A.S. Watson Group has always been committed to giving back to the community. We launched the Project LOL philanthropy programme in late 2015 to assist those in need through three main areas of service – Health, Education and Caring Community. Since 2016, we have sponsored “Future Stars – Upward Mobility Scholarships” through Project LOL to encourage students who demonstrate resilience in adversity and help them take their first stride towards success.

We are very pleased to know that not only does “Upward Mobility Scholarship” provide financial assistance to students, it enables them to feel the care and warmth from the community, and encourages them to work hard to become future pillars of the society and help those in need. We see from the scholarship scheme how love can be passed from one to another, which encourages us to continue with the spirit of Project LOL to bring “Lots of Love” and “Lots of Laughs” to the people of Hong Kong.

We hope that our students will continue to strive forward, make contribution to the society in the future, and spread love and positive spirit within our community.

You will never realise your strengths and weaknesses without knowing your competitors well. Being a student newly arrived from the Mainland of China, I am weak in English reading, writing, speaking and listening. It became evident to me the vast distance I had with other students in my English level during my tutorial classes, but this also spurred my fighting spirit. The teachers at the tutorial school taught at a fast pace, and what was taught was more difficult than what I learnt at school. I needed to spend a lot of time on their materials and on drilling myself in an attempt to finish their mock papers with accuracy within the prescribed time.

In addition to preparing myself for examinations, I also incorporated more English into my daily life. I read the South China Morning Post daily, which strengthened my knowledge in current affairs. Not only did I read the papers, I also read them out loud, which boost my confidence in spoken English step by step. I started to proactively communicate with foreign teachers both at school and at the tutorial school. My foreign teachers considered that I had improved remarkably in my English.

Last but not least, I would like to express my gratitude towards the organiser of “Future Stars – Upward Mobility Scholarship”. Not only does the scholarship support me financially, it also reminds me to continually seek improvement and be brave enough to realise my shortcomings. The scholarship brought me the opportunity of more in-depth English learning, but what I gained was far more than progress in English learning itself. When I first attended tutorial classes, I felt inferior when compared with other students, but I told myself not to give up easily and I eventually achieved some improvement. When I was reading the news, I also noted certain inequality in society and made me realise how lucky I was to be supported with this scholarship. I very much hope that I will be able to help the disadvantaged in the future. I am Wong Ching Yee of St. Teresa Secondary School and one of the awardees of “Future Stars – Upward Mobility Scholarship”. I am most grateful for the sponsorship of CLP Power Hong Kong Limited, which serves as a strong driving force behind my dreams.

My aspiration is to become an environmental engineer to protect and improve the environment. With the air pollution in Hong Kong, I have been suffering from nasal allergy since I was small. I have been thinking of ways to reduce air pollutants, most of which can be attributed to vehicle emissions. I surfed the web and found that particulate matters in the air can be eliminated by methods such as filtration, gravity and electrode attraction, which leads me to the idea of developing a solar electrostatic precipitator that may be installed along the roadside. I have not had much spare resources to pursue my goal until I got this scholarship. With the sponsorship from CLP Power, I bought some reference books and materials on environmental protection and programming. I am now teaching myself programming, and manage to write a computer programme to make LED lights light up systematically with the Arduino software. It may sound like baby steps, but surely is an important step towards my dream of developing a precipitator and becoming an environmental engineer.

We hope that they would live their dreams with courage and determination, and over-come challenges along the way!

Over the past few decades, Henderson Land has grown together with Hong Kong. We care about and invest in our community, targeting issues such as poverty relief and youth development, working in close partnerships with our staff, community groups and the Government to create positive changes and foster a caring culture in society.

My favourite subject in school is science, especially biology. Therefore, being a doctor has always been my dream job. This dream is definitely achievable if I keep investing the same amount of effort I pay currently. Here, I would like to talk about another dream.

When I was a little boy, I used to learn playing the piano, but it was ended due to some financial problems in my family. I love playing the piano very much and so this decision has been my greatest regret of all time. I always wonder if there would be any chances of me dancing my fingers on the piano once more. And by a coincidence, I heard about the Upward Mobility Scholarship from one of my teachers. Here, I would like to obtain the scholarship, so that I could have a second chance to pick up the piano again.

For me, having the skills of playing the piano makes things more diverse. As the chairman of the Community Youth Club in school, I could organize activities related to music, which we have never done before, to the target group that we serve. For the underprivileged kids, we could introduce to them different instruments which they never had a chance to know about. For the elderly, we could organize a concert with songs from the last century. As a playwright in our school’s drama team, I could help writing a musical, in which songs and lyrics are all created by us. Of course, I am currently capable in neither composing nor performing, but I believe, with my effort and enthusiasm, the above goals could be achieved before I graduate from school.

I believe that setting goals for our future can motivate and lead us onto the right path. Living in the millennial era where there are chaos in nearly every corner of the world, human rights and equality are being neglected, people become more defensive towards themselves, and peace therefore diminishes.

As a world citizen that keeps herself updated with news reports around the world, I strongly feel responsible to maintain a balance between all, and to strive for world peace, therefore working in the humanitarian division of the United Nations became my number one life goal. I understand that it is an ambitious wish, but I do try my best to turn it into a plan. In this society, the ability to cooperate and negotiate are the major concerns, and I enrich myself with various experiences to prepare for this goal. I have worked with the choir to create music and harmony, the Junior Police Call to uphold justice and promote the values of a responsible citizen. I am confident that I am walking on the right path to achieve this goal, what I need more is persistence and a constant reminder to challenge myself.

I understand that I do not come from a family or environment that provides me with the best resources to assist me in this goal, but I am very thankful for their support as they educate me with the right attitudes. Although resources are limited, I will continue to enrich myself in understanding humanitarian issues, and take part in community service to enhance my mentality to make myself fit for my future.

With this scholarship, I can pay for tutorial classes without having to take on part-time jobs, which enables me to spend more time on my studies.

If I manage to get into university, I will be the first one in my family, and I hope this will make my parents proud. The sponsorship from the Henderson Land Group gives me much encouragement and actual support. I am now more confident with my DSE exams, and hope that I can get satisfactory grades.

In the past year, I worked part-time in a fast food shop for eight hours once a week to lessen my family’s burden, which inevitably reduced my study and rest time. Although I still managed to improve in my academic performance in the second term, this brought me a lot of stress and negatively impacted on my efficiency and well-being. I believe that things will now turn for the better with this scholarship.

I feel really honoured to be awarded the “Upward Mobility Scholarship”, which serves as an affirmation and encouragement of the hard work I have put in over the past few years, and helps me pursue my dreams. I am a Malaysian Chinese, born and raised in Malaysia. After my mother passed away of illness when I was in Secondary 3, I came to Hong Kong with my father, living in a small squatter hut in Yuen Long. I enrolled into Bethel High School for my Secondary 4 studies. Mr. Wong, our Maths teacher and teacher-in-charge of Junior Police Call, became aware of my situation and took care of me. He invited me to join JPC. I did, and a new chapter of my life begins.

In the various activities at JPC, I developed my organisation skills, a sense of responsibility and care for the society. I also represented my school and the JPC Yuen Long in a number of major competitions. I hope to be able to see more of the world, work hard to get into university, and become a responsible and caring police officer when I graduate from college.

Our family is not well off and my father works very long hours. I study very hard as I know that knowledge can change our destiny. At present, the Chinese subject is my greatest obstacle, but I receive a lot of help from Mr. Wong who helps me with Chinese and Mathematics. To repay my teachers’ kindness, I will strive hard to get good results in my DSE, get into college, serve the community as a police officer and become a pillar of society.

I was not born with a silver spoon in my mouth. My family receives the Comprehensive Social Security Assistance due to the poor health of my parents. My father is now in his senior years and can no longer work. As the only child in the family, I am their only hope to change for the better. I am working extremely hard for the DSE exams this year. I hope to be able to get into health care related studies in university to pursue my ambition as a medical professional. I hope to serve the community and help those who suffer like my parents. If I were to be awarded the scholarship, I will first buy my parents a nice meal to thank them for raising me, and get some reference books to better equip myself.

When I was in Primary 2, my father passed away due to illness. Since then, my mother raised me and my younger sister, bore financial hardships and took care of everything all by herself.

As my mother works long hours, I have learned to cook, do household chores and take care of my baby sister since I was at a young age. No matter how hard the times were, we managed to go through them by sticking together as a family.

I was not sound in my basic learning when I was in junior primary school, and my mother suggested that I repeated Primary 4 for a stronger foundation in my studies. I was at first reluctant, but I remembered what my father used to say to me, “As long as you have your dream, pursue it and don’t give up easily.” In the end, I repeated Primary 4 for a stronger foundation in pursuit of my dream job as a teacher.

I had always wanted to enrol in tutorial classes, but my mother is the sole bread winner in the family which makes them unaffordable. I can only depend on myself in my studies. I believe that by hard work and determination, I will be able to fulfil my dreams.

The Glorious Sun Group cares very much about youth development.
