Helping our world work betterOver 12,000 ASTM standards operate globally. Defined and set by us, they improve the lives of millions every day.

Combined with our innovative business services, they enhance performance and help everyone have confidence in the things they buy and use – from the toy in a child’s hand to the aircraft overhead.

Working across borders, disciplines, and industries we harness the expertise of over 30,000 members to create consensus and improve performance in manufacturing and materials, products and processes, systems and services.

Understanding commercial needs and consumer priorities, we touch every part of everyday life: helping our world work better.

StandardsCommittee F42 has developed 11 international standards that cover several areas of the industry. An additional 20+ draft standards in development address mechanical properties for AM materials, support interlaboratory collaboration, enhance 3D printing and more.

ͽ F2915 Standard Specification for Additive Manufacturing File Format (AMF)

ͽ F2924 Standard Specification for Additive Manufacturing Titanium-6 Aluminum-4 Vanadium with Powder Bed Fusion

ͽ F2971 Standard Practice for Reporting Data for Test Specimens Prepared by Additive Manufacturing

ͽ F3049 Standard Guide for Characterizing Properties of Metal Powders Used for Additive Manufacturing

ͽ F3091 Standard Specification for Powder Bed Fusion of Plastic Materials

ͽ F3122 Standard Guide for Evaluating Mechanical Properties of Metal Materials Made via Additive Manufacturing Processes

Partnering for International ApplicationFrom its start, Committee F42 has committed to partnering with other organizations to avoid duplication of efforts and promote the wider adoption of additive manufacturing through standards.

Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) ASTM and SME first signed a memorandum of understanding in 2009, establishing ASTM as the home for AM standards activities. The agreement also facilitates the participation of SME’s Rapid Technologies and Additive Manufacturing (RTAM) community in the standards development process. SME’s RTAM group is the world’s largest community of technical experts focused around these advanced technologies.

International Organization for Standardization (ISO)A Partner Standards Developing Organization cooperative agreement was signed with ISO in 2011. The agreement governs the ongoing collaborative efforts between Committee F42 and ISO Technical Committee 261 on Additive Manufacturing, eliminating duplication of efforts. Results of this partnership include the joint ISO/ASTM 52900, Standard Terminology for Additive Manufacturing Technologies; ISO/ASTM 52921, Standard Terminology for Additive Manufacturing Coordinate Systems and Test Methodologies; and ISO/ASTM52915, Standard Specification for Additive Manufacturing File Format (AMF) Version 1.1.

America MakesAn MOU with America Makes, formerly the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute, was signed in 2013. American Makes is managed by the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining, which works toward creating manufacturing solutions that enhance existing and future defense systems. This MOU outlines a framework of cooperation between ASTM and NAMII for the development of AM standards.

Supporting a Fast Growing Industry

Additive manufacturing (AM) technologies and processes help improve the design, test and manufacture of new products, resulting in quicker time-to-market and lower cost. The use of AM technologies continues to increase, benefiting sectors such as aerospace, automotive, biotechnology/medical and consumer products.

Formed in 2009 at the request of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers’ Rapid Technologies and Additive Manufacturing Steering Committee, Committee F42 develops international standards for the fast-growing additive manufacturing industry. With 350+ members from 22 countries, the committee addresses the standards needs of the AM industry through eight subcommittees:

ͽ F42.01 Test Methods

ͽ F42.04 Design

ͽ F42.05 Materials and Processes

ͽ F42.06 Environment, Health and Safety

ͽ F42.90 Executive

ͽ F42.91 Terminology

ͽ F42.94 Strategic Planning

ͽ F42.95 US TAG to ISO TC 261

“ Additive manufacturing needs to have an appropriate body of standards so that engineers can do their designs using materials with properties that the standards community has embraced.”

Edward MorrisDirector of America Makes

Allow manufacturers to better compare and contrast the performance of different processes

Improve the purchaser/supplier relationship by accurately specifying parts requirements

Help new adopters appropriately use and implement AM technologies

Enable researchers and process developers to provide repeatable results that can be independently verified
