S U M M A R Y
I . Project Title
Commercialization of Radiation Tolerant Camera
II. Objectives and Necessities of the Project
In radiation environments, the personnel exposure should be reduced as low
as reasonably achievable. The best method of reducing personnel exposure is
separation of radiation environments and workers like remote handling tasks. In
the remote working, visual information is a major role to perform that kind of
works. The CCTV system, composed of camera and monitor, is a general
instrument to acquire an visual information. The camera using CCD image
sensor is generally used. But CCD sensors are weakened by radiation, CCD
sensors are limited to 104 rad total dose. So, radiation tolerant cameras are
needed to use radiation environments. Currently, radiation tolerant camera is
imported from foreign countries, and the technology of radiation tolerant cameras
were not developed by domestic researcher yet. Then, the price of radiation
tolerant camera is very expensive and the maintenance of the cameras could not
performed by our techniques. The technology of radiation tolerant camera that is
developed has many benefit. If we set the techniques and product of radiation
tolerant cameras, the price will be downed and the maintenance of the camera

will be easy. And we will join the world market of radiation tolerant cameras
with lower price than any other products.
DI. Scope and Contents of the Project
The works in radiation environment is aided by remote inspection system.
However, the commercial CCD camera is not useful to inspect because of its
weakness by radiation exposure. In order to view the condition of working area
clearly, radiation tolerant camera system must be used.
In this project, radiation tolerant camera which tolerates 106~108 rad total
dose is developed. In order to develope radiation tolerant camera, radiation effect
of camera components was examined and evaluated, and camera configuration
was studied. By the result of evaluation, the components were decided and
design was performed. Vidicon tube was selected to use by image sensor and
non-browning optics and camera driving circuit were applied. The controller
needed for CCTV camera system, lens, light, pan/tilt controller, was designed by
the concept of remote control. And two types of radiation tolerant camera were
fabricated consider to use in underwater environment or normal environment.
IV. Results of the Project
In this project, we developed radiation tolerant camera system that tolerated
10 —10 rad total dose for commercialization. Radiation characteristics of camera

evaluated and the electric circuits of the camera and the auxiliary devices, such
as lens, light, pan/tilt controller, were designed considering of remote control in
radiation environment. We developed two types of radiation tolerant cameras,
one is for underwater, the other is for normal environment.
V. Utilization of the Project Results
Currently, radiation tolerant camera is used in lots of application in nuclear
industry, such as reactor inspection, spent fuel inspection, RI facilities, etc. And
all of them are imported from foreign countries. The price of commercial
radiation tolerant cameras are high. The use of the camera was limited and the
maintenance of the system is not easy, because we had not related technology.
Developed techniques and products from this project will be applied to nuclear
industry, medical part and space. The developed radiation tolerant camera has
lower price than other commercial foreign products. By the increasement of
nuclear power plant in Asia including China, the need for radiation tolerant
camera may be increased. Also, the developed techniques will be used in space
and medical application. By using radiation tolerant camera, the safety and
certainty is increased in radiation industry.

In this project, radiation tolerant camera which tolerates 106~10° radtotal dose is developed. In order to develope radiation tolerant camera,radiation effect of camera components was examined and evaluated, andcamera configuration was studied. By the result of evaluation, thecomponents were decided and design was performed. Vidicon tube wasselected to use by image sensor and non-browning optics and cameradriving circuit were applied. The controller needed for CCTV camerasystem, lens, light, pan/tilt controller, was designed by the concept ofremote control. And two types of radiation tolerant camera were fabricatedconsider to use in underwater environment or normal environment.
