Did you know that there are laws regarding Service Animals in theplace of businesses?
On October 20, 2015, Governor Rick Snyder signed house Bill4313 that modernizes state law and protects those who utilize Psychi-atric Service Dogs. House Bill 4313 is a 4 bill package. Senate Bill298, which was sponsored by Senator David Knezek, makes it a crimeto refuse entry to a person using a service animal, or to assault or causeharm to a service animal.
The Chamber along with Wayne Ford Civic League, Stiggy Dogs,Last Day Dog Rescue, Westland Area Jaycees, CHAINED Inc, andseveral volunteer hosted a seminar about the new laws and require-ments on February, 27, 2016. There are now clearer guidelines for-business owners that you should know. What questions you can ask, what questions you cannot ask. As a result of that several businessowners walked away with valuable information. Thanks again to allthat help put this information together and made that event possible. If you are interested in learning about this please contact the
Chamber to receive your information packet and posters for yourbusiness.

We will be bring-ing back all the former mayors, open the time capsule that wasburied 50 years ago and pay tribute to how far we have come as acity. For the sixth year, I am asking Westland businesses to become apartner on a common goal of introducing Westland's young adultsto the workforce. The "Wild About Youth Works!" Program aimsto prepare Westland's young adults for the workforce by teachingthem the virtue of a strong work ethic, good customer service skillsand financial responsibility. This very successful program will kickoff on Wednesday, May 4th. Your business will benefit from par-ticipating in the program by attaining young, tech savvy employeeswho have had initial general training and education. All that is re-quired is a commitment to interviewing and hiring at least one stu-dent and providing them with at least 16 hours of work per weekfor six weeks or more at the minimum wage rate or higher. If youwould like to become a partner or would like more information, please call the Mayor’s Office at (734)467-3200.
I encourage you to stay connected with us and abreast of what isgoing on in Westland. Visit our website regularly and check out ourcalendar of events. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

What do 10 thousand pounds of carrots look like? Themarketing team at Zeal Credit Union knows. On a recentFriday afternoon, this team worked as volunteers at For-gotten Harvest in Oak Park, Mich., to repackage largecrates of fresh carrots into grocery bags. Forgotten Har-vest is a Detroit area non-profit that rescues surplus, pre-pared and perishable food that is distributed toemergency food providers to help feed the hungry.
“It was a fun team building project and made us feelgood to do charitable work for such a worthy organiza-tion,” said Lisa Fawcett, vice president of marketing forZeal Credit Union. “We got a kick out of the fact thatthey had us packaging carrots, and we were all dressedin our ‘Zeal orange’ logo wear for the occasion.”
Fawcett added that Forgotten Harvest receives a va-riety of perishable food like carrots, potatoes and otheritems and counts on volunteers to help repackage themfor distribution.
Founded in 1990 to fight hunger and waste, Forgot-ten Harvest services Wayne, Oakland and MacombCounties, and is currently the nation’s largest food res-cue organization.
Zeal Credit Union, www.zealcreditunion.org, is afull-service, non-profit financial institution with nearly60,000 members, assets exceeding $513 million and 11full-service branch offices in metro Detroit. Membersalso have access to more than 5,000 shared branches andnearly 30,000 ATMs nationwide. Men on the Move - Celebrating 25 Years!Westland Chamber of Commerce member Men on the Movehas come a long way since first opening in 1991 in Westland.Westland Chamber Board member Gary Bulson is co-owner ofthe company along with Gary Wrigley (who also owns NankinHardware). As Men on the Move continued to outgrow theirWestland space and expand their area of service, they lookedfor a new location closer to expressways and further north. InSeptember 2014 they moved to their current location in Livoniaon Merriman road but have continued to stay active in our busi-ness community.
Owner/manager Bulson explained, “We are a full servicemoving company meaning pretty much whatever you need donewe can do for you. We not only provide local moving servicebut long distance as well. As far as other service’s that some ofour customers look for like storage, packing, loading or unload-ing rental trucks, or just looking to buy boxes and packing sup-
plies we can help with all of that”. Their fleet now includesseven trucks and have 15 year round and up to 30 employeesduring their peak season.
What does he attribute their continued success to? “A lot ofmovers are what we call fly by night movers. They don’t havean office they answer calls though their cell phones, not insured, not licensed…..Men on the Move isn’t that type of company. We treat our employees like family and it shows most of ourstaff has been here over 15 years including the movers. We justdo good business and treat people right. That is how it is sup-posed to be and that is how we do it.”
