I am pleased to announce we will be adding another fun activity to the Club that should make some of our ex-sailors (now power boaters) very happy. Charlotte Harbor Youth Sailing has added two Flying Scots to their fleet to be used for sailing classes. These two boats will also be available to CHYC members to sail when not being used for classes. Club members interested will be
certified by CHYS to sail a Flying Scot and to operate the boat lift. Once certified, a member will be able be schedule the use of a boat. Final details are currently being put
together including the fee structure for certification and use of the boats. Members interested in learning to sail will also be accommodated in the program. This should all be finalized in the near future at which time we will hold a meeting to explain how the program will work. The Nominating Committee is hard at work with the slate of candidates for open positions to be approved by the membership at the Annual Meeting in December. If you have an interest in serving as a member of the Board, please contact any of the Committee Members or submit your resume to the Committee. We are planning to hold a TOWNHALL MEETING November 3. The purpose of this meeting is to share information and get your input into the future direction of the Club. Please bring ideas, suggestions and any questions that you might have. We will present and discuss the tentative plans for 2015 including our financial outlook. Continued on page 2

We need all our members to fill in these sections on the comment cards.
We are looking into a way of making our ice cream area a new coffee specialty station, by moving the cappuccino machine to this area, adding a shelf and dressing it up.

Greetings from the Deck !
This is my favorite time of year! It is the time of year when the weather starts to cool down and you can actually catch a "slight" breeze. It is also the time of year when our northern friends start returning to the Club. If you are one of those members who has arrived in Florida, or you are returning, we’ll look forward to seeing you in the Ships Wheel to share a glass of wine, great conversation and a few laughs. Though is it fall season, my committee has not fallen back on their completion of planned tasks. We have already started to tackle the most urgent jobs, or ongoing works in progress. Some of these tasks will need the help of additional workers during the next month. I will keep the members informed via email when help is required.
Please mark your calendars for one of our premier events of the year, The Commodore’s Ball. The Commodore's Ball will honor the current Commodore, Bill Barnett. as his term comes to an end. This event will be held on Saturday, November 15. Please read the poster for details. The Poster is located on the event board in the lobby, in the Depth Sounder, on our website and via weekly email blast.
If you are a new member, we welcome you. We also encourage you to attend our functions and attend Friday Pub Nite where we gather with friends and look forward to meeting new friends.
DEE JACOBSEN, Rear Commodore

MANAGER'S COLUMN

The September 10 Wednesday night Harbormasters dinner hosted by the Charlotte County Youth Sailing had 106 members in attendance. A good time was had by all. Harbormasters had a tour of the Sun-Herald Newspaper facility on the 18th of September. If you have never toured a daily newspaper facility and observed the inter working of what it takes to go to press, you missed a great opportunity. Our next meeting will be on October 16 at 11 a.m. Join us for fellowship by making a reservation with Joy at 639-5131. Remember all CHYC male members are members of Harbormasters. It’s your Club and all Harbormasters proceeds go to maintaining the Grounds and Marina areas of the Club. This year’s Bazaar is scheduled for November 18. Please donate your excess nautical items and tools for this event. Call 833-3111 for delivery and storage.
Our last Wednesday night dinner was held on the 17th of September , hosted by the Fishing Club—a great menu with great friends. TONY GEISER,
President
Fall is upon us and the holidays are around the corner. We are starting to see some of our snowbirds returning from the north and what a welcome sight they are.
The Front of the House staff is working hard hiring and training new staff for the season. Please take the time to welcome them to the CHYC Family.
In the Back of the House I have challenged our talented culinary team to come up with new menu
ideas for both lunch and dinner. These changes will be in effect by November 1. Remember, every Friday the left side of the dinner menu always has at least three specials.
By the time this article comes out we will have had our Open House for new memberships and plan on being successful. Please, if you see a new face, introduce yourself and welcome them to the CHYC Family.
October plans on being a busy month with the popular Oktoberfest on the 15th, the Blessing of the Fleet on the 18th and Halloween Spooktacular on the 31st. Call Joy for your reservations. See you at the Club!

Blessing of the Fleet and Memorial for Deceased Members
The tradition of blessing the fleet began centuries ago in Portugal where villages sought divine intervention at the beginning of the fishing season, both for a good harvest and for the protection from the dangers of the sea. The blessing was performed by the local priest or bishop following a mass in the parish church and procession to the waterfront where the boats were docked. By the early part of the twentieth century, the custom had spread throughout the world. We will hold Charlotte Harbor Yacht Club’s Blessing of the Fleet and Memorial for Deceased Members Saturday, October 18 at 11 a.m. Lunch will be served following the ceremony. Please call 941-629-5131 and make reservations for lunch. We encourage all members to come out and be a part of this once a year, moving and traditional ceremony. You are welcome to bring flowers to place in the Yacht Club Basin in remembrance of a loved one or friend that has passed away. The appropriate time for placing the flowers in the basin will be announced during the ceremony.
CHYC Chapter of Florida Commodores Association.BOB BARBER, President
Fall is here and instead of watching the leaves change as our friends and family are doing up North, we will be watching license plates change as our population increases for the upcoming season. Welcome back to our returning "snowbirds". We missed you and are glad you're back. There are a lot of events planned for the season so keep an eye on the Club Calendar, you don't want to miss any of the fun afternoons and evenings ahead. The Harbor Lites Fall Fashion Show is Tuesday, October 28—tell all your friends, put together a table and come and enjoy the afternoon. Fashions will be provided by Anthony's of Punta Gorda and lunch will be a Far East Salad with grilled chicken breast and for dessert, white chocolate mousse. After the parade of fashions and
lunch, anyone who would like to stay and partake in an afternoon of Mah Jongg, Canasta, Bridge or any other game you and your friends like may do so. Tickets are $25.00 and are now on sale; see 1st Vice President Judy Fiedler for yours. Don't forget we will be having our Annual Bazaar on Tuesday, November 18, so mark your calendars for a day of "treasure hunting". We will have books, CD's, jewelry and household items for you to browse through and hopefully find some items that catch your eye. There will also be fresh baked goodies available for you enjoy while you browse or to take home to enjoy later. And ladies...don't leave your husbands at home. Harbor Masters will also have a booth that day with boating items, tools and electronics. Remember, if you come across any gently used items you no longer need, consider donating them to Harbor Lites for the Bazaar. Please call Judy Fiedler and let her know you have items available. Everything is greatly appreciated. Our October 7 meeting will feature Jeweler Al Morgan of Punta Gorda. Many of you may know him and I am sure his presentation is one you will not want to miss. New members—please consider joining us; all female members of CHYC are automatically members of Harbor Lites and we look forward to your joining us at our monthly meeting. Enjoy a complimentary lunch your first meeting as you become acquainted with other members. Harbor Lites meetings are the first Tuesday of the month. We begin with a social hour at 9:30 a.m. (a great time to check out the new items in the Ship's Store) followed by a short business meeting at 10:30 a.m. Lunch is served following the meeting and then if you wish, stay for an afternoon of Bridge or Mah Jongg. I hope you will join us. Please call Joy with your reservation and meal selection and if you are a new member let Joy know this is your first meeting. Remember, if you are unable to eat either of the menu items you may order something else. The menu for October is: COLD: Chef's Salad HOT: Stir Fry Chicken over Rice DESSERT : Peach Cobbler
Looking forward to seeing you at our next meeting.JANET GAROFOLI, President

The Kitchen House
by. . . . . Kathleen
Grissom In this gripping New York Times bestseller, Kathleen Grissom brings to life a thriving plantation in Virginia in the decades before the Civil War, where a dark secret threatens to expose the best and worst in everyone tied to the estate. Orphaned while onboard ship from Ireland, seven-year-old Lavinia arrives on the steps of a tobacco plantation where she is to live and work with the slaves of the kitchen house as an indentured servant. Under the care of Belle, the master's illegitimate daughter, Lavinia becomes deeply bonded to her adopted family, though she is set apart from them by her white skin. In time, Lavinia is accepted into the world of the big house, caring for the master’s opium-addicted wife and befriending his dangerous yet protective son. She attempts to straddle the worlds of the kitchen and big house, but her skin color will forever set her apart from Belle and the other slaves. Through the unique eyes of Lavinia and Belle, Grissom’s debut novel unfolds in a heartbreaking and ultimately hopeful story of class, race, dignity, deep-buried secrets, and familial bonds. Join us for a lively discussion and then stay for lunch. All are welcome– new friends and long time members. Come - even if you have not read the book. For more information, contact Maryann Vickers at [email protected]
CHYC LADIES 9 HOLERS GOLF LEAGUE
CHYC is looking to form a Ladies 9 Holers golf group. This is a bunch of women who enjoy getting out on the course, despite their lack of skill, but are hesitant. If that is how YOU feel, then this is the group for you!
Janice Creutzmann will head up the group. Her handicap is as high as is allowed. Oftentimes she picks up the ball and goes to the next hole. She has also been known to throw the ball, rather than use her club. Many of the women she plays with do not even keep score. Following the game, all participants will share their golfing stories over lunch.
Each week a different course will be chosen. Most times they will be executive courses with few, if any, par 4s or 5s. We will play on Monday mornings, but not at the crack of dawn.
If you are interested in joining a fun group of women who appreciate being outside on beautiful golf courses (and grumbling under their breath) please contact Janice.
