipulation of sounds in spoken words.

PHONICS—The relationship between written and spoken letters and sounds.

READING FLUENCY – The ability to read with accuracy, and with appropriate rate, expression, and phrasing.

Replace ‘text’ with ‘musical selection’…

Example: Grade 8:Cite the evidence that most strongly supports an analysis of what the musical selection says as well as inferences drawn from the selection…
