SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS

Ariana Portillo, PresidentAriana Portillo is the Senior Class President and is the Cadet Company Commander of the Marine Corps JROTC unit with the rank of Cadet Major. She is a member of National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, and Latino Student Association. She is an International Baccalaureate Diploma candidate and was a Prince William Country Youth Salute nominee. She played Girl’s JV Soccer at Gar-Field for two years. Ariana has been a member in the MCJROTC Colorguard, Honorguard, Drill Team, Air Rifle Team, and Raider Team. She is a Junior Volunteer at Sentara Hospital and has committed to George Mason University to major in Biology.

Fereshta Islamzada, SecretaryFereshta Islamzada is the Senior Class Secretary of Gar-Field High School, as well as a member of the National Honor Society, the Science National Honor Society, Key Club, and Model United Nations. She is an International Baccalaureate Diploma candidate. She has taken four years of Computer Science classes, relating to what she would like to study as a possible career path. Throughout her high school career, she played as captain of her basketball and track team, and participated in Varsity volleyball. Fereshta plans to continue her studies after high school at the University of Virginia with the intended major of Computer Science.

Arianna Martinez, Vice PresidentArianna Martinez is the senior class Vice President of Gar-Field High School, and the president of the Spanish National Honor Society. She has been involved in clubs such as National Honor Society and Marching Band. She is an International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme candidate. She took IB Business Management and Entrepreneurship in hopes to one day study corporate law. Arianna plans to continue her studies after high school at The College of William and Mary. She intends to major in Business Administration and Management.

STUDENT COUNCIL ASSOCIATION OFFICERS

Keyla I. Villatoro Cruz, PresidentKeyla I. Villatoro Cruz is the President of the Student Council Association. She is an International Baccalaureate Diploma candidate and a proud member of the MCJROTC program. She has been a part of the program for four years and has taken part in all the activities, ranging from Drill Team to Raiders Team. Keyla has been involved in the National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, A.K.E Club, and Key Club. She played for the JV softball team for two years and became the team captain in her junior year. This fall, Keyla plans to attend George Mason University to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Erick I. Arrivillaga-Barrios, Vice PresidentErick I. Arrivillaga-Barrios is the Vice President of the Student Council Association. Prior to obtaining the esteemed officer position, he was the secretary of Latino Student Association, Secretary of Science National Honor Society, co-captain of Powderpuff Cheer, and Girls Varsity Lacrosse manager during the 2019-2020 season. Additionally, as a member in various Gar-Field Senior High School organizations, Erick was able to edify his life by participating in Key Club, and A.K.E Club. He is an International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme candidate. In the following school year, Erick will attend George Mason University to major in Global Affairs with a minor in Criminology.

Jhuliza L. Guzman-Rivas, SecretaryJhuliza L. Guzman-Rivas is the Secretary of the Student Council Association. She is an International Baccalaureate Full Diploma Bilingual candidate. She has been heavily involved in the music program serving as Drum Major and Drumline Captain of the Marching Band and Viola Section Leader of the Advanced Orchestra Ensemble. She has also participated in clubs such as the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society. Jhuliza plans to continue her studies at George Mason University and pursue a major in Electrical Engineering.

Brandon Duncan, TreasurerBrandon E. Duncan is the treasurer of the Student Council Association. He is an International Baccalaureate Scholar candidate. He has been involved in the Student Council Association for three years and has accomplished several achievements doing so. Brandon was a member of the men’s Varsity Crew team for two years, and is now a member of the Color Guard team. In school, Brandon is a member of the Chemistry Club, National Honor Society, and Science National Honor Society. After high school, Brandon plans to continue his studies at Virginia Tech to major in Animal & Poultry Sciences with a minor in equine science on a pre-vet route.

Gar-Field High School is proud to present the 2021 class of International Baccalaureate Programme Diploma Candidates, Career-Related Programme Candidates, GFHS IB Scholars and DP Certificate Candidates. The IB Programme emphasizes international perspectives, the education of the whole person, an enriched curriculum, community service, and written and communication skills.

IB Diploma Candidates have successfully completed an advanced course of study including: English Literature, Experimental Sciences, Mathematics, Language Acquisition, and History with electives in Music, Visual Arts, Economics, Business, Computer Science, Human Geography, and Social & Global Politics. In addition, students have completed a 4000-word essay containing personal research, 150 hours of creativity, activity and community service, and advanced study in Theory of Knowledge, exploring ways of knowing across all six subject groups.

IB Diploma Candidates have successfully completed an advanced course of study including: English Literature, Language Acquisition, History, Experimental Sciences, and Mathematics, with electives in Music, Visual Arts, Economics, Business, Computer Science, Human Geography, and Global Politics. Additionally, students have completed a 4000-word essay containing personal research; have participated in advanced study in Theory of Knowledge, exploring ways of knowing across all six subject groups; and have undertaken a variety of creativity, activity, and service experiences in their school, local, and global communities.

The IB Career-related Progamme (IBCP) is a unique program combining the academic rigor of IB Diploma level courses while also allowing students to specialize in a career-related pathway. In addition to completing at least two Diploma Programme courses and a chosen career pathway, students have documented second language development; developed transferable workplace attitudes, skills and strategies in the Personal and Professional Skills course; completed a Reflective Project on an ethical dilemma related to their chosen career path; and documented service learning experiences.

Gar-Field Scholars have successfully completed four or more IB level courses and examinations. These students have also completed the Theory of Knowledge course and participated in creativity, activity, and service experiences.
