ADIDAS SPRINTS TO CHEROKEE
Posted on August 11, 2016 in News.
German footwear giant adidas has chosen Cherokee County as the location for its first U.S.
production facility, a move that will bring 160 new jobs to the community.
The announcement was made by Gov. Nathan Deal on Wednesday, and Cherokee County
economic leaders expressed their excitement about the decision to build the almost $20 million
facility at Cherokee 75 Corporate Park along Highway 92.
“adidas is a company dedicated to innovation, quality, and sustainability, as is Cherokee County,”
said Marshall Day, chairman of the Board for the Cherokee Office of Economic Development. “We
appreciate the opportunity to work with our state and regional partners on this exciting venture.”
The more than 74,000-square-foot Atlanta factory will be up and running by the second half of 2017,
company officials said.
With a focus on running footwear at the high-tech facility, adidas is targeting production of 50,000
pairs in 2017, with an eventual annual production of about half a million pairs of shoes for running
and other uses, the company said.
Cherokee Office of Economic Development President Misti Martin confirmed Wednesday that the
company could expand beyond its original plans moving forward, which would eventually bring even
more jobs to the community.
The state of the art facility will allow adidas to create product more quickly and closer to U.S.
consumers, the company said of its decision to locate close to the metro Atlanta area.
Steve Holcomb, vice chair of the Cherokee Office of Economic Development, said the creation of
160 new jobs is vital to the Cherokee economy.
“It’s not just 160 jobs, it is 160 families or households positively impacted by this project. They can
improve their standard of living while working closer to home,” he said. “The multiplier effect of these
jobs will spread throughout the Atlanta region. In addition, having a highly recognized company here
gives Cherokee great visibility.”
The Cherokee County factory will complement adidas’ first SPEEDFACTORY in Germany. The U.S.
and Germany facilities are operated by adidas’ strategic partner Oechsler.
“For years our industry has been playing by the same rules manufacturing product remotely in Asia,”
said adidas Group Executive Board Member Eric Liedtke. “As the creator brand that challenges
convention and looks to co-create the future with our consumers, we are obsessed with bringing all

steps of the creation process home to America. We’re fueling design at the ground level of creativity
in Brooklyn and reinventing manufacturing with the first adidas SPEEDFACTORY in Atlanta. This
allows us to make product for the consumer, with the consumer, where the consumer lives in real
time, unleashing unparalleled creativity and endless opportunities for customization in America.”
Georgia offers industry leaders such as adidas the necessary resources to compete worldwide, Deal
said.
“Our state is emerging as a sports corridor for Southeastern U.S., and our business-friendly climate
will be a match for adidas’ new operation,” he said after the adidas announcement Wednesday. “We
look forward to working with our partners in Cherokee County and the Metro Atlanta Chamber to
support adidas in future growth.”
A major portion of Cherokee 75 Corporate Park lies within the “Opportunity Zone” which offers
businesses who locate there a maximum state job tax credit of $3,500 per job created. As a result,
COED has seen increased prospect activity and has been able to attract new industry along the I-75
and Highway 92 corridor.
“This is a primary example of how manufacturers can thrive in Georgia,” said Chris Carr, Georgia
Department of Economic Development commissioner. “The fact that Inalfa Roof Systems has
expanded twice since locating to Georgia a year ago means that our competitive business climate,
which includes a highly skilled workforce and strong logistics infrastructure, is the ideal place for
companies to remain successful.”
The expansion is a direct success of the COED’s goal to keep Cherokee County’s highly educated
population working and living in the same community.
“Almost half of the county’s adult population has earned an advanced degree,” COED President
Misti Martin said. “We must reduce the current out commute and create opportunities for our workers
here within Cherokee.”
