• Medical cost continues to increase moderately: 2013 – up by 3%, 2012 – up 3%, 2011 – up 2.6%

Abuse of Opioids• ZOHYDRO – THE NEW OXYCONTIN?
• Powerful new painkiller (opioid) approved last fall by FDA against the recommendation of an FDA advisory committee
• Hit the market in March 2014• Contains hydrocodone which is second only to OxyContin in abuse.
Zohydro has 5 times the hydrocodone previously available in pill form.• Twenty eight (28) attorneys general signed a letter asking the FDA to
revoke the drug’s approval or require the manufacturer to reformulate the drug to make it harder to crush.
• Vermont Governor issued emergency order making it harder for physicians to prescribe.
• Massachusetts Governor ordered an outright ban on prescribing and dispensing Zohydro until it is marketed in a form that is difficult to abuse.• Drug company filed federal lawsuit to block ban
