OVERVIEWThe new 2008 Ford F-Series Super Duty reinforces the “Built Ford Tough” image of the F-Series andexpands its availability to meet the needs of a multitude of commercial vocations, as well as personaluse towing customers with the addition of a new F-450 DRW Crew Cab pickup. Ford F-Series SuperDuty combines the attributes of power, capability, breadth and depth of product choices with newcustomer features to drive the changes for 2008.

To use thestep, simply drop the tailgate into the downposition, grab the bottom step, pull it straightout from the tailgate and drop it down into thestep position – all in one easy motion. The 16.7by 4.5-inch flip-down step pad makes it easy tostep up into or down out of the bed to load orunload cargo. Tailgate Assist™ is included onall pickup tailgates.

the previous 6.0L diesel engine. It includes a135 Amp heavy duty alternator.

• Cabs may require removal to allow R&R of thediesel engine. Wire harnesses and other after-market modifications should be designed so thecab can be removed for engine removal andinstallation.

Cooling System• Cooling system for the diesel engine uses a

new 26-inch diameter fan, and is designed foroptimum heat rejection to aid in meeting emis-sions standards.

• The engine cooling module can be removedwithout disconnecting the hoses to the auxiliarytransmission oil cooler or the air conditionercondenser.

• Charge Air Cooler (CAC) is mounted to the frontof the module. Other components attached tothe cooling module include: Auxiliary transmis-sion oil cooler, air conditioner condenser, powersteering cooler, low temperature heat exchang-er for fuel cooling and engine radiator.

• The radiator for the 6.4L diesel engine is signifi-cantly larger. There is no appreciable change inthe size of the gasoline engine radiator.

• Quick connects replace conventional hoseclamps for improved serviceability and betterleak prevention.

• New diesel emissions requirements for CY 2007and beyond require the use of a DieselParticulate Filter (DPF). The 6.4L Super Dutyuses a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC), whichmates with the DPF to meet new emissionsstandards. The resonator/tailpipe assembly hasa functional twin tip diffuser which should not bemodified. It works in conjunction with theDPF/DOC assembly to reduce outlet exhaustgas temperature.

Frame• All frames are E-Coated and have a hard, shiny

black appearance. This results in a thinner coat-ing than the previous hot wax dipped frame butwith improved corrosion protection.

• E-Coat is much cleaner to work with comparedto hot wax dipped.

• New Drop Front Frame Horn eliminates theneed for a Blocker Beam®.

• All six body and front end sheet metal bolts withnew tuning are accessible from under the frameresulting in improved serviceability of cab andfront end sheet metal, and improved isolation ofcab from transmitted road noise.

• Bolts engage “caged” nuts, which are a part ofthe cab structure beneath the floor pan, therebysimplifying body service.

incorporate a 2-piece weldment rear suspensionbracket at the front end of the spring forincreased stiffness.

• The #6 crossmember of all F-250 through F-450pickup models is a 2-piece weldment. It issecurely attached to the frame rails by welding.This provides exceptionable stability at the rearof the frame. Welding to the frame is lighterweight than riveting or bolting.

• The #6 crossmember of all Chassis Cab modelsis riveted to the frame rail to provide ease ofmodification requiring relocation of the cross-member (e.g., wrecker body installation). Themounting holes for relocating the crossmemberwill be provided post Job #1.

• Every F-250 through F-450 pickup model has aStandard trailer hitch and 7/4 way trailer towconnector. They have the following capacities:

- 12.5K with F-250 and F-350 Super Dutypickup with SRW

Frame (continued)• A lug wrench and new 3-piece jack handle

extension tool is packaged in a handy storagebag behind the driver’s seat or underneath therear seat for SuperCabs and Crew Cabs. A 2-piece jack handle extension was supplied inprevious years.

Fuel - Diesel Engine• The 6.4L diesel engine is approved for use with

up to 5% bio-diesel fuel.

• An independent active fuel cooling system isused with the 6.4L Power Stroke® engine tohelp maintain fuel density to the injectors andprovide fuel pump lubrication. Fuel cooling isrequired due to the engine’s new High PressureCommon Rail (HPCR) fuel supply system.

• An electric pump circulates coolant through thewater-to-fuel cooler. The coolant is cooled bypassing through an independent front mountedradiator. The Engine Control Module (ECM)causes the pump to operate when the fuel tem-perature exceeds a preset limit.

• The vehicle must not be operated without aproperly functioning fuel cooling system.

• The fuel lines for 2008 are larger than in prioryears.

• The Horizontal Fuel Conditioning Module(HFCM) is new for 2008. It operates at a differ-ent pressure level and flow rate, and is notcompatible with prior year fuel systems.

• The HFCM is mounted in the same location asprior models; inside the frame rail and approxi-mately under the driver’s seat.

• The HFCM has a larger water reservoir that canbe drained by moving a ‘flip’ lever. It has theadditional advantage of extended filter serviceintervals; increased from 15,000 to 20,000miles. Both the engine mounted fuel filter andthe filter in the HFCM must be changed at thesame time.

Fuel – Gasoline Engines• A new, smaller, more efficient Fuel Evaporation

Canister (FEC) is being used on 2008 gasolineengine pickups.

• The FEC is reduced in size from 4.5L to 3.9L. It incorporates high efficiency carbon and adedicated purge line.

• The FEC continues to be mounted next to thespare tire.

Fuel - Tank Capacities• The available fuel capacities are:

- 30.5 gallon mid-ship fuel tank with shortpickup boxes, F-250 and F-350.

- 38 gallon mid-ship fuel tank with long pick-up boxes, F-250, F-350 and F-450.

- Optional 19 gallon mid-ship fuel tank withall DRW Chassis Cab models.

- 40 gallon aft-of-axle fuel tank with allChassis Cab models, or Optional dual 19gallon/40 gallon fuel tanks. These tanksand tank combinations are carryover fromprior year Chassis Cab models.

Suspension• Staggered rear shock absorbers with F-250 and

F-350 SRW pickup models have enhancedmotion ratio for stability and smooth ride.

• A monobeam front suspension incorporatesnew left hand track bar brackets.

• Enhanced front and rear stabilizer bars for confident handling.

• Stiff two-piece intermediate steering shaftenhances precise steering control.

Cooling System• Significantly larger radiators are being used.

They come in four configurations; two forCummins and two for Caterpillar engines.

Electrical• The temporary battery box ground strap frame

attachment must not be relocated further rear-ward on the frame due to potential frame losses.

• A standard 130 Amp alternator replaces the 100Amp alternator which is no longer available.

Exhaust• Exhaust aftertreatment devices and locations.

• Bright vertical exhaust stack is no longer available.

• PTO installation on the LH side of the transmis-sion is permitted.

• PTO installation is not recommended on theright side of any transmission due to limitedclearance to the exhaust system.
