    The 19th edition o the Commonwealth Games is scheduled to be heldin Delhi, India between 3rd and 14th October 2010. The games willbe the largest multi-sport event conducted to date in Delhi and Indiagenerally, which has previously hosted the Asian Games in 1951 and1982. With 10 Venues hosting 17 sporting events the Common WealthGames is truly going to be a sporting spectacle o immense proportions.

    The stadium is a ring shaped architecture with two parallel runningnetworks. The irst network being the Games Data Network (GDN)which will handle the applications which include the entire InternetProtocol (IP) network and telephony provisions, advertising screensaround the stadium, scoring, attendance, media broadcasting, ticketing

    systems, stand management.The second network is a Security Data Network (SDN) which will link IPbased cameras or 24x7 complete stadium coverage with the eedsgoing to the Delhi Police Control Center to ensure maximum saety andsecurity at the games.

    The Challenge

    With the background and history o this eventand the need to relay all games and events to theentire world, the most critical challenge is to havea high-speed and bandwidth connectivity systemthat is 24/7 real-time with a reliable network.The CWG management was looking at a 100%uptime and error-ree network connectivitysolution or all the sports, training venues alongwith the games village (where thousands oathletes would be residing).

    The second challenge was to Design a networkthat would provide virtually 100% uptime and NOnetwork ailure that could hamper the critical realtime applications. It also required a convergenceo voice, data and video over a robust, reliableand eicient structured cabling backbone.The demand was clear! - When the cablingsystem work is completed the operators MUST

    have a stadium with a 24/7 Real-time, Reliableconnectivity system.

    The third challenge was to complete thedesign, installation and testing o the entiresolution within a short timeline which includedcoordinating with the various stake holdersinvolved in this government project. To integrateall these needs and deliver would require anexpert network inrastructure provider

    The ADC Solution

    ADC won the contract ater extensive study,design proposals and a solution mix o Copper& Fibre cable and connectivity products. ADCimplemented a network or more than 7000nodes in the sporting venues: Thyagaraj SportsComplex, Indira Gandhi Sports Complex, Dr. S.P.Mukherjee Swimming Stadium, Talkatora Indoor

    Stadium, Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium,Siri Fort Sports Complex and Yamuna SportsComplex.

    ADC irst conducted a thorough site survey or allthe venues and designed a network that wouldaccommodate the bandwidth requirements othe intended applications. For the Games Data

    Network (GDN), the LAN is networked usingCat6 Cables or connectivity and Fibre or theBackbone cabling. In the Security Data Network(SDN),which has an IP based security camera atevery 100m interval, to cover every corner o thestadium, a ibre end to end connectivity solutionwas implemented.

    A structured cabling system was designed orthese multi-story structures in order to realizeideal connectivity and communication betweenall the services locations (including advertisingscreens around the stadium, scoring, attendance,media broadcasting, ticketing systems, stand

    management). The system installed wasCategory 6 Copper horizontal cabling and FibreConnectivity or the backbone cabling.

    In all, more than 7000 nodes with over 200km oFibre Cable and 350 km o Cat6 Copper Cablinghas been deployed. ADCs innovative modularjacks (RJ45) are installed at the telecommunicationoutlets, along with ADCs patch panels and patchcords.

    Conclusion

    ADC managed to successully complete thedesign, coordination, delivery, installation,integration and testing as per schedule and tothe customers satisaction. On time delivery andcoordinating with various government agenciesor completion o the installation was a keyachievement. With the cabling installation letuntil the inal stages o the project, the entireinstallation rom conceptual design to inalhandover was done in 7 weeks.
