Why choose this course?You’ll be encouraged to undertake someprestigious work experience at each levelof the course to enable you to discernyour individual pathway in yourprofessional vocation. Throughout yourstudy there will be a number ofopportunities to work directly with a rangeof clients. This exchange of creative ideasand experience between you and peopleworking in the industry is a core feature ofthe programme.

What you’ll cover

About the courseYou'll build up a mix of technical andcreative abilities in photography, includingtraditional craft based skills and skills innew digital technologies. You'll also lookat how to apply what you've learned inthe workplace.

How you’ll learnThis course includes studio workshops,group and individual tutorials, seminarsand lectures. This is supported by aprogramme of visiting photographers andtrade suppliers.

The assessment of all your practicalmodules is by submission of practicalwork, formal presentation of course work,and contribution to individual tutorials,group tutorials and seminars. The contextand dissertation modules require you tosubmit essay work and course work.Practical work makes up 75% of thecourse, and critical studies 25%.

Your careerWorking closely with industry, this courseaims to give you the advantage you needwhen you're starting your career. Theacademic and practical skills you’lldevelop enable you to be flexible whenworking in a variety of different areas,from commercial, advertising and editorialphotography through to location findingand management, photo retail, imagemanipulation or being a photographer's agent or picture researcher.

You'll also be able to go on topostgraduate study, such as our MA Filmand Photography programme.

Additional informationEach year we organise an educationalfield visit to a cultural centre in Europe orthe USA and we visit trade shows andgalleries nationally. Day-long field visits toa variety of locations are also offered. At the end of the third year, you’ll have theopportunity to showcase yourachievements as well as making vitalindustry contacts at our graduate DegreeShow.

This creative festival is an ideal platformfor you to exhibit your work, and it’s areally high profile event in the city’s artscalendar.

We also provide support for graduatesstarting out in the creative industries,through our incubation unit - Banks Mill. It offers studio workspace and businessdevelopment activities, in a vibrant andthriving community of artists, designersand makers.
